Three more held after 'gun pointed at police'
A further three people have been arrested after a gun was allegedly pointed at a police officer's face. The incident unfolded when officers approached a group seen riding e-bikes dangerously on Great Clowes Street, Salford, at about 12:00 BST on Tuesday. When they went to arrest one member of the group, another aimed a "suspected firearm" in an officer's face before fleeing. A 32-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday night in the Whalley Range area of Manchester on suspicion of possessing a firearm with intent to cause fear and possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. Two women, aged aged 56 and 33, were arrested on suspicion of assisting him and a gun believed to have been used in the incident was also recovered, Greater Manchester Police said. It comes after two men, aged 20 and 21, were arrested shortly after the incident, which saw one police officer using a Taser and calling for support. Det Supt Simon Moyles said: "This was a frightening and totally unacceptable incident that occurred in broad daylight." Witnesses or anyone with information has been urged to contact police. Masked cyclist 'pulled gun from his socks and threatened cop'
A masked cyclist pulled a gun from his socks and then threatened a police officer with a handgun, according to eye-witnesses. The officer, who was out tackling a youths said to be riding e-bikes dangerously, came face-to-face with someone who was 'brandishing' what appeared to be a firearm in Broughton in Salford at around noon on Tuesday (May 20, 2025), according to Greater Manchester Police. The cop was said to have drawn his Taser stun gun and shouted 'Taser, Taser - get down, get down' at a fleeing cyclist who then pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his socks, according to eye-witnesses spoken to by the Manchester Evening News. Two suspects, aged 20 and 21, were later arrested about a mile away on North George Street. The drama was witnessed by two Salford Council parking enforcement officers, who were in a liveried vehicle, who went to the aid of the police officer who had pursued a cyclist onto Upper Camp Street. One of the officers told the Manchester Evening News: "We jumped out of the car and went to help the officer. We saw that he was struggling and then brandished the Taser and he tried to Taser him but it didn't work. We just jumped out and tried to assist and we ran over." He said they 'back off' when they saw the cyclist pull what appeared to be a 'black hand pistol' from his sock. The cyclist than fell from his bike and fled towards some houses, jumping over fences and through back gardens. He was said to have thrown away the gun as he ran. The cyclist had been wearing a balaclava over his head, a black top and grey tracksuit bottoms, he said. He went on that the officer was 'on his own' and that they were determined to help. Today forensics specialists were examining the scene, particularly the push bike on which the gunman had been riding and which was abandoned. The two people arrested were being held on suspicion of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence. "Both remain in police custody for questioning," said a statement from GMP, who also confirmed an e-bike was recovered on Fenny Street and a suspected firearm was found on Upper Camp Street. Following the drama, Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles from our Salford district said: 'This incident is entirely unacceptable and highlights how quickly situations faced by our frontline officers can escalate. Our officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and should never be placed in such danger. 'We will always use every resource available to bring those responsible to justice. No one is above the law, and we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour on our streets.' Seven people were arrested and a crossbow was recovered following reports of a gun being seen during a disturbance. Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to Romney Street in Salford at about 21.30 BST on Tuesday, with a 54-year-old man arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon. Six teenagers, aged 16-18, were also arrested on suspicion of affray after fighting was broken up by officers. Police issued a 24-hour dispersal order for Cheetham Street West, Littleton Road, Poppy Lane, Langley Road South and Lissadel Street. "Our frontline officers' rapid response to a concerning report prevented what could have been a dangerous incident from occurring," Det Supt Simon Moyles said in a statement. "There was a large group of youths gathering in the area, and officers intervened in fights and helped several young people return home safely. Thankfully, no one at the scene required medical treatment. "Our investigation is moving at a pace. We have arrested seven people and taken a weapon off the streets while enquiries are ongoing. "A police presence will remain in the area as we conduct enquiries and gather evidence. Neighbourhood officers will be patrolling around to provide reassurance to the local community." Every Salford area hit by dispersal order after gun pointed at crowd in night of terror
Police chiefs have beefed up their powers for 24 hours after a night of terror on Salford's streets. Screams were heard as a gun was pointed at a crowd in Charlestown, while officers broke up fighting among a large group of youths. Armed police stormed Romney Street and Littleton Road at around 9.30pm on Monday night (April 14) following reports of a disturbance involving a gun. Six teenagers, aged 16 to 18, were arrested on suspicion of affray - while Greater Manchester Police says several young people were returned home from the scene. The force issued a dispersal order on large parts of Charlestown at 10.47pm last night, lasting 24 hours into tonight. The order was issued under section 34 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and means police can order anyone to move on while it remains in force, to prevent further disorder. It covers Cheetham Street West, Littleton Road, Poppy Lane, Langley Road South and Lissadel Street - plus several smaller streets in between them. A map showing every area issued the dispersal order can be seen below. A cordon remains in place today (Tuesday) and police are expected to remain in the area throughout the day.
