BREAKING: Simien elected next mayor of Lake Charles

Marshall Simien Jr. Lake Charles has chosen a new mayor. Former City Council member Marshall Simien Jr., an independent, unseated Nic Hunter, a Republican, Saturday during a run-off race needed after neither candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in March's election. Simien received 52 percent of the vote, or 7,703, during Saturday's election. Hunter received 48 percent, or 7,049 votes, according to complete but unofficial results from the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office. Simien will be the city's 30th mayor — and is the first Black person ever elected to lead Lake Charles. Rodney Geyen served as interim mayor for a four-month period at the end of 1999 and into 2000 after Willie Mount was elected to the state Senate. 'Marshall is a good man and Lake Charles will be just fine moving forward,' Hunter said in a Facebook posting conceding the race. 'I committed to him that it will be as seamless a transition as possible. My family and I are doing well and ready for the next chapter God has in store for us. I thank all my friends, family, and supporters. It's been a great ride and we've accomplished a lot.'

Sacramento County "Clover Leaf Rapist" handed 82 years to life in prison sentence

SACRAMENTO – A man whose string of crimes led him to be known as the "Clover Leaf Rapist" will now spend 82 years to life in prison. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office says a judge handed down a sentence to JD Simien back on Feb. 21. Last October, Simien was convicted by jury trial of a series of rapes in 2013 and 2014 in Sacramento County. Investigators linked Simien to several sexual assaults in the northern part of Sacramento County. The name "Clover Leaf Rapist" stemmed from the crimes happening near freeway entrances and exits, forming a shape on the map resembling a clover leaf. Using the same DNA technology, known as genetic genealogy, that helped track down the Golden State Killer, prosecutors linked Simien to the Clover Leaf case. Simien was arrested by detectives in 2021. The crimes Simien was convicted of include two counts of kidnapping to commit another crime, two counts of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation, sexual battery by restraint, and assault with intent to commit rape.

In addition to sexually assaulting and raping his victims, Simien sometimes took his victims' wallet and threatened to kill them if they reported the attack, the DA's office said. He also strangled all three women and stabbed one of his victims in the neck. According to the DA's office, DNA recovered from the victims' clothes and the use of rape kits lead investigators to Simien. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Spirit Awards: Justin Simien Shares Plan for 'Stopping the White Nationalist Coup Taking Over This Country'

Continuing the recent trend of awards shows becoming political again amid Donald Trump's second term, the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards featured a number of political comments from winners on Saturday. Arguably the most pointed remarks aimed at the current administration, which, among other things, has tried to roll back federal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, came from writer-director Justin Simien. More from The Hollywood Reporter Most Memorable Spirit Awards Moments, From 'Anora' Winning Big to Natasha Rothwell's Emotional Speech Sean Baker Reflects on Current State of Indie Films at Spirit Awards: "The System Has to Change, Because This Is Simply Unsustainable" Spirit Awards: Kieran Culkin Wins for 'A Real Pain' as He Misses Another Awards Show Seemingly surprised to have won for his nonscripted series Hollywood Black, Simien used his time onstage to address what he sees as a 'white nationalist coup taking over this country.' And he suggested that Hollywood Black, an MGM+ docuseries that chronicles Black people's experience in the entertainment industry, might be part of how to fight back. 'If you're serious about stopping the white nationalist coup taking over this country, how about amplifying Black history,' he said. 'Because Black people, we've been in a fascist country this whole time. Maybe start with Hollywood Black.' Simien previously won the best first screenplay Spirit Award for his 2014 feature Dear White People, which was also nominated for best first feature. Earlier in the show, How to Die Alone creator and star Natasha Rothwell, accepting for best ensemble in a new scripted series, expressed her support for the 'trans community under attack right now,' in the wake of Trump's anti-trans executive orders. 'Know that you are not alone,' she said, addressing trans individuals. 'I see you. We all see you. We stand with you. And trans actress Nava Mau, who won for her work in Baby Reindeer, spoke about the importance of labor and solidarity. 'I hope that we can all take into account labor as we move into this next chapter,' she said. 'We don't know what is going to happen, but we do know our power. We do know that we get to decide who we work with; we get to decide what we work on. Even if it doesn't feel that way, we do have all of the power. Because we are the people, and our labor is everything. So please, please, let's stick together. We can do this. We're going to get through it. Thank you so much.' The 40th annual Spirit Awards, hosted by Aidy Bryant, took place at the beach in Santa Monica and streamed live on IMDb and Film Independent's YouTube channels.
