Such misuse has also led to a surge in sextortion cases, especially targeted at minors and through social media platforms. PHOTO: REUTERS PETALING JAYA - Artificial intelligence (AI)-generated deepfakes are driving a steep rise in synthetic child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and fuelling addictions to such content, particularly among minors. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigations Department (CID) sexual, women and child investigation division (D11) principal assistant director Siti Kamsiah Hassan said AI is increasingly being misused to generate hyper-realistic CSAM, including deepfake imagery, which is complicating detection and posing challenges for law enforcement in bringing those behind it to book. She said offenders are also exploiting encrypted messaging applications and dark web forums to share CSAM and are communicating anonymously. Ms Siti Kamsiah said such misuse has also led to a surge in sextortion cases, especially targeted at minors and through social media platforms. 'Many of these victims received threats that traumatised them severely and drove them to suicide. Our latest findings based on the cases under investigation show a rise in underage or teenage offenders who have developed an addiction to pornography. Many were found to have downloaded and stored CSAM in cloud storage or their email accounts,' she said in an interview recently. Earlier in May, Ms Siti Kamsiah led a team from her division alongside other units of the CID in a collaborative effort with the Dutch authorities to exchange advanced strategies for combating CSAM and identifying offenders. She said the meeting enabled both nations to carry out crucial discussions on the technical and legislative challenges faced by the authorities. 'We can see how a CyberTipline Report, channelled through the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC), could serve as a document for presentation in court, even in the absence of a mutual legal assistance treaty, or as evidence when none is available against an offender. 'We also discussed the legality of ratifying the acceptance of data evidence obtained by police through hacking into the computers of offenders. 'The sharing of invaluable knowledge and information in the meeting was very beneficial to our police force, especially for the D11. 'It will definitely help make us a united, capable and responsive unit in countering the threat of sexual crimes against children in cyberspace,' she said. Representatives of the Dutch authorities comprised Netherlands police attache Eddy Assens, Transnational Sexual Child Abuse Expertise Centre programme manager Jan van der Helm and Netherlands Public Prosecution Service officers Linda van den Oever, Nicole Smits and Meike Willebrands. Influencers exploiting social media to groom children, say police

KUALA LUMPUR: Sexual grooming of children over the Internet involving influencers is becoming increasingly rampant, say police. According to a report by Kosmo, Federal Police Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan said over 30 per cent of all child sexual cases received involved influencers or those regarded as idols. It is reported that these individuals used their popularity on social media to approach and gain the trust of victims aged 18 and below before committing indecent acts. Siti Kamsiah said on Sunday: "These individuals influence social media and are seen as idols by certain groups. "So, it is easier for them to approach, exploit, and gain the trust of victims, especially children. "Such cases are on the rise because these so-called idols or influential figures are sprouting like mushrooms on social media platforms compared to before. "Not all influencers are social media content creators. Teachers, artistes, athletes or religious figures are often idolised by the public. "However, child grooming cases are becoming more prevalent and easier to commit through social media platforms," she said. Siti Kamsiah stressed that the police was constantly intensifying intelligence efforts, especially in detecting the online sharing of sexual materials. "This step is to curb such activities from being normalised by people because continuous exposure to pornography can lead to sexual addiction. "We are also identifying their online networks, including group members, before making arrests," she said. She added that the police would also work with psychological and criminological units to build a behaviour-based database of offenders. It was reported yesterday that a male influencer was remanded for four days to assist in an investigation into allegations of sending lewd messages to a 14-year-old girl. The 22-year-old man was arrested on Thursday after the Gombak district police headquarters received a report from the victim's mother, who claimed her daughter had received sexual messages and images via social media from the suspect. Commenting on the recent case, Siti Kamsiah said the investigation was still ongoing. The case is being investigated under Section 15 of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017.

Influencer nabbed for allegedly sending sexual message to 14-year-old girl

KUALA LUMPUR: Police yesterday detained an influencer for allegedly sending sexually-explicit messages to a 14-year-old girl. It is understood that the 22-year-old man turned himself in at the Gombak police headquarters. He was remanded today to facilitate investigations. Federal police Sexual, Women and Child Investigation Division (D11) principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan confirmed that a report had been received regarding the incident. "Yes, we have begun our investigation," she said briefly when contacted by Harian Metro today. Earlier, it was reported that the influencer faced public backlash after singer and fellow influencer Caprice revealed several messages allegedly of a sexual nature that were sent to the underage teenager. In a series of posts on his Instagram feed and Stories, Caprice said he was contacted by the girl's mother, who sought his help after her daughter was allegedly sexually harassed by the influencer. Among the screenshots shared were messages and an indecent photo allegedly sent by the influencer to the woman's daughter, supposedly to show a surgery scar. Additionally, the influencer also sent another message apologising to the girl's mother and requesting a meeting to resolve the matter.
