Bereaved family receives Simpan SSPN payout

PUTRAJAYA: The family of the late Poovan Arumugam, 52, a government officer who died of a heart attack in June, on Tuesday received benefits from Skim Simpanan Pendidikan Nasional (Simpan SSPN) savings and takaful protection. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, who led the visit to the family home under National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN)'s Ziarah Kasih Simpan SSPN programme, said the payout demonstrated how Simpan SSPN could ease the burden of families facing unexpected loss. "This is the benefit of saving in Simpan SSPN. Even though the deposits made did not reach the total amount received today, the takaful coverage ensures that the family is protected in times of hardship." Also present during the visit were PTPTN chairman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim, PTPTN chief executive Ahmad Dasuki Abdul Majid, and Higher Education Leadership Academy (AKEPT) director Prof Harshita Aini Haroon. Poovan, who had opened accounts under both Simpan SSPN Prime and Plus for himself and his three children, left behind his wife, V. Sivagami, 49, and their children aged 10, 15 and 19. His eldest is already pursuing studies at a local university. Under his accounts, the family received RM103,822.56 in total, comprising RM4,822.56 from Simpan SSPN Prime and RM99,000 from Simpan SSPN Plus. Zambry said the ministry's immediate priority was to ensure the children's education was not disrupted. "What is most important is to guarantee the continuity of the children's education." He added that Sivagami was highly qualified, holding a master's degree in education and a diploma in early childhood education from Universiti Malaya. "With her background, we will also consider how she might be supported, so she can continue to provide for her family while ensuring her children's future is secure." Zambry said the case underscored the wider value of Simpan SSPN, which not only offers tax relief, matching grants and competitive dividends, but also provides takaful protection that can make a significant difference to families in times of loss. "This is one example of how planning ahead, even with small monthly commitments, can leave behind a safety net," he said. "It is a reminder to all parents to take advantage of such schemes to secure their children's education."

RM689 million in Sabah SSPN deposits

Published on: Sunday, July 27, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 27, 2025 By: Cynthia D Baga Text Size: 'Education funds such as the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) play an important role in ensuring access to education is not affected by financial constraints," Mustapha said. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has so far received National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) deposits amounting to RM689.84 million, with more than 500,000 accounts opened since it was introduced in 2004 up to June 30 this year. Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, said this is a proud achievement and proof that the support of Simpan SSPN depositors remains strong. 'I have been informed that since 2004 the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) has focused on the mission of encouraging savings to reduce society's dependence on loans. Alhamdulillah, over more than two decades, Simpan SSPN has continued to record sustainable performance every year and gained the confidence and trust of the public. 'I hope that Simpan SSPN will become the best choice for parents to save consistently for a guaranteed future in education. 'Take the opportunity today to start saving with Simpan SSPN, which offers various benefits and privileges. Savings for education is a form of long-term investment that ensures the future of children. 'The development of the country's education does not only depend on the provision of infrastructure and quality educators, but also requires strong support from the aspect of effective financial planning. 'Education funds such as the National Education Savings Scheme (Simpan SSPN) play an important role in ensuring access to education is not affected by financial constraints," he said at the Anak Warisan Simpan SSPN 2025 carnival (Kawan) organised by PTPTN, Saturday, at the Exhibition Hall in Complex Karamunsing. According to Mustapha, since 2022 until June this year, about RM77.01 million had been allocated by the State Government through the Deputy State Secretary Office (Special Duties) for incentives for programmes such as Bistari, Budi and Bakti. 'It includes contributions in the form of Simpan SSPN accounts for several programmes, namely the Birth Incentive under the State Education Fund Compassionate Assistance (Bistari) with an allocation of RM4.12 million. 'This incentive targets babies born in Sabah with a contribution of RM100. 'In 2025, this assistance will also be extended to Year 1 pupils in primary schools, with an estimated 25,000 students set to receive this contribution. 'The One-Off Cash Assistance for IPT Registration (Budi) with an allocation of RM49.89 million is to help Sabahan students from the B40 and M40 groups who have received offers to further their studies at local and international higher learning institutions, with a contribution of RM1,500 for Foundation/Matriculation/Diploma-level programmes and RM2,000 for Degree-level programmes, and the Special Examination Cash Assistance Incentive (Bakti) with an allocation of RM23 million. 'This assistance is given to students from the B40 group who will be sitting for major examinations such as SPM, STPM and STAM, with a contribution of RM200. 'Therefore, I urge the State Government, government agencies and the private sectors to make Simpan SSPN the main choice for providing incentives to employees, students and others,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? KOTA KINABALU (July 26): The Anak Warisan Simpan SSPN (Kawan) Carnival 2025, organised by the National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN), is poised to foster a culture of saving and instil positive lifelong values within the community. Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Ts Mustapha Sakmud described the carnival as a progressive initiative that promotes financial literacy, strengthens family values, and preserves cultural heritage among Malaysia's youth. 'This PTPTN initiative aligns with the Ministry of Higher Education's aspiration to produce a knowledgeable, financially literate, and competitive generation,' he said when officiating the programme at Karamunsing shopping complex here on Saturday. Mustapha highlighted the importance of sound financial planning in supporting the country's higher education financing efforts. He said the Simpan SSPN scheme has proven to be an effective savings instrument, helping parents prepare for their children's education without relying entirely on loans. 'Since its inception in 2004, Simpan SSPN has recorded RM21.93 billion in accumulated deposits as of June 30 this year, with 6.98 million accounts opened. In Sabah alone, deposits exceeded RM689.84 million across more than 500,000 accounts, reflecting strong public trust in the scheme,' he said. Mustapha also shared the story of the late Mohd Roslan Abdul Rahim, a Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) member and Simpan SSPN depositor who died in an accident in May. His family received RM193,000 in takaful and death benefit protection. 'This shows that Simpan SSPN is not only a savings tool but also a form of financial protection for families,' he added. He commended the Sabah state government for allocating RM77.01 million towards educational incentives through programmes such as State Education Savings Assistance (Bistari), Higher Education Institution Registration Cash Assistance (Budi), and Special Examination Cash Assistance (Budi) from 2022 to June 2025. These initiatives benefit infants, Year One students, higher education students, and major examination candidates. Meanwhile, PTPTN chairwoman Datuk Seri Norliza Abdul Rahim reaffirmed the agency's mission to prevent students from dropping out due to financial constraints. 'As the main higher education fund in Malaysia, PTPTN continues to implement impactful programmes to raise awareness about the importance of education and financial planning,' she said. She added that Kawan 2025 takes a community and family-based approach, embedding values such as thrift and family integrity to nurture a resilient, harmonious Madani generation. Held simultaneously in all 14 states, the carnival featured poetry, syair, seloka and Simpan SSPN Action Song competitions, as well as cultural performances under the 'Heritage' theme, lucky draws, and engaging family activities. A Simpan SSPN counter also offered exclusive souvenirs to new depositors. Norliza noted that Simpan SSPN offers multiple benefits, including income tax relief of up to RM8,000 per year, takaful coverage, matching grants of up to RM10,000 per eligible family, and syariah-compliant, competitive dividends. She also expressed appreciation for the Sabah government's support of PTPTN's financial literacy and CSR efforts, along with the contributions of public and private sector partners. 'We hope Kawan 2025 serves as an effective platform for strengthening the savings culture, instilling heritage values, and supporting the growth of Malaysia's higher education sector, in line with PTPTN's motto—'Your Opportunity for Success',' she said. During the event, the District Education Offices (PPDs) of Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Papar and Tuaran received certificates of appreciation for promoting the Education Savings Club Module in schools, in support of the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013–2025.
