'The Last Of Us' Co-Creator Neil Druckmann Exits HBO Series, Leaving Craig Mazin As Sole Showrunner
Having co-created The Last of Us video game series, developed by the PlayStation video game studio Naughty Dog, Druckmann went on to co-create the HBO series with Mazin. Season 1 of The Last of Us launched in 2023 to great fanfare and success, while Season 2 dropped earlier this year. A third season was greenlit in April by HBO.
Although he will remain as executive producer on the series, in a statement posted on Naughty Dog's official Instagram account, Druckmann disclosed that he would no longer be writing and directing the show moving forward. Druckmann cited a need to continue his responsibilities as Studio Head and Head of Creative of Naughty Dog, as well as renewing his focus on their next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet .
Meanwhile, Halley Gross, co-writer of 2020's The Last of Us Part II and writer and executive producer on Season 2 of the HBO series, has also announced that she would no longer be working on the show. She explained that her departure was 'to make space' for her upcoming future projects, but thanked Druckmann and Mazin for a wonderful time working on the show. With Druckmann and Gross both exiting the show, Mazin looks poised to be the last of the showrunners. However, what this means for the show moving forward is still up in the air. Season 2 departed from the games and adapted them more loosely, a move that was largely attributed to Mazin. While the larger fanbase criticised the lack of fidelity to the source material, some sources have also praised Mazin's move to explore tangential storylines and are looking forward to what his sole run will mean for the series ahead of Season 3.
As Pedro Pascal's Joel Miller famously says in Season 1, 'You have no idea what loss is.' With no news yet on what Mazin plans for Season 3, fans will have to wait and see what the fresh loss of Druckmann means for the series, which ends after four seasons.

'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' Revival Reveals New Lead Character Details
Hulu's Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot has officially unveiled the name of its new slayer: Nova. Earlier this year, Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum Sarah Michelle Gellar confirmed that Ryan Kiera Armstrong ( Star Wars: Skeleton Crew ) would step into the lead role for the reboot, with Gellar herself returning in a recurring capacity. At the time, Armstrong's character name was being kept under wraps, but Deadline now reports that she will portray Nova, a fitting choice given the name means 'new' in Latin. ‘Superman' Soars Past 'Man of Steel' US Box Office, Is First DC Film To Hit US$300 Million Domestically In Years
In another major victory for DC Studios, James Gunn's Superman has reached new heights of success after surpassing US$500 million at the global box office. The latest comic book adventure is now the first DC film to cross the domestic tally of US$300 million in three years, with The Batman grossing US$369.2 million at the end of its run. Notably, the milestone puts it ahead of Zack Snyder's Man of Steel , which accumulated US$291 million in 2013, not adjusted for inflation. It should be noted that the overtaking only applies to the domestic market, as the latter stands at US$670.1 million worldwide. The Henry Cavill-starring pic was also the last solo outing for the Last Son of Krypton, who returned to the big screen in the 2016 sequel Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice . If all goes well, Superman will soon overtake its domestic haul of US$330.4 million as well. Now in its fourth weekend, Junn's film joins Warner Bros.' A Minecraft Movie , Disney's live-action Lilo & Stitch , and Universal's Jurassic World Rebirth in the US$300 million club, becoming only the fourth title of 2025 to do so. Comic book enthusiasts are the real winners, either way. Superman has certainly borne fruit for DC Studios, living up to sky-high expectations as the launchpad to Chapter One of the rebooted cinematic universe. In it, David Corenswet ( Pearl ) takes on the role of the titular character, with Rachel Brosnahan ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ) portraying The Daily Planet journalist and Superman's love interest, Lois Lane. Meanwhile, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is directed by WandaVision 's Matt Shakman and serves as the 37th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It stars Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ) as Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby ( The Crown ) as Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, Ebon Moss-Bachrach ( The Bear ) as Ben Grimm / The Thing, and Joseph Quinn ( Stranger Things 4 ) as Johnny Storm / Human Torch, eschewing their origin stories for a new adventure in the retro-futuristic setting of an alternate universe known as Earth-828.
