Max Returns As HBO Max (Again) After 2 Years Of Rebranding

Geek Culture15-05-2025
Here's an official announcement that sounds like a joke but isn't: Max, the streaming service formerly known as HBO Max, is changing its name back to….wait for it, HBO Max. The rebranding will take place this summer, two years after Warner Bros. Discovery dropped 'HBO' from the title.
The effort was even more short-lived in Southeast Asia, including Singapore, where it only launched last November with the Standard and Ultimate subscription tiers. More recently, its logo was also tweaked to the classic black-and-white HBO colour scheme, replacing the purple background from before.
'Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead,' David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, said in a news release.
Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max content, added: 'With the course we are on and strong momentum we are enjoying, we believe HBO Max far better represents our current consumer proposition. And it clearly states our implicit promise to deliver content that is recognised as unique and, to steal a line we always said at HBO, worth paying for.'
The company is no stranger to name changes, with its origins dating back to HBO Go, established as the original streaming service for HBO cable users in 2010. The release of HBO Now followed in 2015, allowing non-cable subscribers to stream content before both platforms were absorbed into HBO Max. To say that its history is confusing is probably an understatement for most.
In any case, Max will revert to HBO Max sometime in Summer 2025 (and hopefully, can keep it for a longer time).

Warner Bros. Working On Another Live-Service Game Despite Suicide Squad Flop

Despite losing US$200 million after last year's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League , Warner Bros. Games has apparently not learnt its lesson and is hard at work on another new live-service title based in the DC Comics universe. This comes from a job listing for an executive producer role at WB Games Montréal, with the job scope including overseeing 'all phases of development, from concept to post-launch live operations', and the experience required including a 'deep understanding of the full game development lifecycle, including live services'. While the exact game title was not specified, the post did mention that it will be a 'high-quality AAA game based on one of the iconic IPs from the vast Warner Bros. and DC Comics catalogue.' It seems that despite its recent string of flops, from the aforementioned Suicide Squad , to the recently shut-down MultiVersus and 2022's disappointing Gotham Knights , WB Games has decided that the best course of action to regain the favour lost within its playbase is to double down on the very thing they hate, the dreaded live-service format. This also comes after a studio-wide shake-up late last year, where Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav discussed plans to only focus on four of its major gaming IPs: DC, Hogwarts Legacy , Mortal Kombat , and Game of Thrones , which makes this new live-service game likely to fall under the DC umbrella. This decision to once again stick to the live-service format becomes even more baffling when considering how tough of a time WB Games has it as of late, with Suicide Squad's flop leading to a 41 per cent drop in its gaming revenue last year and a four percent decrease across the studio's entire revenue, which comprises of gaming, TV and cinema. The studio has also seen layoffs and closures in the months that followed, including a team 'restructuring' at Rocksteady in September 2024, and the cancellation of its Wonder Woman game alongside the closure of three studios, Monolith Productions, Player First Games, and WB San Diego in February this year. Will WB Games' insistence on the live-service format somehow work in its favour, or is the studio committing career suicide? Only time will tell, but if history has taught us anything about the genre, it's likely the latter. 'The Last Of Us' Co-Creator Neil Druckmann Exits HBO Series, Leaving Craig Mazin As Sole Showrunner

Neil Druckmann, co-showrunner of the hit HBO series The Last of Us , has announced that he will be stepping away from the show ahead of its third season. Craig Mazin, who had served alongside Druckmann for the first two seasons, will now be the only showrunner moving forward. Photo credit: Frederic J. Brown / AFP via Getty Images Having co-created The Last of Us video game series, developed by the PlayStation video game studio Naughty Dog, Druckmann went on to co-create the HBO series with Mazin. Season 1 of The Last of Us launched in 2023 to great fanfare and success, while Season 2 dropped earlier this year. A third season was greenlit in April by HBO. Although he will remain as executive producer on the series, in a statement posted on Naughty Dog's official Instagram account, Druckmann disclosed that he would no longer be writing and directing the show moving forward. Druckmann cited a need to continue his responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative of Naughty Dog, as well as renewing his focus on their next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet . Meanwhile, Halley Gross, co-writer of 2020's The Last of Us Part II and writer and executive producer on Season 2 of the HBO series, has also announced that she would no longer be working on the show. She explained that her departure was 'to make space' for her upcoming future projects, but thanked Druckmann and Mazin for a wonderful time working on the show. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey ( The Last of Us ) With Druckmann and Gross both exiting the show, Mazin looks poised to be the last of the showrunners. However, what this means for the show moving forward is still up in the air. Season 2 departed from the games and adapted them more loosely, a move that was largely attributed to Mazin. While the larger fanbase criticised the lack of fidelity to the source material, some sources have also praised Mazin's move to explore tangential storylines and are looking forward to what his sole run will mean for the series ahead of Season 3. As Pedro Pascal's Joel Miller famously says in Season 1, 'You have no idea what loss is.' With no news yet on what Mazin plans for Season 3, fans will have to wait and see what the fresh loss of Druckmann means for the series, which ends after four seasons. 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Boldly Ends With Shortened Season 5

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to air, but the end is already in sight. In a surprising twist for one of the most successful and popular shows in recent years, Paramount+ confirmed that Season 5 will be its last outing, with production beginning later this year. Instead of the usual 10 episodes, which is set to continue into the fourth season, the concluding run will be reduced to six episodes. The news comes amid cost-cutting measures at Paramount Global, following an earlier announcement to reduce its U.S.-based headcount by 15 percent. On the flip side, it's worth noting that none of the newer Star Trek entries have gotten past five seasons, which may or may not be related to Captain Kirk's talk of a five-year mission from its earliest days. 'From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honour what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,' said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman in a joint statement. 'We're deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.' Taking place in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike led the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk took over, the prequel series debuted in 2022 and has since been nominated for multiple awards. The upcoming third season, premiering on 17 July in the U.S., stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, along with guest star Carol Kane, and special guest star Paul Wesley. It won't mark the end of Star Trek 's legacy, with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy next in line to launch into space. Hailing from showrunner Noga Landau, it stars Holly Hunter as a Starfleet captain who leads the Academy, and is expected to drop either this year or early 2026. As for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , both Season 4 and 5 remain undated. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get.
