App of the Month: Splid (May 2025)
Good company makes for a good time, but it can also mean more work when it comes to calculating the bill. While some may find comfort in doing the math, others are often put off by the tedium of it all, especially with additional factors like multiple payees and uneven splits complicating matters. Taking the stress out of handling transactions is Splid, aptly conveyed through its tagline of 'Split bills, not friendships'. Designed to help users stay on top of their shared expenses and settle up in a fuss-free way, it touts a nifty slate of features, starting with a clean, straightforward interface that shows them who owes how much to whom after all the expenses are keyed in. There's no need for an Internet connection or account to reap the benefits, either. The app supports offline use and doesn't require sign-up to work, but going online will sync the group's spending. In more intricate cases where, say, not everyone orders the same serving or portion of food, the bill can be adjusted without being subjected to mental gymnastics. With over 150 currencies registered and the ability to automatically convert amounts into just one currency, Splid keeps up the convenience for travelling, allowing users to easily track their overseas spending and split costs while abroad. Those who want to download summaries as PDF or Excel files have to fork out a small sum of US$4.99, but otherwise, the app is available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store for free. Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Gaming Test — Wuthering Waves, Zenless Zone Zero, Genshin Impact & PUBG Mobile
All things considered, the Samsung Galaxy S25 series meets the mark for a slim profile. At 162 grams and 7.2 mm thick, the base model packs compact muscle for work and play, but its newest addition, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge, goes even leaner and meaner without skimping on performance. The device fits a Snapdragon Elite 8 processor and Adreno 830 GPU into its 5.8 mm-thin chassis, which accompanies a 6.7-inch QHD+ 120Hz display (3,200 x 1,800 pixels) for viewing enjoyment. It also inherits the same 200-megapixel camera from its Ultra sibling, alongside the full suite of Galaxy AI features, establishing itself as a competent all-rounder. Naturally, the horsepower extends to mobile gaming, and there's plenty to like about here. The lightweight form factor affords better grip and comfort in the hand, and it passed the gaming gauntlet of Wuthering Waves , Zenless Zone Zero , Genshin Impact , and PUBG: Mobile with flying colours. Frame rate drops were kept to a minimum, with surprisingly capable thermal management keeping overheating at bay even under heavy loads. Check out the performance of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge in the video above, spanning benchmarking indicators, starting and ending temperatures, and more. The S$1,628 base model features 12GB of RAM and 256GB of ROM, while the 512GB iteration retails for S$1,808. Max Returns As HBO Max (Again) After 2 Years Of Rebranding
Here's an official announcement that sounds like a joke but isn't: Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, is changing its name back to….wait for it, HBO Max. The rebranding will take place this summer, two years after Warner Bros. Discovery dropped 'HBO' from the title. The effort was even more short-lived in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, where it only launched last November with the Standard and Ultimate subscription tiers. More recently, its logo was also tweaked to the classic black-and-white HBO colour scheme, replacing the purple background from before. 'Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead,' David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a news release. Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, added: 'With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognised as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.' The company is no stranger to name changes, with its origins dating back to HBO Go, established as the original streaming service for HBO cable users in 2010. The release of HBO Now followed in 2015, allowing non-cable subscribers to stream content before both platforms were absorbed into HBO Max. To say that its history is confusing is probably an understatement for most. In any case, Max will revert to HBO Max sometime in Summer 2025 (and hopefully, can keep it for a longer time). 'Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition' On Nintendo Switch 2 Adds Two Classes & Bonus Content
The Lands Between will welcome new faces to the Nintendo Switch 2 when the console drops, with Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition introducing new classes, armour sets, and other bonus content. Per Famitsu, a special event held in Tokyo unveiled a first look at the upcoming selectable classes: Knight of Ides and Heavy Armoured Knight (as translated by RPG Site). Other details, including gameplay mechanics, were not shared, but developer FromSoftware confirmed the arrival of more new weapons and skills in the future. The two new classes will also reportedly unlock two of the four new armours in the Tarnished Edition , with the other two available to obtain in-game. Meanwhile, the ever-reliable Torrent is set for a makeover. Three new appearances are available for the spirit horse as part of the Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition , which includes the Shadow of the Erdtree content, and the Tarnished Pack DLC for other platforms. A release date has yet to be set for both the action-RPG on the Switch 2 and the Tarnished Pack DLC. The base title debuted in 2022 and has sold over 30 million copies to date, surpassing the entire Dark Souls series to become the studio's best-selling entry. While there are no plans for a direct sequel, its forthcoming spin-off, Elden Ring: Nightreign , will keep the fun (and a little bit of frustration) going with an additional co-op element when it releases on 30 May. Following that, genre fans can look forward to The Duskbloods , a surprise release for the Nintendo Switch 2. Not much else is known about the gothic-flavoured game, but it's coming sometime in 2026 as a console exclusive. Marvel's 'Thunderbolts*' Post-Credits Scene Directed By Russo Brothers
As Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) closes out with Thunderbolts* , now rebranded as The New Avengers , director Jake Schreier has shed light on an interesting tidbit of behind-the-scenes proceedings. Speaking to Variety, the filmmaker, whose portfolio includes Beef and Paper Towns , revealed that Joe and Anthony Russo, collectively known as the Russo Brothers, were in the director's seat for the movie's post-credits scene. 'That was shot maybe four weeks ago, and I did not direct that. That's the Russos on the set of Avengers: Doomsday . I got to be there, which was very fun, to watch your buddies go on to this grander scale,' he said. The news shouldn't be too surprising, considering that the post-credits scene serves as a setup for The Fantastic Four: First Steps , which is set to kick off Phase Six. Set 14 months after the ensemble film, it shows the eclectic team of misfits gathered inside their new headquarters (aka the Avengers Tower), with Bucky explaining that Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson, or Captain America, is suing them for using the Avengers name. Shortly after, the sound of an alarm cuts through the air, and a retro-styled spaceship bearing the iconic '4' logo comes into sight, heralding the arrival of The Fantastic Four. With the positive reception and box office success that Thunderbolts* is enjoying, it remains to be seen if the upcoming superhero flick can keep the momentum going. One thing's for certain, though: the New Avengers (and Bob, of course) will be back, and with a big role to play in saving the universe. Thunderbolts* assembles Florence Pugh ( We Live in Time ) as Yelena Belova, Sebastian Stan's ( The Apprentice ) Bucky Barnes, Wyatt Russell's ( Night Swim ) John Walker, David Harbour's ( Hellboy ) Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen's ( Black Mirror ) Ghost, Lewis Pullman's ( Lessons in Chemistry ) Sentry, with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep ) leading the orchestration. The big-screen pic is out now, while The Fantastic Four: First Steps opens in theatres on 25 July.
