From tribal threat to theatre staple: Anubhav Sinha traces Popcorn's journey, questions modern movie-watching habits
Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha took to social media to share a thought-provoking note where he traced the history of popcorn. Taking to Instagram, he wrote a lengthy note where he reflected on popcorn's journey from ancient South American roots to becoming an inseparable part of the movie-watching experience. In his post on Instagram, Sinha talked about how popcorn, once considered a low-class snack, rose to prominence during the Great Depression and eventually found its way into cinemas-becoming as iconic as the films themselves. Sharing a photo featuring different types of the beloved snack, the filmmaker wrote, "Big deal on popcorn and cinema these days. Thought I'd disturb the history of this. So it is said that popcorn in South America (then Americans used to speak), and especially tribals in Mexico and Peru have been eating about three and a half thousand years BC. In the early nineteenth century, a man named Charles Crater has found a method to make corn popcorn from steam. There the popcorn tradition began. Then it started trending at fairs, circuses and other events like that." "When cinema halls were built in America in the early 20th century, it was thought in the bar. But it's noisy, dirt spreading and lower class symbol kept out of theaters. The game started in the thirties. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How to Trade ETH/USD Without Holding Ether IC Markets Learn More Undo At the time of the Great Depression. People had no money, and popcorn was cheap. Lihaza opened shops outside theaters and then slowly it was allowed in theaters at higher prices. Remember the poor had food and were slowly sliding up. And cold drinks were also trending. Here the romance of popcorn and cold drink begins." The 'Anek' director added, "Sugar deficiency during and after the Second Pure. Cold drinks in crisis. Costly and reduced. Popcorn and cold transgender started here. The popcorn won. The cold also came back later. Now in cinemas, these two, (Hindustan had samosa, now biryani has reached) earn more or equal money than cinemas in cinemas. The accountability of the filmmaker is that why should we spend so much money and go to watch the movie. This is a reasonable question. But the reasonable question of the filmmaker is that we have only made a film. Someone else selling popcorn and cold. Her civil opinion is also that if you don't like it then just come to watch the movie." Anubhav ended his note writing, "A question also came in the heart related to this. Questions should keep coming in the heart. How much popcorn do we eat in our homes? I eat often. You guys? Once in a week? Once in a month? Less than that? Only in theaters?."

Pahalgam terror attack Modi Govt's ‘security lapse': Owaisi slams Centre – ‘focus on external threats'
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Union government for the security lapse in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed in a terror attack on April 22. The Hyderabad Member of Parliament (MP) also took potshots at Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha over his recent comments that he takes responsibility for the "security failure" in the terror attack. "Pahalgam is a successful example of the Modi government's security lapse," Owaisi said, addressing a public meeting organised at Bodhan town in Telangana on Wednesday night to protest against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. 'Revenge should be taken for Pahalgam. Continue Operation Sindoor. We will question you until those four terrorists who killed the 26 Indians by asking for their religion are caught and killed,' Owaisi said. Owaisi, who was part of India's delegation that travelled to foreign countries after Operation Sindoor, questioned the Union government on its 'inability' to find those behind the Pahalgam terror attack. 'You can know there are Bangladeshis and Rohingyas in Bihar in the name of electoral roll revision. But you had no information on how four terrorists could be in Pahalgam,' Owaisi asked. Slamming J&K L-G Sinha for taking responsibility almost three months after the incident, Owaisi said he should rather 'quit from his post.' In a recent interview with TOI, Sinha, who has completed five years in office, said what happened in Pahalgam was very unfortunate, calling it a security failure. 'Innocent people were brutally killed. I take full responsibility for the incident, which was undoubtedly a security failure. The common belief here has been that terrorists do not target tourists. The location where the attack took place is an open meadow. There is no facility or room for security forces to be present there,' Sinha told TOI. Owaisi also said the alleged incidents of demolishing houses, running bulldozers and "snatching away mosques" are not good for the country. At a time when China is expanding its influence in Bangladesh, he regretted that some in the country talk about things like demolitions and bulldozers. Innocent people were brutally killed. I take full responsibility for the incident, which was undoubtedly a security failure. Owaisi said he wants to tell the BJP leaders that the country faces threats from China and Pakistan. "You pay attention to those who pose a threat to the country. What are you doing inside the country? " he asked.

