Masked cyclist 'pulled gun from his socks and threatened cop'
A masked cyclist pulled a gun from his socks and then threatened a police officer with a handgun, according to eye-witnesses.
The officer, who was out tackling a youths said to be riding e-bikes dangerously, came face-to-face with someone who was 'brandishing' what appeared to be a firearm in Broughton in Salford at around noon on Tuesday (May 20, 2025), according to Greater Manchester Police.
The cop was said to have drawn his Taser stun gun and shouted 'Taser, Taser - get down, get down' at a fleeing cyclist who then pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his socks, according to eye-witnesses spoken to by the Manchester Evening News.

Armed police and the police helicopter was scrambled following the drama close the junction with Great Clowes Street and Upper Camp Street in Broughton. Two suspects, aged 20 and 21, were later arrested about a mile away on North George Street.
The drama was witnessed by two Salford Council parking enforcement officers, who were in a liveried vehicle, who went to the aid of the police officer who had pursued a cyclist onto Upper Camp Street.
One of the officers told the Manchester Evening News: "We jumped out of the car and went to help the officer. We saw that he was struggling and then brandished the Taser and he tried to Taser him but it didn't work. We just jumped out and tried to assist and we ran over."
He said they 'back off' when they saw the cyclist pull what appeared to be a 'black hand pistol' from his sock. The cyclist than fell from his bike and fled towards some houses, jumping over fences and through back gardens. He was said to have thrown away the gun as he ran.
The cyclist had been wearing a balaclava over his head, a black top and grey tracksuit bottoms, he said. He went on that the officer was 'on his own' and that they were determined to help.
Today forensics specialists were examining the scene, particularly the push bike on which the gunman had been riding and which was abandoned.
The two people arrested were being held on suspicion of possessing a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of unlawful violence.
"Both remain in police custody for questioning," said a statement from GMP, who also confirmed an e-bike was recovered on Fenny Street and a suspected firearm was found on Upper Camp Street.
Following the drama, Detective Superintendent Simon Moyles from our Salford district said: 'This incident is entirely unacceptable and highlights how quickly situations faced by our frontline officers can escalate. Our officers work tirelessly to keep our communities safe and should never be placed in such danger.
'We will always use every resource available to bring those responsible to justice. No one is above the law, and we will not tolerate this kind of behaviour on our streets.'

