Seminar at RIBF Highlights Promoting Intra-Islamic Dialogue
Mohamed Mandour As part of its cultural program at the 30th edition of the Rabat International Book Fair (RIBF), the Muslim Council of Elders hosted its second cultural seminar, titled 'The Problem of the Ummah's Division into Sunnis and Shiites.' The session was moderated by Dr. Mohamed Gamal, a researcher at the Heritage Revival Office of Al-Azhar, and featured a presentation by Dr. Elias Mohamed Belka, Professor at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez and Director of Strategic Studies at the Al Hokama Center for Peace Research. Opening the session, Dr. Mohamed Gamal emphasized that the Muslim Council of Elders, under the chairmanship of Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, is undertaking tireless efforts to mend the divisions within the Islamic nation. He highlighted the Grand Imam's 2022 call for intra-Islamic dialogue aimed at rejecting sectarian strife and conflict and reuniting the diverse schools of thought within Islam. These efforts culminated in the first edition of the Intra-Islamic Dialogue Conference, held in February this year in the Kingdom of Bahrain under the theme 'One Ummah… One Shared Destiny.' A major outcome of the conference was the Call of the People of the Qibla—a comprehensive charter for unity and reconciliation within the Ummah. Dr. Elias Mohamed Belka, Professor at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez and Director of Strategic Studies at the Al Hokama Center for Peace Research, commended the efforts of the Muslim Council of Elders, led by Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, in bridging the divide across the Islamic world. He noted that the Al Hokama Center has given significant attention to the issue of sectarian division, and recently published a book titled 'The Problem of the Ummah's Division into Sunnis and Shiites: Origins and Solutions.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Al Akhawayn University Launches ‘Ventures Adventure' to Boost Student Entrepreneurship
Rabat – Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane (AUI) has launched a new edition of its Entrepreneurship Month, called Ventures Adventure, which is running from April 7 to 26. Through Ventures Adventure, AUI aims to help students discover their talents, build confidence, and learn how to turn ideas into action, said the university in a press release. This year, the event is bigger and more inclusive. It is inviting students and teachers from three other Moroccan universities, including Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez, Moulay Ismaïl University in Meknes, and Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Ben Guerir. According to Nicolas Klotz, AUI's Executive Director of Entrepreneurship, opening Ventures Adventure to other universities marks an important step forward. 'It's a valuable opportunity to pool knowledge, energy, and ambition,' he stated. The event includes a startup competition with three rounds, open both online and in-person. Out of 100 startup ideas, 55 will move to the second round, and 20 finalists will compete in the final stage. Winners will receive prizes to help them launch and grow their projects. The statement noted that participants will receive support at every step from experienced coaches and mentors. In the first stage, five coaches are set to guide teams through quick idea development. In the next phase, 30 mentors from public and private organizations, including Attijariwafa Bank, the Digital Development Agency, and the Founder Institute, will help improve the projects. In the final round, 12 investors and business angels will review the best projects and choose the winners. The competition will end with the Angel Awards Ceremony on April 26, where top teams will receive investment, startup support, and personal mentoring opportunities. 'It's not just about creating startups, but about shaping a mindset,' said Amine Bensaid, AUI president. 'We want our students to feel empowered to explore multiple avenues, to take initiative, and to maintain this entrepreneurial energy regardless of the path they choose. That's what makes the AUI difference.' This year's edition includes other activities like fun workshops inspired by Babson College in the US to teach entrepreneurship in new ways, workshops for teachers to learn how to use games in their classrooms, and a practical session to build e-commerce websites using AI, without needing to code, among others. Students and teachers will also visit the International Agriculture Show (SIAM) in Meknes to meet experts in agritech, agribusiness, and social entrepreneurship, especially around water management. Sadik Rddad's New Book Rethinks Western Travel Writing on Morocco
Rabat – Sadik Rddad's latest book, Dis-orienting the Maghreb: Morocco in British and American Travel Writing , revisits Western narratives on Morocco with a fresh perspective. Moving over the well-worn themes of Orientalist discourse, Rddad examines how British and American travel writers constructed Morocco's image in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The book challenges dominant academic trends that focus on time and continuity, instead focusing on geography and historical context. Ali Behdad, a professor at UCLA, describes Rddad's work as a valuable addition to travel literature and postcolonial studies. 'His nuanced approach invites readers and scholars alike to reconsider the ways in which we engage with and interpret the rich tradition of travel writing,' Behdad notes. Rddad identifies four key shifts in the way Western writers portrayed Morocco. In Our Mission to the Court of Marocco (1880), Philip Durham Trotter presents a British diplomatic mission through a lens of national pride which reinforces and further validates a belief in British superiority. Frances Macnab's A Ride in Morocco (1902) moves away from religious and missionary perspectives, and instead promotes colonial secularism as the primary force of modernity. In Morocco the Piquant (1914), George Edmond Holt reflects broader cultural shifts in both Morocco and the US, placing the country within a growing transnational network. Finally, Edith Wharton's In Morocco (1920) tells the tensions between American nationalism and French colonial ambitions, while offering a glimpse into imperialist thought contradictions and imbalanced dichotomies. A professor of English and Cultural Studies at Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fez, Rddad has long engaged with questions of postcolonialism, Sufism, and cultural exchange. With his newly released book, he encourages a deeper reflection on how Western writers shaped, and at times distorted, understandings of Morocco, bringing much-needed attention to narratives often overlooked in academic discourse and deemed secondary.
