Here's what's open and closed in Toronto this Civic Holiday

This Civic Holiday long weekend people can expect a mix of closures, modified hours and plenty of open attractions as Toronto and the GTA gear up for the August long weekend. Celebrated on the first Monday of August, the Civic Holiday — sometimes referred to as Simcoe Day in Toronto — offers a midsummer break for many, though it's not a statutory holiday in Ontario. That means provincially regulated employers aren't legally required to give this day off, and some businesses may stay open or operate on reduced hours.

Is the August Civic Holiday a stat — and who gets the day off work with pay?

The upcoming Civic Holiday in Canada is on Monday, Aug. 4, which makes for a much-anticipated long weekend for most. The Civic Holiday — often simply referred to as the 'Civic,' the Civic long weekend, or the August long weekend — varies by name and celebration across provinces and municipalities. In Toronto, it's known as 'Simcoe Day,' named in honour of John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada and founder of York, now Toronto. On Aug. 4, many government offices will be closed, as will schools, post offices, banks and libraries in most areas. Public transit typically runs on a reduced holiday schedule. The Civic Holiday is listed by the federal government as a public holiday (excluding Quebec). The province of Ontario , however, does not consider it to be a mandatory public holiday. Paid public holidays, also known as statutory holidays or general holidays, are days throughout the year when most businesses are legislated to close, but must still pay eligible employees as though it was a regular work day. Despite the Civic Holiday not being an official public holiday in Ontario, many workers will still get the day off work. Ontario has nine designated public holidays. What are the mandatory statutory paid holidays in Ontario? On a statutory holiday, your employer is legally required to give you the day off, or pay you more for working on the holiday. Error!
