Singaporean falls from height in workplace accident near Padang, dies
A 43-year-old Singaporean man died after he fell while abseiling from a tower at a worksite near the Padang on May 30. When contacted, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said that the man - a freelance industrial rope access worker - was rappelling down an 18m-high steel tower in Connaught Drive when his single anchorage rope failed, causing him to fall. The man was rushed to Singapore General Hospital after the fall, where he died from his injuries. "As a general safety reminder, personnel descending tall steel towers must utilise appropriate fall protection systems, such as secondary independent lifelines and other suitable safety devices," said the ministry, adding that it is investigating the incident. In a media reply, the man's employer, Showtec International, said that the man was a rigger and that it is assisting the man's family. According to the National Youth Council's Discover On My Way website, riggers specialise in lifting equipment operations and conduct regular system checks and upkeep. Between February and April 2025, a total of 13 stop-work orders and fines totalling more than $375,000 were issued to firms found to have flouted rules that protect workers carrying out tasks at high places, said MOM on May 20. The safety violations were discovered during inspections conducted between February and April at about 550 worksites.

Man, 43, Dies After Falling from Height in Workplace Accident in Singapore
A 43-year-old Singaporean man died after falling from a tower at a worksite near the Padang on May 30 while he was abseiling. The Ministry of Manpower said that the man, who was a freelance industrial rope access worker, was rappelling down an 18m-high steel tower on Connaught Drive when his single anchorage rope failed, leading him to plummet. According to reports, the man was immediately taken to Singapore General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The ministry said, as quoted by The Straits Times, "As a general safety reminder, personnel descending tall steel towers must utilise appropriate fall protection systems, such as secondary independent lifelines and other suitable safety devices." The investigation is ongoing. In a media statement, the man's employer, Showtec International, stated the victim was a rigger and that the company is aiding the man's family. Riggers, according to the National Youth Council's Discover On My Way website, work with lifting equipment and perform regular system checks and maintenance. Between February and April 2025, 13 stop-work orders and fines totaling more than $375,000 were issued to enterprises judged to have violated rules protecting workers performing duties in high areas, according to MOM earlier in May. The safety infractions were identified during inspections of around 550 work sites from February to April.

Fire breaks out at Whampoa HDB block; five people taken to hospital
SINGAPORE: A fire broke out at a Housing Board block at 20 Jalan Tenteram on Thursday (May 29), said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). Five people were taken to hospital as a result of the blaze, which also prompted the precautionary evacuation of about 40 others from the block. In a post on social media, SCDF said that firefighters responded to the fire at about 11.40am, and that the fire involved items placed along the corridor outside units on the second and third floors. "The fire had also affected the inside of both these units," it said, adding that the fire was extinguished using two water jets. "As a result of the fire, a few neighbouring units also sustained heat and soot damage." Two people were taken to Singapore General Hospital, two to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and one to KK Women's and Children's Hospital for smoke inhalation. "The cause of the fire is under investigation," SCDF said. SCDF advised members of the public to "help maintain a safe living environment by keeping common corridors, lift lobbies and staircases free of clutter". "A cluttered corridor can increase the risk of fire spread, hinder evacuation efforts and delay SCDF's response during an emergency," it said.

Orchard Central attack: Repeat offender gets 10 weeks' jail for assaulting 2 men
A repeat offender will be spending more time behind bars after he assaulted two men at Orchard Central shopping mall following a night of merry-making on New Year's Day in 2024. Adam Hambali Seddon was previously released from prison in August 2023 after serving a sentence for an undisclosed offence and placed on a remission order. As part of the order, the Singaporean was supposed to keep himself out of trouble from Aug 12, 2023, to Dec 10, 2024. However, he reoffended on Jan 1, 2024, when he rained blows on two men - a 32-year-old promoter at a nightspot called Ark11 and a 19-year-old customer at the same club, located on the 11th floor of the mall. On May 23, Adam, 32, was sentenced to 10 weeks' jail after he pleaded guilty to two counts of assault. He will also spend an additional 70 days behind bars after breaching the remission order. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Delicia Tan told the court that some unnamed people were also involved in the brawl, during which the two victims were stabbed and slashed with at least one weapon. Details on the type of weapon were not stated in court documents. However, the court heard that Adam was not the one who had used a weapon to attack the men. DPP Tan said that Adam went to Ark11 with his friends and his fiance on Dec 31, 2023. He became intoxicated and got into a dispute with an unknown person at the club at around 4am the next day. The club promoter tried to calm him down, but he suddenly punched the promoter, causing the man to fall. Adam also kicked the victim and the latter's girlfriend before walking out of the nightspot. Investigations revealed that the promoter left the club soon after, but was assaulted by a group of people. At least one weapon was used to stab and slash him. During the commotion, the 19-year-old victim stood nearby to watch, before making his way to a restroom. Adam then approached the teenager and punched his face, causing him to fall. Adam and several other unknown people then rained blows on the teenager, who was also stabbed. The police were alerted shortly before 4.15am on Jan 1, 2024, but Adam fled before officers arrived at the scene. He was arrested the following day. Both victims were taken to Singapore General Hospital, where they were found with multiple stab wounds. The club promoter was given eight days of hospitalisation leave, while the teenager received 30 days. On May 23, DPP Tan asked the court to sentence Adam to up to 16 weeks' jail, stressing that he was the first person to assault the teenager before the other assailants joined in. She also said that the club promoter was merely trying to break up the argument between Adam and the other club-goer before Adam punched him. Defence lawyer Riko Isaac, who pleaded for his client to be given not more than 10 weeks' jail, told the court: "Our client wishes to move on from his chequered past and have a peaceful life going forward." The lawyer also said that Adam had not set out to become embroiled in the brawl when he went out that night.
