With the group already won, the 20-year-old replaced Guro Reiten on the left side of the attack and seized the opportunity, scoring twice and teeing up Frida Maanum for two more goals leading to calls from fans for Gaupsetto start. "With Signe, the Iceland performance, that wasn't so much of a surprise to any of us. We see Signe training every day and that's how she is," Grainger told reporters, remaining tight-lipped about her plans. "With the rest of the team, the competitiveness has been really high and for me as a manager that's exactly the position that I want to be in, and it's a position that I want the team to be in also." The Norwegians have appeared to be in high spirits at their training base on the shore of Lake Neuchatel, with the players laughing and joking and signing autographs for fans. However, captain Ada Hegerberg, who recently spoke to Reuters about her will to inspire at the tournament, said that the chance of a spot in the last four is a huge opportunity for her side. "It's an incredibly big moment for us. We have had a very good energy, the whole team. Everyone has contributed," Hegerberg, who played in Norway's 2013 final defeat by Germany, told reporters. "We want to have a good match tomorrow, we want to grab the opportunity to be in the top four in Europe, that would be incredible," she added. Norway beat Iceland in seven-goal thriller to extend perfect record
Signe Gaupset and Frida Maanum both scored twice as Norway survived a late Iceland fightback to extend their 100% winning start at Euro 2025. SK Brann's 20-year-old forward Gaupset, one of six changes made by coach Gemma Grainger, assisted both of Maanum's goals after scoring a double of her own. Advertisement There was nothing at stake at Stockhorn Arena, with Norway having already qualified for the quarter-finals as group winners while Iceland had already been eliminated from the tournament after defeats in their opening two games. Iceland were on top when they took the lead and scored their first goal of the tournament through Sveindis Jonsdottir, who reacted quickest to a loose ball from a corner and fired past Cecilie Fiskerstrand from close range. Their lead lasted just nine minutes as Norway grew into the game and scored from a set-piece of their own, this time Gaupset volleying in from Vilde Boe Risa's corner. Gaupset scored her second 11 minutes later after collecting the ball on the turn before running at goal and unleashing a fierce strike into the bottom corner. Advertisement She then turned provider for Maanum after the break, playing a one-two with the Arsenal forward, who clinically finished from inside the box. The pair linked up again as Maanum made a driving run forward from Gaupset's ball and scored Norway's fourth from the edge of the box with 14 minutes left. Iceland gave Norway a nervy end to the game with two late goals. Substitute Hlin Eiriksdottir scored in the 84th minute before Glodis Viggosdottir converted a penalty awarded by the video assistant referee in injury time after Marit Lund's shirt pull on Eiriksdottir, for which the Norway defender received a second yellow card. Advertisement Despite a spirited end to the game, Iceland could not find a way back to register their first point in Switzerland. What was the main talking point? With a place in the last eight already secured, it was a question of whether Norway boss Grainger would stick or twist with her starting XI. Would she help the regulars to build momentum heading into the knockouts, or give other players a chance? Throughout the tournament the Englishwoman has spoken about the "importance of every player" in her squad and she made six changes, resting captain Ada Hegerburg, plus Guro Reiten, Caroline Graham Hansen, Ingrid Engen, Thea Bjelde and Lund. Advertisement It was a slow start from the two-time champions as they found themselves behind, but the new-look line-up showed fight and hunger and dominated across the pitch. It was far from a perfect performance though, with a number of misplaced passes, wasted chances and they once again faded away towards the end of the game with two goals conceded after the 84th minute. Their defensive frailties must be addressed, but among the positives to take was the fact that Lund was the only rested player that Grainger turned to from the bench. Having already met Iceland twice in 2025 with two draws against them in the Nations League, it was third time lucky for Norway who now go into the quarter-finals full of confidence. Advertisement Which player stood out? Making only her 11th senior appearance for Norway, Gaupset was handed her first start of the tournament and repaid the faith shown by Grainger with a statement performance. She played with a smile on her face and had the confidence and the freedom to dominate Iceland's defence and was undoubtedly Norway's bright spark. Her finishes before the break were world-class, a first-time volley hit from a corner before a long-range strike to add to her tally. Aged 20 years and 22 days, she became the youngest player to score twice in a Women's Euros match, beating Vivianne Miedema, who was 21 years and 22 days when she scored twice for the Netherlands in the 2017 final. Advertisement With two first-half goals and two assists after the break, Gaupset is the second player after Alexia Putellas to register two goals and two assists at Euro 2025. She is now Norway's top goalscorer in Switzerland and has given Grainger something to think about going into the quarter-finals. The standout stats Gaupset and Maanum's doubles in this match were the first time a Norwegian player has netted multiple goals in a Women's Euros match since Solveig Gulbrandsen vs Sweden in June 2005. Norway have won all three group stage games at a Women's Euros for the first time. It is the first time since the 1999 Women's World Cup they have won all group games at a major tournament. Advertisement Iceland became the first nation in the history of the competition to lose all three group stage games at three different editions of the tournament. What is next? Norway will play their quarter-final on 16 July in Geneva at 20:00 BST. They will play either Spain, Italy or Portugal from Group B, which concludes on 11 July (20:00 BST). With both teams level on points, Spain are currently top of the group and would stay there if they avoid defeat. Norway will play whoever finishes second in the group. Iceland return to action in October when they play Northern Ireland in the Nations League.

