Caretaker killed for 10k, body dumped in tank in farmhouse
New Delhi: A 47-year-old driver has been arrested for allegedly murdering the caretaker of a Chhatarpur farmhouse and then dumping his body in a septic tank, police said on Sunday. Police said they got information on July 26 that Sita Ram, 42, who worked as a domestic help and caretaker at the south Delhi farmhouse, was missing. He was reportedly alone on the property as the owner was out of town. When other staff members arrived in the morning, they found the farmhouse doors open and Sita Ram nowhere in sight. A missing person report was filed at Mehrauli police station, and a search was launched. Crime and FSL teams were called to the scene," a senior police officer said. As the inquiry progressed, police found that a driver employed at the same farmhouse, Chandra Prakash, was also nowhere to be seen. After questioning, he confessed to the murder and told police officers that he had asked Sita Ram for Rs 10,000, and when the latter refused, he attacked him with a hammer and dumped the body in the septic tank to conceal the crime," the senior police officer added. Sita Ram had been employed as a caretaker and guard at the farmhouse for over a decade, while the accused had been working as a daily-wage driver there for the past seven years. The body of the deceased, Sita Ram – who was employed at the farmhouse for the last 10 years – was found drowned in a septic tank at the property on Saturday. The accused, Chandra Prakash (47), who worked as a driver at the same farmhouse, was arrested from Palam in Southwest Delhi. Police said a missing person report for Sita Ram, originally from Uttar Pradesh, was filed at the Mehrauli police station on July 26. 'Sita Ram used to work as a help at the farmhouse and was alone the night of the incident, as the owner had gone out of Delhi. On July 26 morning, staffers found the doors of the farmhouse open, and Sita Ram missing. After the missing report was filed, his body was recovered from the septic tank of the farmhouse,' DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan said. While questioning the staff at the farmhouse, the police found that Chandra Prakash was missing. He was later traced to Palam in Dwarka. Chandra Prakash, who hails from Almora and has been the driver at the farmhouse for the last seven years, told the police that a loan of Rs 10,000 made him kill Sita Ram. The officer said, 'Using technical surveillance and tips from local sources, police tracked Chandra Prakash's location to Palam in Delhi, where he was apprehended." Upon sustained interrogation, Chandra Prakash confessed to the crime. 'He disclosed that he had requested Rs 10,000 from Sita Ram, but when the latter refused, a heated argument broke out between the two. In a fit of rage, he picked up a hammer and struck Sita Ram on the head, killing him," said the officer, adding that to hide the crime, the accused dumped the body into the septic tank and fled the scene. The murder weapon was recovered from the premises based on Chandra Prakash's confession, and the investigation is ongoing to determine if others were involved or had prior knowledge of the incident.
