Caitlin Clark's New Teammate Emerges as 'Mama Bear' for Fever

Yahoo14-05-2025

After a 20-20 finish and a first-round playoff exit in 2024, the Indiana Fever were busy this offseason, making several key moves to strengthen their roster. The goal was to give Caitlin Clark, who led the team in both scoring (19.2 PPG) and assists (8.4 APG) in her rookie year, more help outside of Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell.
They added Natasha Howard, Sophie Cunningham, Brianna Turner, DeWanna Bonner and more.

Clark now enters Year 2 in the WNBA, and with a little more experience under her belt, she has taken on more of a leadership role. However, her resume doesn't yet compare to players like Howard and Bonner, who bring years of experience and championship pedigree to the locker room.

After practice on Monday, new Fever head coach Stephanie White spoke to the media and discussed what Bonner brings to the team. White admitted that having the 37-year-old's "mama bear personality" in Indiana is "so important" for the rest of the squad.
"DB is vocal," White said. "She might not say it in front of the masses, but she certainly is going to bring the team together and bring players off to the side and talk to them about what it takes, about the little things. She's experienced a lot of different things, whether it's been teammates, playing with some of the best in the world, franchises, coaches, all of those things. And so just having her wisdom, having her knowledge, and having her mama bear personality. I mean, it's so important because she understands how to hold you accountable, but she understands how to love on you, too."
Clark also spoke about what Bonner means to the Fever, calling her "selfless leader."

"She's such a selfless leader," Clark said. "Like, she's here to win. She says that, but she, like, really means it. And she leads in that example every single day."
Bonner joins the Fever after 15 seasons in the WNBA—10 with the Phoenix Mercury and the last five with the Connecticut Sun. The 6-foot-4 forward is a two-time WNBA champion (2009, 2014), a six-time All-Star, three-time Sixth Woman of the Year, and a two-time All-WNBA selection.
She averaged 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game last season.

WNBA Team Takes Shot at Wings After Win

WNBA Team Takes Shot at Wings After Win originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Mercury protected their home court against the Dallas Wings on Wednesday and secured a 93-80 win. They earned their seventh win of the 2025 WNBA season. It is their third win of the Commissioner's Cup and handed the Wings' 10th loss of the year. Advertisement All-Star forward Satou Sabally had an incredible performance against her former team. She led the Mercury with 20 points, nine rebounds and two assists on 46.7% shooting from the field. It was her first time playing against Dallas after she was part of the four-team deal in February. Following the contest, the Mercury's social media post seemed like a shot at the Wings. Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas gets by Dallas Wings guard Paige Chow/The Republic / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images On X, Phoenix celebrated their win but couldn't help to throw shade at Dallas. "Can't spell Dallas without an L," the franchise posted. Phoenix outplayed Dallas in every quarter. They also forced the Wings to commit more turnovers, 15 in total. However, another major factor in the Mercury's win was their bench play. The bench unit scored 34 points, with Kitija Laksa scoring the most with 14. Advertisement The Wings' rookie, Paige Bueckers, had an incredible first game against the Mercury. She had 35 points, six rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. The youngster spent 37:17 minutes of action and was highly efficient from the field. The college champion shot 68.4% from the field, including a 71.4% shooting from deep. The next time the two teams will play against each other will be on July 3, which will be a two-game, back-to-back outing for both teams. Their third matchup will be on July 7. The Mercury will face the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday to conclude the Commissioner's Cup. Paige Bueckers' Response After Dallas Wings' Sixth Straight Loss

Paige Bueckers' Response After Dallas Wings' Sixth Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After missing four games while in concussion protocol followed by an illness, Paige Bueckers returned to action for the Dallas Wings on Wednesday. Advertisement She had her best game yet as a pro by exploding for 35 points on 13-of-19 shooting from the field and hitting five of her seven 3-point attempts while adding six rebounds, four assists, one steal and one block. But the rookie couldn't prevent the Wings from losing to the Phoenix Mercury, 93-80. They now have a putrid 1-10 record, which is the worst mark in the WNBA. Bueckers was used to winning in college at UConn, and she talked about how she is dealing with losses in bunches as a pro. "It's challenging but very rewarding in a sense of you being super process-oriented and not result-oriented," she said. "How we want to have a set of standards, build a culture and have a way we do things and stick to that regardless of wins or losses... Then the results will follow and will come as we continue to stay disciplined in who we are every single day. "Just trying to lead by example, lead with my voice and just have difficult conversations. Get to know these people on and off the court and continue to build that chemistry... Just like anything in life, it's a journey." When Bueckers was at UConn, the school always reached at least the Sweet Sixteen round of the women's NCAA Tournament. In fact, during that time, the only instance in which the Huskies didn't get to the Final Four was when she missed all of the 2022-23 season with an injury. Advertisement Just a couple of months ago, they won it all by blasting South Carolina in the title game. For her college career, she averaged 19.8 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists a game while shooting 53.1% from the field and 42.3% from downtown. It has won just one playoff series since 2009, when it was known as the Shock and moved from Detroit to Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the meantime, look for Bueckers to continue to show patience as she develops her game and looks to become the WNBA's next superstar. Caitlin Clark's Effect on Pacers Amid NBA Finals is Turning Heads

Caitlin Clark's Effect on Pacers Amid NBA Finals is Turning Heads originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Indiana Pacers continue to defy their doubters, as they took Game 3 of the NBA Finals by a final score of 116-107 over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Advertisement The Thunder were heavily favored to win the world championship coming into this series, but the Pacers now lead the series 2-1. The Hoosier State is stoked about the very real possibility of the Larry O'Brien Trophy landing there for the first time ever. This is the Pacers' second trip to the NBA Finals and their first since 2000, and fans can almost start to taste the champagne. Indiana Fever stars Caitlin Clark and Aliyah BostonKyle Terada-Imagn Images One of their biggest fans is Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. She was on hand at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Wednesday for Game 3 along with several of her teammates, and she may be a good luck charm for the Pacers. When she has been in attendance this season, the Pacers have been 8-0. Fans on X reacted to this interesting statistic. Advertisement "That's a cool stat," one fan wrote. "She needs to attend 2 more games," another fan chimed in. "Or maybe it's the spirit of Jim Ursay," a third fan wrote, referring to former Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay, who died a few weeks ago. "CC Effect," a fourth user wrote. "The @NBA saw what the @NFL did with @taylorswift13 and said, 'Hey we can do that with @CaitlinClark22!!' 😂😂😂 #conspiracytheory" a fifth user mused. "Thank you @CaitlinClark22," another fan added. During the regular season, the Pacers finished with the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference. Many were counting them out as the playoffs started, even though they reached the Eastern Conference finals last year. Advertisement But they knocked out the Cleveland Cavaliers, who finished first with 64 wins, in the second round, and they shoved past the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference finals. Throughout this postseason, they have gotten the job done not only with their potent fast break but also by overcoming late deficits and getting some late-game heroics from Tyrese Haliburton. The Pacers can put a stranglehold on this championship series when Game 4 takes place at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Friday.