J&K making rapid strides on path of peace and prosperity: L-G Manoj Sinha
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday said the Union Territory has been making rapid strides on the path of peace and prosperity under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, achieving all-inclusive growth and social justice, since the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019. While delivering a special lecture on 'Jammu and Kashmir Towards Peace' at Gandhi Smriti, at an event presided over by former Union Minister and Gandhi Smriti vice-chairman Vijay Goel, the Lieutenant-Governor said over the past five years, Jammu and Kashmir's economy had more than doubled. Mr. Sinha said under the Prime Minister's visionary leadership, the region was now connected to other parts of the country through railways. There was a massive increase in the influx of tourists with more than 5,000 new hotels constructed over the past four years in Kashmir valley itself. Several infrastructure projects were being implemented and many social welfare programmes launched. A key indicator of development was the ₹1,700-crore profit booked by J&K Bank, which had previously suffered a loss of about ₹1,300 crore. Taking advantage of the incentives being provided by the government, a large number of startups were now coming up. Several premier educational institutions had been set up for the local youth, which was committed to peace, prosperity, unity, and communal harmony in the region. Mr. Sinha said there was a fair and peaceful conduct of Assembly elections in J&K. 'No political party raised any doubt about the election process,' he said, adding that the Panchayati Raj system had also been implemented across the UT successfully. The Lieutenant Governor said after the abrogation of Article 370, no stone pelting incident was reported in the past few years. While earlier, terror outfits would radicalise and recruit an average of about 150 local youth per year, only six such instances were reported last year, and just one so far this year, which was a testimony to the fact that J&K residents were pro-development, he said. Terming the Pahalgam terror attack a conspiracy by Pakistan to trigger communal unrest and once again destabilise J&K, he said there was a spontaneous protest by the locals against the killings. Mr. Sinha said Operation Sindoor displayed the capability of the armed forces to deliver a befitting response to the Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, and that too using indigenous defence systems. 'Since Partition, terrorism has been the State policy of Pakistan,' he said, adding that the international community should work together to eliminate breeding grounds of terrorism.

Pahalgam Attack Terrorists Identified, Won't Live For Long: J&K Lieutenant Governor
New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said on Wednesday that the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack have been identified and will soon be dealt with. While delivering a lecture on 'Jammu and Kashmir: Towards Peace' at the Gandhi Smriti, Manoj Sinha emphasised that any attempts to disrupt peace in the Kashmir Valley will not succeed. "Following the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan received a strong response through Operation Sindoor. Those who carried out the attack have been identified, and I can confidently say they do not have long to live. Good news will come, but it's not appropriate to disclose a specific date. Over the past five years, even the highest leaders of various terrorist organisations are no longer alive, and they will meet the same fate," Sinha said. On April 22, 26 people, mostly tourists, were gunned down by terrorists in an attack at Pahalgam in the Kashmir Valley. In retaliation, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to target terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). "With the efforts of the local administration and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are moving towards making Jammu and Kashmir the state of Gandhi's dreams," Sinha said at the event presided over by former union minister and vice chairman of Gandhi Smriti, Vijay Goel. Discussing developmental projects in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly following the removal of Article 370 in 2019, Sinha highlighted that the Valley has experienced inclusive development in a short time. Highways worth Rs 1.5 lakh crore have been built, over 5000 hotels have opened, and 1013 new startups have been launched, most of which are led by local women, he emphasised, adding that Kashmir is now rapidly advancing towards development. Sinha expressed confidence that every central government scheme is reaching the citizens of Kashmir and mentioned that stone-pelting has become a thing of the past. Despite concerns from the opposition regarding the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the Valley, he claimed that not a single bullet was fired during this period. Although some may not welcome the "changed" atmosphere of the Valley, with the inspiration of Prime Minister Modi, the story of "Sabka Saath and Sabka Vikas" is being written across the state without any "discrimination", he added.
