Restaurant shares 'bitter disappointment' after more than 20 complaints from local residents
The former Holm House in Penarth, a luxury boutique hotel on the seafront has reopened with a new restaurant from the team behind popular Cardiff venue, Silures. It opened its doors to guests for the first time on Friday, July 11, but just two weeks later they have faced more than 20 complaints raised by local residents. The complaints have meant that Silures Penarth can no longer serve alcoholic drinks on the premises, and will have to wait longer for their alcohol licence to come through due to significant delays. The hotel originally closed in March 2024 due to rising costs and changing market conditions post-pandemic. "There'll be exceptions made on August 2nd and 10th, which we'll be utilising temporary licensing (also known as 'TEN' - Temporary Events Notice) for to honour existing event bookings. "Up to now, our focus alongside the bedroom management team has been to open Silures at Holm House in the best possible way, as early as possible. By doing so, we've needed to apply for temporary licensing whilst our permanent application went through the standard process. "Due to complaints raised, our application has been significantly delayed and we have unfortunately exhausted the maximum number of 'TEN' days available." They continued: "With this update, we are now inviting diners during this period to bring their own alcohol free of charge (without corkage). All guests booked during this period will be notified. We sadly can only accommodate diners and those ordering soft or hot drinks in the bar, garden and lounge areas."We'd like to thank all guests who have dined with us up to now, and those planning to in the near future- Daf & Andrei" Social media users have flooded the comments of the post to share their support. Some people have asked how they can help and others have wished the team a speedy resolution. One user said: "Oh no! Sorry to hear that. It'll be a temporary blip and you'll be up and running before long again." Another added: "Absolutely crazy to see a local business have to jump through hoops of some people that have absolutely nothing better to do - especially given that the previous business terms were just this! "Not only do you support the local community through jobs, a place to go, local produce and adding a sense of community back to Penarth - we should be supporting businesses that want to take a chance in these climates not holding them accountable to some minor red tape. For this reason - (and I have had a wonderful dinner with you already) I will be booking again during this period. Hoping you move past this swiftly." A spokesperson for the Vale of Glamorgan Council have said that the license is still being determined and the next committee meeting when the decision is due to be made on August 12.

They've all stayed in the former Holm House in Penarth, a luxury boutique hotel on the seafront that's now reopening as a restaurant from the team behind popular Cardiff venue, Silures. Situated on Marine Parade and offering extensive views of the Bristol Channel, the hotel - which closed in March 2024 due to rising costs and changing market conditions post-pandemic - has since been revamped, refurbished. With modernised self check-in rooms which look over the ocean and a brand new restaurant which serves European cuisine and has an extensive drinks menu. The initiative comes from Cardiff-based A&M Hospitality Group, established by Andrei Maxim and Daf Andrews, who've worked in London restaurants like the Savoy Grill, Galvin Bar & Grill and The Coral Room. The new location will feature a 50-seater main dining area, a bar for 25 people and a private dining room catering to 22. The private dining space and outdoor areas give us more flexibility to host everything from intimate dinners to events and celebrations, while staying true to the Silures experience." Acknowledged as a "country treasure" within Penarth's conservation area appraisal, Holm House was first built as a private dwelling in the 1920s, the Holm House was turned into a boutique hotel in 2004. The restaurant's filled with green and gold accents that are complimented by the foliage additions. Located on Marine Parade, with sweeping views over the Bristol Channel, Holm House will become the second venue for Silures - recently named Cardiff's most booked restaurant of 2024, by The Fork. This venture is being launched by Cardiff company A&M Hospitality Group, which was founded by Andrei Maxim and Daf Andrews. Their backgrounds include leading roles at some of London's most prestigious venues including the Savoy Grill, Galvin Bar & Grill and The Coral Room. They have a popular restaurant in Roath, Cardiff, and they say this new venture will bring its signature blend of European cooking, cocktails and warm hospitality to the scenic coastal town. The building is cherished locally and has been listed as a "country treasure" in Penarth's conservation area appraisal. Explaining why they have decided to open a new restaurant there, Daf Andrews said: "Penarth felt like the natural next step - a vibrant town with a strong sense of community and an appetite for quality hospitality. "Holm House is a beautiful building, and the rooms, spa and garden offer something truly special. The private dining space and outdoor areas give us more flexibility to host everything from intimate dinners to events and celebrations, while staying true to the Silures experience." The Penarth site will include a 50-seat main restaurant, a bar area with space for 25, a private dining room for 22 and garden terrace that can seat up to 50 or host up to 100 standing guests. Silures is known for it's eclectic European menu (Image: A&M Hospitality Group ) They say the menu is set to boast popular dishes such as XL jumbo king prawns with chilli and mango salsa, miso-glazed cauliflower with romesco and pistachio, a specialised wagyu burger and their Baked Alaska with white rum - prepared tableside. There will be weekly specials with a weekday set menu, which is served Wednesday to Saturday, 12 to 3pm and 5pm to 6pm.
