MACC remands NGO chairman over alleged abuse of power, misuse of funds
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has remanded a non-governmental organisation (NGO) chairman for allegedly abusing his power and misappropriating the organisation's funds.
The man, in his 30s, was detained by MACC Selangor after he was believed to have colluded with four other individuals who were arrested yesterday in connection with the case.
Magistrate Sivashangari Nagalingam granted a remand order until June 19 following an application by the MACC at magistrate's court 1 in the Melaka Court Complex this morning.
Sources said the suspect was arrested at around 6.30pm yesterday while giving a statement at the MACC office in Melaka.
"Yesterday, the MACC detained four individuals suspected of abusing their positions by misappropriating funds belonging to an NGO they were involved with.
"Following their arrest, further information led to the arrest of the NGO chairman for allegedly conspiring with the four suspects," a source said.
The alleged offences are believed to have taken place between 2015 and 2025.
Meanwhile, Selangor MACC director Hairuzam Mohmad Amin @ Hamim confirmed the arrest when contacted, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
