Simeon Rice To Receive Buccaneers Highest Honor

One of the most prolific pass rushers in Tampa Bay Buccaneers history will now receive the team's highest honor. The Buccaneers officially announced that Super Bowl champion and two-time Pro Bowler Simeon Rice will be the franchise's 16th inductee into the team's Ring of Honor in the upcoming season. Advertisement "During his Hall of Fame-worthy 12-year career, Simeon Rice established himself as one of the most dominant pass rushers in NFL history and is immensely deserving of his place as the 16th member in the Buccaneers Ring of Honor," said Buccaneers owner/co-chairman Bryan Glazer, via the team's website. "Simeon arrived in Tampa prior to the 2001 season and immediately elevated our defense into one of the greatest of all time. He left an indelible mark on our franchise, and we look forward to honoring and celebrating his great career this upcoming season." Rice was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals No. 3 overall in the 1996 NFL Draft and spent five seasons in the desert before signing with the Bucs prior to the 2001 season. So it's only appropriate that the Buccaneers hold the induction ceremony during halftime of Tampa Bay's Week 13 matchup with the Cards at Raymond James Stadium. Rice joined a Bucs team in 2001 that made the postseason in 2000, carried by the defense. In his first season in Tampa Bay, he posted 64 tackles and 11 sacks as the Bucs fell to the Philadelphia Eagles in the postseason in 2001. After the loss, coach Tony Dungy was fired and the team was overhauled under new coach Jon Gruden. Rice helped the team to a 48-21 Super Bowl championship over Gruden's old team, the then-Oakland Raiders and tallied five tackles and two sacks in the title game. Advertisement Rice made the Pro Bowl twice with the Cardinals and twice with the Buccaneers and was also named First-Team All-Pro in 2002 and Second-Team All-Pro in 2003. The Illinois product finished his career in 2007 with the Broncos after posting 483 tackles with 403 solo and 93 for loss over 12 seasons. He added 122 sacks, five interceptions, 28 forced fumbles and eight fumble recoveries. Bucs owner Bryan Glazer lobbying for Simeon Rice to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame

Simeon Rice has been announced as the next member of the Buccaneers' Ring of Honor, but Buccaneers co-owner Bryan Glazer is lobbying for Rice to get an even greater recognition. Glazer called Rice "the missing piece to make our defense one of the greatest of all time" and said that the Pro Football Hall of Fame's selectors have committed an oversight by not putting Rice in Canton. Advertisement "From 1996 to 2005, he totaled a league-best 101.5 sacks over those eight years, more than Hall of Famers Michael Strahan and Jason Taylor," Glazer said. "During that same stretch, his mark of eight seasons with double-digit sack totals is the seventh most in NFL history, and all six men ahead of him on that list are members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Simeon's credentials for induction into our Ring of Honor are unquestioned, but he's equally qualified and deserving of an overdue call from the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Notably, he's the only retired player with 100 sacks over eight consecutive seasons who doesn't own a Gold Jacket. It's time to rectify that oversight." Rice said getting into the Pro Football Hall of Fame while his parents were still alive would have meant a lot to him because of how much it would have meant to them, but that after his parents died he thought less about it. "That's all that meant anything to me," Rice said. "The only thing that mattered to me was playing football. I loved this game, and it's how I celebrated my mother and father. And they're not with me. . . . I'm just thinking about my mother and father." The Cardinals drafted Rice out of Illinois with the third overall pick in 1996. After five seasons in Arizona, Rice signed with the Buccaneers in free agency in 2001 and spent six seasons with the Bucs. He then played briefly with the Broncos and Colts before retiring.

The Arizona Cardinals' Week 13 matchup on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just had some intrigue added to the game. The Bucs announced on Monday that Simeon Rice would be inducted into Tampa Bay's Ring of Honor at halftime of their game against the Cardinals on November 30. He will be the Bucs' 16th member. Why is this significant? Rice, who had 122 career sacks and played for the Buccaneers from 2001-2006, was originally drafted by the Cardinals. He was the third overall pick in the 1996 NFL draft and played for Arizona for five seasons. Rice had 53.5 sacks for the Cardinals, the fourth-highest career total in franchise history. After retiring from football, he took an unexpected path filmmaking . It was a bold move for someone who had spent most of his life defined by physical dominance. Yet, Rice embraced the challenge, attending film school and later writing and directing his own projects. The leap from the field to the director's chair was far from easy, and Rice himself acknowledges that. 'In football, what you see is what you get. It's a dog-eat-dog business, but the best will survive,' Rice said. 'You can't prepare for something like making a film. You can make the best film in the world, but that doesn't mean people are going to see it.' These words reflect the humility and realism Rice brings to his second career. While he once measured success in tackles and championships, he now views it through the lens of storytelling, creativity, and persistence. His induction into the Ring of Honor is a celebration not only of his football achievements but also of his remarkable journey of reinvention. It's a testament to his fearlessness both on and off the field and a reminder that greatness can take many forms.
