Single university entrance exam requires careful study, says Education Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The implementation of a single uniform examination for all pre-university pathways, including STPM, Matriculation, and Foundation programmes, requires careful consideration. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said various education pathways such as STPM, STAM, Foundation Programmes, and Matriculation Programmes have been established to provide wider choices for SPM leavers according to their interests and potential. "The implementation of the admission system to public universities is an important aspect in assessing students' potential comprehensively, taking into account the balance between academic excellence and holistic development. "Each of these pathways has its study structure and curriculum to meet the diverse needs of students. "Therefore, the assessment approaches used are also different, in line with the objectives and direction of the respective programmes," she said in a written reply to Lim Guan Eng (PH-Bagan). Lim had asked Fadhlina whether a single common examination could be implemented for all students of STPM, Matriculation, and Foundation programmes applying for places at public universities, instead of the current practice of three different examinations, to establish a consistent and accurate basis for comparing performance aligned with excellence standards. Fadhlina said the proposal to implement a single uniform examination for all these pathways indeed has the potential to streamline the admission system to public universities. "Any changes must go through in-depth studies and comprehensive evaluations to ensure alignment with the Education Ministry's commitment to provide fair and quality educational access to all students, regardless of their background," she said. On Nov 11, last year, it was reported that the Education Ministry was reviewing a proposal to introduce a unified entrance examination for matriculation and Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) graduates seeking admission to public universities. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh had said that the move reflected the ministry's commitment to providing students with a clear and streamlined pathway to pursue higher education at public institutions. However, he said that no final decision had yet been made on the proposal.

STPM top scorers from Kelantan spent seven days a week in school

KUALA LUMPUR: Three friends from SMK Tengku Panglima Raja in Pasir Mas, Kelantan, were among the eight top scorers in the nation for last year's Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM). The students, Nur Amalina Osman, Nurnajwa Syafina Mohd Redzuan and Muhammad Irham Mazlan worked hard to achieve 5As and a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0 in the social sciences stream. "We go to school seven days a week; on Fridays and Saturdays, it's on our own initiative. "On weekdays, officially our classes end at 2pm but we continue to stay back and study together. Sometimes, there are those who go home at 7pm," said Nurnajwa. She added that it was not compulsory to stay back after classes had ended, but rather it was their choice to do so and revise together. Nur Amalina said that she also avoided studying at the very last minute. "I don't like studying at the last minute. If possible, a month before the exam I would finish the syllabus," she said at an award ceremony for the top STPM scorers. Their proud headmaster, Ahmad Azli Abdullah, was also present at the award ceremony. He said that 11 students in the school obtained a CGPA of 4.0, out of a total of 104 STPM candidates. However, he said nurturing excellent students was not unusual for SMK Tengku Panglima Raja as many students before had achieved national recognition for their exam results. "Last year, we didn't get (any awards). But this year, we rise again. "One important thing is that we have taubat, hajat and dhuha prayers every morning. We start classes a little bit late," he said. Azli said the school regularly holds motivational talks for students, particularly in the lead-up to examinations. A total of 1,266 candidates nationwide obtained a perfect cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0 in STPM last year.

Man grieves fiancé-to-be killed in Felda Ulu Tebrau crash

JOHOR BARU: One of the two siblings killed in a collision in Felda Ulu Tebrau on Sunday night had planned to get engaged later this year. Nuraisyah Amalin Zaibur, 20, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle driven by her younger brother, Ammar Saifullah, 15, died when they collided with a Toyota Estima multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) at the traffic light junction of Simpang Empat Felda Ulu Tebrau. Nuraisyah's fiancé-to-be, Mohd Dzulfitri A Halim, 21, said they had been planning to get engaged after knowing each other for seven years. "I've known Nuraisyah since our school days. I was in Form Three and she was in Form Two at the time. We had planned to get engaged at the end of this year, but it was not meant to be. "We'd been together for seven years. I knew her family and she knew mine. I had spoken with my family about proposing to her. "But my mum advised me to finish paying off my motorcycle instalments first before getting engaged. The bike would be fully paid off this month, so we planned to get engaged at the end of the year. Both families had agreed — but now she's gone. I accept it as fate," he said. The late Nuraisyah was the eldest of four siblings and had been awaiting her Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia (STPM) results. Mohd Dzulfitri said that while waiting for her results, Nuraisyah had been working as a factory operator in Desa Cemerlang. "She had only just started working two weeks ago. The last time I saw her was the day before the accident. "We spent some time together, going out for a meal on the weekend when we were both off work. "After returning home the next day, Nuraisyah messaged me to say she would be celebrating Hari Raya at her father's house in Ulu Tiram. "At the time, I thought she would be travelling by car. I had no idea she went by motorbike with her younger brother. I only found out about the accident when a friend told me," he said, adding that Nuraisyah had hoped to pursue her studies to become a teacher, a dream that will now remain unfulfilled. The siblings' remains were laid to rest at the Felda Ulu Tebrau Muslim cemetery at 1.20pm today.
