‘+60 points for following crowd measures': Singaporeans jump on viral ‘aura farming' trend

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Dika's fame has led him to being named as a tourism ambassador for Riau. SINGAPORE - An 11-year-old boy from Indonesia displayed so much rizz during a traditional boat race recently that he sparked a whole host of copycats, or aura farmers. No cap. Athletes, politicians and even the military have taken to social media to mimic Rayyan Arkan Dikha , who went viral after a clip of him dancing during a pacu jalur race in the Indonesian province of Riau , was posted online in January . Clad in an all-black traditional costume and a pair of oversized shades, the boy - known as Dika - displayed his moves at the head of a boat with much swagger, as the rest behind him paddled furiously. The term aura was popularised by Gen Alpha, to refer to something that is cool. To aura farm is to do something to up one's cool factor. Among the latest to jump on the aura farming trend was the Singapore Navy, which on July 16 posted a video of its sailors copying Dika and Co. on board the MSRV Protector , a maritime security and response vessel. Flexing much? The video amassed more than 474,000 likes on Instagram and 5.3 million likes on Tiktok. Instagram user Kerstin Ong commented: 'Love it when they try to speak the Gen Z and Gen Alpha languages these days.' Not to be outdone, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) did their own version on board on Tiktok on July 20 , on an SCDF boat while en route to the Marina Bay for the National Day Parade (NDP) maritime display. That post garnered over 37,000 likes. Slay. The Singapore Police Force, too, was vibing at a NDP rehearsal recently, and posted a recreation of the dance on '+60 points for following crowd measures,' read the caption that accompanied the July 18 post. The video had over 38,000 likes as at July 21 . Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu also jumped on the hype train, but for a good cause. In an Instagram post on July 14 , she partook in the trend while at an Adventist Community Services event. 'Aura farming not to impress but for a good cause,' the post read. Elsewhere, the likes of Taylor Swift's boyfriend and NFL player Travis Kelce , Formula 1 driver Alex Albon, South Korean boy band NCT and French football team Paris Saint-Germain have also bought into the trend. The original video showed Dika during a pacu jalur race, a historic event that is part of an annual festival where children dance at the front of boats in a race to motivate the rowers. Children are generally chosen for the position as they tend to be light enough to balance on the canoe without adding too much additional weight. The boat race typically happens in August. The vast fame that Dika has amassed after going viral has led to him being named as a tourism ambassador for Riau, where he lives, according to the New York Times.

Indian Navy to participate in 32nd edition of SIMBEX exercise in Singapore

The Indian Navy will participate in the 32nd edition of exercise SIMBEX as part of its engagement with the Singapore Navy. It is one of the longest uninterrupted maritime exercises for India, High Commissioner to Singapore Shilpak Ambule has said. The Singapore India Maritime Bilateral Exercise (SIMBEX) is conducted annually by the Indian Navy and the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN). It will be held in Singapore later this month. It was previously known as Exercise Lion King. "The Indian Navy's engagement with the navies in the region, particularly Singapore, has been an upward trajectory, which, without doubt, has gained from a very well-founded construct established well over three decades ago, and has kept evolving in the past years," Ambule said while addressing over 200 guests on board INS Shakti, part of Eastern Fleet that is visiting Singapore from July 16-19, on Thursday. On the Indian Navy's participation in exercises in the Southeast Asian region, he said, "The growing intensity of these engagements conforms with India's Vision SAGAR and Act East policy, which are aligned to the edificial facet of collaboration, given the changing paradigms and challenges especially in the maritime realm." "This, in the true sense, must also remind us of the essential need for cooperative engagement in this complex domain, which, being mutually inclusive, benefits all by enabling collective tackling of the myriad challenges with resolve, trust and a common understanding," he underlined. Several of the recent complex HARD and SAR operations that the Indian Navy has actively steered and very successfully concluded in the Arabian Sea have been internationally appreciated, the envoy noted. This further underpins the need for collective action to preserve rules-based order in the global commons, he added. "This, as a principle, India views to be critical to uphold safety and free flow of commerce on the high seas. "Given the growing challenge of piracy and action by non-state actors, threats in the oceans continue to pose a serious hazard and mandate the need to hold firm our resolve, and challenge the forces that attempt to contest the normal," Ambule said. In continuation of its resolve and outreach, the Indian Navy will host the International Fleet Review, Multinational Naval Exercise MILAN and the IONS conclave of chiefs at Visakhapatnam in February next year, he said. This will be followed by the Goa Maritime Conclave "to brainstorm the challenges we face, and strengthen Bridges of Friendship between maritime neighbours and the fraternity at large for joint collaboration", he said. Ambule also talked about India's deep historic and cultural linkages with ASEAN countries which have strengthened in the recent past through vibrant economic engagements and prudent sagacity on the need for "security and growth for all in the region". He highlighted the success of the maiden ASEAN-India Maritime exercise held in 2023 and co-hosted by the RSN, saying that it holds testimony to the earnest efforts that promoted jointness and shared learning. "Likewise, India's positive contribution to numerous ASEAN-led mechanisms, namely the ASEAN Regional Forum and ADMM Plus, as well as India's support for strengthening the East Asia Summit, have been acknowledged by the ASEAN member countries. "As we work together closely, Singapore's efforts to strengthen India's connection with ASEAN only exemplify this mutual commitment in furtherance of India's Act East Policy," the envoy said. He also noted that the Indian naval ships' visit is happening as India and Singapore celebrate the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations. Ambule welcomed Rear Admiral Susheel Menon, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, and the entire Indian Navy contingent comprising INS Delhi, Satpura, Shakti and Kiltan, all of which are on a goodwill visit to Singapore as part of their extended deployment. He pointed out that the ships -- Destroyer Delhi, Frigate Satpura, Corvette Kiltan, and vital fleet support ship Shakti -- represent indigenously designed, tech-infused, frontline platforms of the Indian Navy, tailored to manage contemporary needs of extended operations in the high seas. The fleet is to visit the Philippines and Vietnam before returning home to Visakhapatnam.
