We refer to Mr Cheah Kok Keong's letter '
In 2025, let's also mark the 80th year of Singapore's liberation ' (Aug 5).
We agree with Mr Cheah that the 80th anniversary of Singapore's liberation from Japanese occupation on Sept 12, 1945, should not pass off as another normal day. The date also marks the historic end of World War II, as the last major surrender ceremony of the Pacific War took place on that date in the Municipal Hall, now part of National Gallery Singapore.
For the past 20 years, there has been a Singaporean-led multinational committee organising commemoration ceremonies at Kranji War Cemetery. The ceremonies mark significant anniversaries related to WWII, including the Fall of Singapore on Feb 15, 1942, and the End of War on Sept 12, 1945.
The committee this year includes Singaporean organisations such as the National Archives Singapore and SAF Veterans' League, and representatives from Commonwealth countries, including the High Commissions of Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, and the Embassy of Japan.
The ceremonies remember the fallen of all nations, particularly those who defended Singapore from 1941 to 1942.
We also hope the ceremonies will nurture a culture of remembrance among Singaporeans to recognise the sacrifices made daily by our men and women in uniform, especially in the Singapore Armed Forces and the Singapore Civil Defence Force.
This Sept 12, as in previous years, a commemoration ceremony will be held at Kranji War Cemetery from 4pm to 6pm. All are welcome to this ceremony to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWII.
