Leigh Nash of Sixpence None the Richer to perform at Hoover Public Library

HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) — Leigh Nash, lead singer of the faith-inspired alternative band Sixpence None the Richer, will perform at the Hoover Public Library's theater for two shows May 1-2. Sixpence None the Richer first began in 1992 and became a major touring group with the 1998 single 'Kiss Me.' The group, fronted by Nash, continued through 2004, before taking a break and reuniting in 2007. 'Rooted in Americana sounds that previously underscored albums like 2015's 'The State I'm In' (her first Top 40 hit on Billboard's country chart), The Tide, Vol. 1 found Nash collaborating with icons like Vince Gill and Tanya Tucker, gospel singer CeCe Winans, Raul Malo, Stephen Wilson Jr., Matt Maher and the Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Ruby Amafu,' Nash's website states. The titular song from Nash's most recent album, 'The Tide,' was co-written by Nash and Sixpence None the Richer bandmate Matt Slocum. According to Nash's website, this song is the first new Sixpence None the Richer recording in over a decade. Following this, the band reunited to release their 'Rosemary Hill' EP. The band's first live album, 'Live at Gruene Hall,' was released on April 18. After Nash's performances at the Hoover Public Library, Sixpence None the Richer's tour will continue on May 24 in Nashville. Tickets to Nash's two shows at The Library Theatre can be found here. More than a stage, Lisa's Coachella show becomes a statement

Lisa of Blackpink proved just how comfortable she is on the global stage during solo debut stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, Friday. Marking her third appearance at Coachella — following previous performances with Blackpink in 2019 and 2023 — Lisa made history as the first K-pop act to perform on the festival's stage three times. Her 55-minute set, comprising 13 songs, showcased her musical versatility, commanding stage presence and fashion-forward artistry. She opened with 'Thunder,' from her debut solo studio album 'Alter Ego,' emerging in a reflective silver bodysuit atop a monolithic pillar rising at the center of the stage. She followed with 'Fxck Up the World,' highlighting her aggressive rap style and dynamic choreography. Her vocal range was on full display in tracks such as the retro R&B-infused 'When I'm With You,' the high-energy 'Money' and the soaring ballad 'Dream.' The setlist also included genre-bending tracks such as 'Moonlit Floor,' which samples Sixpence None the Richer's 1990s hit 'Kiss Me' and 'Elastigirl.' Other highlights included the disco track 'Born Again,' the percussive 'Lifestyle' and the retro-styled Gen Z anthem 'Rockstar,' which closed the performance. Throughout the set, Lisa changed her outfit five times — ranging from the futuristic bodysuit to playful Hello Kitty-themed looks and sultry silhouettes. The most eye-catching look resembled a sci-fi movie character, with metal scales and horn-like embellishments evoking a surreal, almost monstrous aura. A sheer bodysuit decorated with fluorescent thread-like patterns created an optical illusion, while other outfits included a pink look featuring Hello Kitty graphics and a bold red leather ensemble. Each outfit matched the mood of the corresponding songs and served as a visual cue for character transformation. All costumes were custom-designed by Asher Levine, known for his work with Lady Gaga and Doja Cat. True to her roots as Blackpink's main rapper and dancer, Lisa commanded the stage with charisma and precision. Her solo appearance sent a clear message: She is ready to stand on her own as a global pop act. Notably, she performed a close-contact twerking routine with male dancers — a move rarely seen on K-pop stages, breaking boundaries of the image and choreography typically expected of K-pop idols. Music critic Lim Hee-yun noted the significance of Lisa's appearance as a soloist. 'Performing at Coachella as both a member of Blackpink and as a solo artist carries great meaning,' Lim said. 'The Sahara Tent is an important stage. While the main Coachella Stage and Outdoor Theatre are central, the Sahara Tent also holds weight — especially among hip-hop artists.' Lisa will perform again at the Sahara Tent April 18.

Music Review: Blackpink star Lisa's 'Alter Ego' is an ambitious, chameleonic solo debut

New York (AP) — Lisa, one-fourth of the K-pop juggernaut Blackpink, has officially stepped out on her own — releasing her first solo album 'Alter Ego." Across rap, dance and pop, the project shows off a versatile artist ready to embrace her time alone in the spotlight. The Thai rapper is the second member of Blackpink to release a full-length solo project after Rosé's sweet side-step from the band, 'Rosie." The album arrives as Lisa makes her acting debut in Season 3 of 'The White Lotus' and prepares to perform at the Oscars — high-profile outings that will further her status as a global phenomenon. After a series of single releases, 'Alter Ego" is the climax of those introductions — an evolution from the hip-hop-pop self-starter heard on her solo debut EP 2021's 'LALISA.' It's an ambitious pursuit, with mostly successful results. As the title suggests, Lisa creates space for experimentation by adopting separate personas — Roxi, Sunni, the '00s pop-channeling Kiki, Speedi and the ferocious rapper Vixi — who appear across the high-concept songs. They allow the artist to jump between sonic languages, with varied attitudes of her vocals and productions. Coupled with Blackpink's history as a cross-genre powerhouse, Lisa's genre-spanning foray into solo pop feels earned. And it works — mostly. Like the band's discography, the tracks are upbeat and self-assured, with edge unique to Lisa: 'Elastigirl' and 'Thunder" are sensual and bold, the former punchy and light to the latter's moody groove. 'F—- Up The World," featuring Future, is quick and aggressive, with an empowered message akin to some of Blackpink's hits. 'Badgrrrl' assures that this Lisa isn't to be messed with: 'I can be your bad girl," she raps. 'Don't treat me like a lady.' The dreamy 'Moonlit Floor (Kiss Me)' interpolates alt-rock band Sixpence None the Richer's 1998 hit 'Kiss Me," lyrics reimagined to depict a Paris romance for a Gen Z audience. Lisa's 'Kiss Me' is glittery and sweet — losing some of the charm of the original, but fitting for a young audience that seeks fresh, catchy soundbites and feels nostalgic for a time before their own. On five of the tracks, Lisa and her alter egos are supported by the hit-makers of the genres they inhabit. Along with Future, Raye and Doja Cat appear on the lush 'Born Again." Megan Thee Stallion brings her confidence to 'Rapunzal.' Rosalía adds Spanish verses and backup vocals on the catchy 'New Woman' while Tyla offers her soulful vocals on 'When I'm With You.' At their best, the impressive roster of international stars allows Lisa to show off her chameleonic adoption of styles, as she and her talented peers riff on top of interesting pop productions. But by being so feature-heavy, the album also muddies its own goal of introducing us to a Lisa that stands on her own. And when she does make herself known, she succeeds. 'Make way, make way, make way/Taking space up in the sky," Lisa sings on 'Thunder." 'I'll take my place up ahead.' That's the confident, independent Lisa we're looking for. ___ For more AP reviews of recent music releases, visit: Elise Ryan, The Associated Press
