Chicken soup cups recalled due to undeclared wheat allergen
The Brief The USDA has issued a health alert for mislabeled Signature SELECT chicken soup that contains wheat not listed on the label. The soup was sold in Texas, Utah, and Washington, but is no longer on store shelves. Consumers with wheat allergies are urged to discard or return the product. LOS ANGELES - A ready-to-eat chicken soup product sold in three U.S. states is the subject of a public health alert after officials discovered it was mislabeled and contains an undeclared wheat allergen, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The soup, labeled as "Signature SELECT Creamy Chicken & Wild Rice Soup," was found to have packaging that incorrectly identified it as "Chicken Corn Chowder" on the side label, causing a wheat ingredient to be left off the visible allergen list. The affected soup cups were produced on April 10, 2025, and distributed to retail and distributor locations in Texas, Utah, and Washington. The soup came in 24-ounce plastic containers with a "BEST BY June 24 25" date and lot code "8225 5100" on the bottom. Each container bears establishment number "P-46381" inside the USDA inspection mark. The backstory The issue was first spotted by a store employee who noticed that the top and side labels of the soup didn't match. The employee reported the mismatch to the company, which then alerted the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). FSIS issued a public health alert on May 22. Officials say a recall was not requested because the soup is no longer available in stores. However, the agency is warning consumers who may have stored the product at home not to eat it. What they're saying There have been no confirmed reports of illness connected to the mislabeled soup, according to FSIS. However, people with wheat allergies or sensitivities are advised to throw the product away or return it to the place of purchase.
