Indiana Fever Star Gets Technical Foul Against Mystics
Indiana Fever Star Gets Technical Foul Against Mystics originally appeared on Athlon Sports. On Tuesday, at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, the Indiana Fever faced the Washington Mystics in a matchup that saw both frontcourt stalwarts, newcomer DeWanna Bonner and rising star Aliyah Boston, make their presence felt early. Advertisement That is, before a second-quarter technical foul reshaped the momentum. Late in the first half of that Tuesday night tilt, Washington's Jade Melbourne drew a foul on Bonner. Frustrated by the call, Bonner bounced the ball forcefully and was assessed a technical foul by the crew. On the very next possession, Boston picked up her third foul, forcing her to the bench with just under three minutes left in the quarter. Despite this, the Fever carried a 38-34 lead into halftime. A former No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 draft, Bonner won two championships with the Phoenix Mercury in 2009 and 2014 and is widely regarded as one of the WNBA's all-time greats. Advertisement Over a 15-year career that included stops in Russia, Spain and the Czech Republic, Bonner has been a six-time WNBA All-Star, a three-time Sixth Woman of the Year award winner and a two-time All-WNBA honoree. In February 2025, she signed a one-year contract with Indiana, making her Fever debut on May 17. The 6-foot-5 center-forward won WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2023 and led the league in field goal percentage (57.8%) that same year, a first for a rookie. Advertisement In 2024, Boston was named to the All-Star team for the second consecutive year. Through the first six games of 2025, Boston is averaging career-highs of 16.8 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting an astonishing 65.2% from the floor. Struggling WNBA Team Dealt Troubling News on Sunday
Struggling WNBA Team Dealt Troubling News on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Not even a second-quarter explosion from Kate Martin saved the Golden State Valkyries from another tough loss on Sunday. Advertisement Martin went off in the second period, scoring 11 points in just five minutes to give the Valkyries a one-point lead against the Minnesota Lynx heading into the halftime break. Napheesa Collier and the Lynx quickly erased the deficit, though, as they outscored Golden State in the third quarter, 17-8. Minnesota did not look back from that point, securing an 86-75 win to mark their seventh win in seven games played this season. The Valkyries, on the other hand, fell to 2-4 with the loss as they continue to struggle in their inaugural campaign. Golden State Valkyries guard Tiffany Hayes (15) speaks to teammates after their game against the Los Angeles Yamashita-Imagn Images To make matters worse, Golden State lost one of its key players in the fourth quarter after reigning WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year Tiffany Hayes took a shot to the face and was forced to exit the game. Advertisement The Valkyries immediately announced that the 35-year-old veteran would not be able to return to the game. What makes this even more concerning is the fact that Hayes just returned from a three-game absence. Sunday was her first game back after sitting out the last three contests due to a nose injury. It is currently unclear if she hurt her nose again on Sunday. Should Hayes miss time again, the Valkyries could lean on Martin to play more minutes in the interim. The former Iowa star had her best game in a Golden State uniform on Sunday, so this could potentially ignite a run for Martin at a time when the Valkyries need as much firepower as they can get. Caitlin Clark's New Teammate Emerges as 'Mama Bear' for Fever
After a 20-20 finish and a first-round playoff exit in 2024, the Indiana Fever were busy this offseason, making several key moves to strengthen their roster. The goal was to give Caitlin Clark, who led the team in both scoring (19.2 PPG) and assists (8.4 APG) in her rookie year, more help outside of Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. They added Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham, Brianna Turner, DeWanna Bonner and more. Advertisement Clark now enters Year 2 in the WNBA, and with a little more experience under her belt, she has taken on more of a leadership role. However, her resume doesn't yet compare to players like Howard and Bonner, who bring years of experience and championship pedigree to the locker room. Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark reacts after a J. Rebilas-Imagn Images After practice on Monday, new Fever head coach Stephanie White spoke to the media and discussed what Bonner brings to the team. White admitted that having the 37-year-old's "mama bear personality" in Indiana is "so important" for the rest of the squad. "DB is vocal," White said. "She might not say it in front of the masses, but she certainly is going to bring the team together and bring players off to the side and talk to them about what it takes, about the little things. She's experienced a lot of different things, whether it's been teammates, playing with some of the best in the world, franchises, coaches, all of those things. And so just having her wisdom, having her knowledge, and having her mama bear personality. I mean, it's so important because she understands how to hold you accountable, but she understands how to love on you, too." Clark also spoke about what Bonner means to the Fever, calling her "selfless leader." Advertisement "She's such a selfless leader," Clark said. "Like, she's here to win. She says that, but she, like, really means it. And she leads in that example every single day." Bonner joins the Fever after 15 seasons in the WNBA—10 with the Phoenix Mercury and the last five with the Connecticut Sun. The 6-foot-4 forward is a two-time WNBA champion (2009, 2014), a six-time All-Star, three-time Sixth Woman of the Year, and a two-time All-WNBA selection. She averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game last season. Last season with Dallas, she averaged 17.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Both Bonner and Howard bring championship pedigrees and defensive prowess to a Fever roster that finished 20-20 in 2024 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2016. Chicago Sky legends Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley welcome their first child
The Chicago Sky family has a new addition: Jana Christine Vandersloot Quigley, the daughter of captain Courtney Vandersloot and longtime star Allie Quigley. The couple welcomed their first daughter on April 8, according to People magazine. Jana is named for Vandersloot's mother, Jan, who died last June after a two-year battle with cancer. Quigley and Vandersloot first met as players on a flight back from Slovakia after facing off in their EuroLeague season championships. The pair immediately connected when Quigley was signed as a training camp player in 2013. They began dating shortly after, then married in December 2018. Few pairings have defined a sport in Chicago like Vandersloot and Quigley. A product of Joliet, Quigley is a member of the DePaul Hall of Fame after leading the Blue Demons to the NCAA tournament during four years with her hometown program, including a Sweet 16 berth in 2006. For 10 years, the pair elevated the Sky to the highest levels of the WNBA, finally winning the franchise's first title in 2021. Vandersloot broke the WNBA record for single-game assists in 2020. A two-time Sixth Woman of the Year, Quigley holds the record across both the WNBA and NBA as the four-time winner of the 3-point contest. The couple's trophy cabinet also holds a combined eight All-Star selections. 'The work takes time and it's not always perfect,' Vandersloot told the Tribune in 2022. 'We talk about this thing that we built, but it's not what other people see from the outside. They don't see everything that it takes to keep it this way. It's not like once you're there, once it gets built, now we can just admire it. No, it takes work. It takes sacrifice.' The Chicago Sky family just got a whole lot bigger. Congrats to Courtney and Allie (and Gemini)! — Julia Poe (@ 2025-05-11T17:26:04.467ZEven after their departure in 2023 — Vandersloot went to the New York Liberty, Quigley stepped away from basketball — the 'VanderQuigs' never went far. And after winning a second championship with the Liberty last season, Vandersloot returned home this year to sign a one-year deal with the Sky. Throughout training camp with the Sky, Vandersloot has embraced the combination of familiarity and newness in her return to Chicago. 'It feels like I never left,' Vandersloot said. 'It's such a weird feeling. It is so different and new, but it's also so familiar. The Chicago Sky — the uniform, the ownership, the fans, everybody — is the same. But then we have this whole new team and staff. I think that the right people are here. It feels like this is the right place.' After returning home, the next step for Vandersloot and Quigley will be guiding a new era of Sky basketball while starting a new chapter for their family.