Signe Gaupset Threatening To Be Breakout Star Of UEFA Women's Euro

(Photo by Nick Potts/PA Images via Getty Images) At 20 years of age, Signe Gauspet made UEFA Women's Euro history last week and hopes to propel Norway into their first major tournament semi-final tomorrow. The buccaneering forward started her first game against Iceland last Thursday and demonstrated her prodigious talents by scoring twice and providing two assists in Norway's 4-3 win. It was the first time that the former World, European and Olympic champions had manged to win all three of their group games at a UEFA Women's Euro tournament. The last of their international triumphs came in 2000, five years before Gaupset was born. Possessing a stellar forward line consisting of leading players from Arsenal, Barcelona, Chelsea and OL Lyonnes, living up to those past achievements has become a burden for the current generation of Norwegians. They had humiliatingly been eliminated from the group stage of the last two editions of the UEFA Women's Euro in 2017 and 2022. Despite failing to catch the eye during their opening two matches in Switzerland, Norway won both and secured top spot in Group A with a game to spare. This meant they could rest their first-choice attackers and Gaupset, who had already impressed with her direct running style in the second half against Finland, was given a rare opportunity to start. She grabbed her chance, becoming the youngest-ever player in the competition's history to score twice in a game. She scored and assisted with both right and left foot earning herself the Visa Player of the Match award for her performance. (Photo by Alex Caparros - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) The UEFA Technical Observer Panel said "with two goals and two assists, she was influential in the match when it was in the balance. She was also high up in terms of key passes, penalty-box entries and among the leaders in ball carries, showing her influence on the game." Speaking to SheKicks magazine after the game, Gaupset admitted 'that's really good for me. Great moments to be with such good players that play in better leagues than I do. It's a good experience for me. They also help me a lot on the pitch today so, yeah, I'm really happy.' Gaupset had already come to international prominence as an 18-year-old with her performances for SK Brann in the UEFA Women's Champions League. Her ability to rise to the biggest occasion demonstrated by her last-minute equaliser against Olympique Lyonnais (now OL Lyonnes) in Bergen. (Photo by Alex Pantling - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) From the age of 10, Gaupset played the game obsessively before and after school. She also recorded everything she learned in a set of meticulous training diaries aimed at perfecting her trade which she still maintains as a professional. Her assistant coach at SK Brann Knut Slatleim once described Gaupset as possessing "a determination that is not quite normal." Like her national team captain, Ada Hegerberg, Gaupset hails from the Molde municipality. One of her most treasured possessions is a pair of Hegerberg's boots. Gaupset signed for IL Sandviken (now SK Brann) before her 16th birthday. Aged 17 she was a matchwinner in the Norwegian Cup final, scoring twice against Stabæk at the national Ullevaal stadium in Oslo. Englishman Martin Ho worked with Gaupset for two seasons. The new Tottenham Hotspur head coach told me 'as a player for the national team, you've seen the impact she's had. In the game against Iceland she scored two goals and two assists, which showed the level of her quality. When she got the opportunity, she performed at a really high level.' Norwegian head coach Gemma Grainger now has the dilemma of trying to find a place for her against Italy tomorrow in a forward line where Caroline Graham Hansen, Frida Maanum and Guro Reiten are established starters. Nonetheless, Grainger was delighted with Gaupset's performance against Iceland. "She takes her opportunities. Tonight it's so nice to see her step onto the pitch and express herself. I see her do that every week for her club; I've seen her do it in the Women's Champions League, and now I've seen her do it here." THUN, SWITZERLAND - JULY 10: Gemma Grainger, Head Coach of Norway, speaks to the media in a post ... (Photo by Chris Ricco - UEFA/UEFA via Getty Images) Ho believes the best is yet to come from Gaupset. "I think that's what Signe needs sometimes is the opportunity to go and perform at national level and show what she's capable of. When she got the chance the other day, she took it with both hands. She's a wonderful talent, as everyone can see. She's high quality on the pitch, and plays with no fear, lots of courage, she's very brave. More importantly, she has a difference to her game that not a lot of people have, that maverick approach where she can pop up and do something in an instant, even when she's not in the game." Gaupset is one of only five members of the Norwegian squad who play in their domestic league. Her performances in Switzerland will no doubt alert the leading clubs in Europe to her talents. Ho said "the national team have a wonderful player on their hands. Hopefully she gets an opportunity to play in the quarter final, and she can go and show everyone more of what she's about.'
