'Deliberately Hostile to their Customers': Plan Changes Prove Fertile Ground for Verizon Stock (NYSE:VZ)
There is good news today for some customers of communications stock Verizon (VZ). However, there is bad news for other customers. Some Verizon plans are getting changes, and while some of the changes will be welcome, some of the changes will be much less so. This combination of good and bad news left investors just a bit upbeat, as shares notched up fractionally in Wednesday afternoon's trading. First, there is good news for two mobile plans, specifically, the Simple Mobile and Total Wireless plans. Anyone with a Simple Mobile plan will get an upgrade, reports note, as all five levels of the Simple Mobile plan are in line for such service. The upgrades all focus on internationally calling, and data use while traveling. For instance, the $25 Unlimited plan got an upgrade from three gigabytes of data to 15. The $30 Unlimited plan got its data bumped up from five gigabytes to 20, and the $40 Unlimited plan increased from 15 gigabytes to 30. The other two plans were unlimited to begin with, so they have only increased the number of countries which offer free calling. Total Wireless customers, however, will get an upgrade, but only if they have one of the two highest levels of service. The 5G Unlimited plan and the Total Base 5G Unlimited plans will get their international calling ranges expanded significantly, with international calling to 180 countries and roaming coverage in 30. This should go a long way toward keeping those customers in the fold. Not Everyone Will Be This Pleased, Of Course But then, Verizon decided to make some changes that will likely be less well-received. The Unlimited and More Unlimited tablet plans are both out, and these will be replaced by three new plans. The Welcome plan looks a lot like the Unlimited plan, except where the Unlimited plan had five gigabytes of data, Welcome only has two. More Unlimited seems to have been replaced with the Unlimited Plus plan, which offers unlimited data, as well as 100 gigabytes of 'premium mobile hotspot' data. This is available at $25 a month, which suggests that Verizon is eager to push customers into this tier. But customers are less than sure, with one customer declaring on social media: 'At this point, it's deliberately hostile to their customers. It's almost like they want to get users off to reduce congestion and drive us away.' Is Verizon Stock a Good Buy Right Now? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Moderate Buy consensus rating on VZ stock based on eight Buys and nine Holds assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Starting August 28, the two no-contract prepaid providers under Verizon's Value portfolio of prepaid brands will offer new international calling, texting, and roaming benefits. Both brands operate on Verizon's network. The updated plans come as more Americans travel beyond traditional destinations like Canada, Mexico, and the UK. Verizon noted in a press release that demand for connectivity in Asia, Latin America, and other regions is growing, with nearly 29 million US travelers heading to Asia last year. Verizon says the new plans are designed to meet these changing travel patterns of Americans, making it easier and more affordable to stay connected abroad. Travel patterns are changing, with more people in the US venturing outside the country and needing to stay connected. To accommodate this surge, Verizon is boosting the international options in its prepaid Simple Mobile and Total Wireless phone brands starting Aug. 28. Most phone plans include options to call and text people in Canada and Mexico, along with some roaming options for US travelers. Depending on the plan, those options are extended to many other countries around the globe. But you often end up paying for a more expensive plan than you need in order to get the travel benefits. Now, the Simple Mobile and Total Wireless brands are expanding their international options and increasing data allotments so you can travel using the plan you carry every day without the stress of finding local coverage. Be sure to check the details for specific countries on the site. Here's how they break down: The $25 Unlimited plan includes 15GB of high-speed data (up from 3GB) and unlimited calling to more than 100 countries. The $30 Unlimited plan includes 20GB of high-speed data (up from 5GB) and unlimited calling to more than 125 countries (up from 100 countries). The $40 Unlimited plan includes 30GB of high-speed data (up from 15GB) and unlimited calling to more than 125 countries (up from 100 countries). The $50 Unlimited World plan, formerly named the Truly Unlimited plan, includes unlimited high-speed data and unlimited calling to more than 200 countries (a doubling of the number of countries from before). The $60 Unlimited World Plus plan, formerly the Truly Unlimited Plus plan, includes unlimited access to Verizon's fastest network, 5G Ultra Wideband (where available) and unlimited high-speed data. It also doubles the number of countries with unlimited calling to over 200, and offers international roaming in more than 140 countries. Total Wireless Plans The top two Total Wireless plans, Total 5G Unlimited ($50 a month) and Total 5G Unlimited Plus ($60 a month), feature unlimited high-speed data, including 5G Ultra Wideband speeds. As of Aug. 28, roaming coverage for those plans doubles to more than 30 countries and international calling to 180 countries.