Broward sheriff reinstates deputies charged in jail fight, says ‘public corruption' led to arrests
An incensed Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony announced Friday the reinstatement of three detention deputies recently arrested over a fight with an inmate, describing the decision to charge them as evidence of 'public corruption and favors for friends.' The three deputies, Denia Walker, 37, Cleopatra Johnnie, 47, and Sgt. Zakiyyah Polk, 44, were arrested on felony aggravated battery charges last week following an investigation by the Broward State Attorney's Office. The three women were processing Samantha Caputo, 38, who had been arrested on a DUI charge, when an argument ensued and she flung her bra at one of the deputies, according to jail footage and arrest warrants. The altercation then became physical, though most of it occurred off camera. Caputo lost consciousness during the fight and suffered multiple injuries, saying in a sworn statement that she was in fear for her life. The deputies also had injuries. At a news conference Friday, Tony was flanked by the deputies' private attorneys as he repeatedly condemned the State Attorney's Office over its charging decisions both in the jail fight and in other cases while suggesting that prosecutors treated Caputo differently because of her name and connections. He did not elaborate on what those connections were. 'This is most certainly a miscarriage of justice and exhibits signs and symptoms of public corruption in itself. Favors for friends,' Tony said, adding that there are individuals who 'are selectively charged and those who are not. Is it their last name? Is it they're a power player or influence in this community?' The Sheriff's Office will foot the bill of the three deputies' criminal defense and all of them will be reinstated to full duty, Tony said. Tony began the news conference by going through the numbers of potential criminal cases involving his deputies that he has sent to the State Attorney's Office, arguing that prosecutors have repeatedly declined to charge them. He then had reporters watch segments of the jail footage from the Oct. 4, 2022, incident to show that the deputies acted professionally. All of the deputies 'demonstrated only the level of force necessary' to get Caputo into compliance, Tony said. BSO nursing staff treated Caputo immediately after the incident. She had significant bruising underneath her right eye and a bruised and swollen face, according to the warrants. At a hospital after she was released, she learned she had a skin infection where she had been shocked with a Taser. The deputies also sustained injuries during the fight, Tony said, including a bite that fractured the bones in Polk's finger. Caputo had been charged with aggravated battery following the fight, but the State Attorney's Office dropped those charges, as well as the original DUI charge, another decision that he suggested was selective treatment. 'I don't care if it's the Caputos, the Thurstons, the Rockefellers, the Vanderbilts, the Trumps or the goddamn Obamas,' Tony said. 'It doesn't matter when you're in Broward County. Everyone's going to be held to the same standards.' The State Attorney's Office did not immediately respond to Tony's allegations Friday afternoon. ‘Terrified' black man died after police restrained him, inquest hears
A vulnerable and 'terrified' black man who was suffering a medical emergency and crying out for help died after police dragged him across a bathroom floor by his collar and handcuffed him, an inquest jury has heard. Godrick Osei, 35, who was said to be experiencing acute behavioural disturbance (ABD), became 'floppy' and suffered a fatal collapse within two minutes of being restrained. Relatives of Osei have claimed at the inquest in Truro that he was treated 'inhumanely' because of his race, which was denied by the Devon and Cornwall police officers involved in the incident. Osei's family described him as a deeply loved son, brother, father and uncle, a 'gentle giant' who had struggled with his mental health after the death of his father. The inquest heard Osei, a student, experienced ABD in the early hours of Sunday 3 July 2022 after taking cannabis and cocaine, and drinking alcohol. He thought he was being chased by someone and called the police asking for help before breaking into a care home in Truro and entering a narrow bathroom. Care home staff called 999 and when police officers arrived, Osei was locked inside the bathroom screaming and calling for help. Officers forced their way in and found Osei on the floor. One of the officers, PC Peter Boxall, told the inquest on Wednesday that he dragged Osei by his collar as this was the safest way to get him out of the narrow space. He argued that handcuffing him was justified for the safety of the officers and members of the public, including Osei. Una Morris, the family's lawyer, suggested to Boxall that his attitude changed when he saw Osei was black. He told a colleague to 'red dot' him – aim a Taser at him, though the electrical weapon was not discharged – and said: 'Fucking hell, look at the sight of his fingers,' the inquest heard. The lawyer asked Boxall if dragging a black man by the collar across the floor and swearing at him was 'inhumane'. Boxall replied that the man's race made no difference. 'We needed to gain control,' he said. However, he apologised for his language. Morris put it to Boxall that Osei was 'terrified'. The officer replied there was a 'certain amount of shock on his face'. Osei's family also claimed Boxall kicked Osei while he was on the floor, but he denied this. Within two minutes of being restrained, Osei collapsed and died. The inquest heard Osei had ABD, which presents with symptoms such as extreme agitation, paranoia, rapid breathing and sweating, and can be exacerbated by restraint. Boxall said he had been trained in ABD but had not recognised it in Osei. Earlier this week, the inquest heard there was an unfounded suspicion that Osei may have been a black man suspected of pushing a man from a bridge in Truro into the river the night before. Morris told the inquest the colour of the two men's skin was their only similarity. She suggested that this was an indicator of 'racial bias'. Rosie Antonio, another of the five officers who attended, said she had been worried that Osei could have a knife because care home staff reported he had blood on him and she heard the sound of a metal object hitting a hard surface. Antonio, who has since left the police, said she had had a 'small amount' of training on ABD but did not think when she arrived at the scene that this was what Osei was experiencing. A third officer, PC Katie Bagguley, said it did not cross her mind that it could have been ABD. The inquest continues.

Drivers warned to expect disruption as Mancunian Way closed this weekend
Drivers are facing disruption this weekend as Mancunian Way will be closed for most of Saturday and Sunday. The council has confirmed the A57(M) and A635(M), and its slip roads, will close from 5am on Saturday (June 7) to 7pm on Sunday (June 8). It will be closed in both directions from the Chester Road roundabout to Fairfield Street. There will also be a lane closure both east and westbound at the Chester Road roundabout from 6.30am - 9.30am both days, and the inbound lane of Princess Road (heading towards Manchester) between 6.30am and 11.15am both days. She said: 'The annual inspection of the Mancunian Way is a vital job which ensures that the tens of thousands of daily users of this road can go about their journey in safety. 'We do expect a level of disruption throughout this process so wherever possible we'd advise people to travel via public transport, or plan an alternate route ahead to avoid the work locations. 'Safety will always be our number one priority and I'd like to say thank you in advance for the patience of road users during this period of works."
