(Pexels pic) PETALING JAYA : A highway maintenance worker accused of sexually assaulting a child fostered by his wife two years ago has been ordered to enter his defence. Buletin TV3 reported that sessions court judge Sayani Nor made the decision after finding that the prosecution led by Othman Affan Ismail had proven a prima facie case against Asran Tahir, 42. Sayani said the decision was made after an examination of witness statements and the exhibits presented. She said the accused had the choice of giving a sworn or unsworn statement from the dock or remaining silent. Lawyer Syafie Naim from the National Legal Aid Foundation said his client would give a sworn statement from the dock and present a witness in his defence on June 16. Asran, a father of two, is accused of sexually assaulting a four-year-old girl in the care of his wife while the child's parents were outstation for work. He is accused of committing the offence at a house in Simpang Renggam, Kluang, Johor, between 11am and 6.45pm on Sept 19, 2023, and faces up to 20 years' imprisonment and a whipping if convicted. Asran is being temporarily held at the Muar correctional centre as he failed to pay his bail of RM10,000.
