Bundle Award swoops home late to post first Group win

HONG KONG - The progressive four-year-old Bundle Award might have earned a start at Group 1 level, after displaying an impressive talent to win the HK$4.2 million (S$700,000) Group 3 Queen Mother Memorial Cup Handicap (2,400m) at Sha Tin on May 4. Triumphant at 1,400m and 1,800m at Sha Tin this year, the John Size-trained Bundle Award handled the rise to 2,400m with aplomb to defeat Noisy Boy (Jerry Chau) by a short head in 2min 29.72sec. Winning Dragon (Alexis Badel) was third another ¾ length away. While the winning margin was slender, there was a sense of inevitability about the outcome when the Bundle Award ($9) fanned to the outside of the six-horse field at the home turn under Zac Purton. The Shamus Award gelding accelerated from the tail of the field to power to the line in 21.67sec over the final 400m, as Noisy Boy resisted bravely and Winning Dragon also refused to yield. Bundle Award's performance leaves master trainer Size with the potential option of starting the gelding - the winner of three races in Australia, where he raced as Prince Prawn - in the Group 1 Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup (2,400m) at Sha Tin on May 31. "We'll see how he is. He's not rated up to that (Standard Chartered Champions & Chater Cup) at the moment, but let's have a look and see what's available for him," Size said of the 86-rater. "He's been really good for us and he's performed admirably today. It was a big job for him to go to another distance and still win. "It was hard to predict how they would run the race, but it probably was going to be a slow-run affair. "But, a long way from home, he looked like he might be able to win the race. It was just a matter of whether he was in the frame of mind to go on with it. "He's physically fine. I think he's just got to learn a little bit more about racing and a little bit more about how to win a race." Size last won the Queen Mother Memorial Cup with Dr Well in 2006, while Purton added to his wins in the race on Dominant (2013) and Exultant (2018) after his left foot was dislodged from the stirrup when the gates opened. "He came out sideways and banged the gate. It's my sore foot, so it's in a bit of pain," he said. "They went really slow, which was always going to play into my hands because he's got the best turn of foot of any horse in the race. "It became a sprint home. He had it won a fair way out but he just didn't know how to put them away. He did a good job." Bundle Award, who finished seventh to Cap Ferrat in the BMW Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) on March 23, is the first horse out of this season's Classic to win a Group race. Size also combined with Purton for a double after Crossborderpegasus ($7) made it three wins from four starts in the Class 3 Gascoigne Handicap (1,200m). Tony Cruz swept to another towering milestone with a double at Sha Tin, taking his combined career haul as a trainer and jockey in Hong Kong to 2,500 wins. The six-time champion jockey rode 946 winners. His successes on May 4 with Liveandletlive ($48) - who earned a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million by winning the Class 3 Chatham Handicap (2,000m) under Angus Chung - and Winning Ovation ($33), who also snared a PP Bonus of HK$1.5 million under Badel in the Class 3 Austin Handicap (1,400m), took his tally as a trainer to 1,554. "I'm very happy with that. It's great," said the two-time Hong Kong champion trainer. HKJC

Unbeaten Crossborderpegasus highlights John Size's treble as he extends championship lead

Untapped three-year-old headlines master trainer's three-timer at Sha Tin on Saturday, adding to his premiership advantage over David Hayes A pair of progressive three-year-olds and a perennial placegetter helped deliver John Size a treble as the master trainer extended his championship lead again at Sha Tin on Saturday. Continuing his onslaught after bouncing back from a slow start to the season, Size moved to 42 wins – four clear of nearest rival David Hayes – after Crossborderpegasus, Lifeline Express and Juneau Pride saluted. Crossborderpegasus became the first leg of Size's three-timer when he maintained his unbeaten record at start two in the Class Four Azalea Handicap (1,200m) under Hugh Bowman. Sent off the $1.3 favourite after an impressive debut win last month, the Rich Enuff three-year-old again showed his inexperience when laying in over the concluding stages but he still proved half a length too slick for Lucky Symphony. Crossborderpegasus remains unbeaten! 👌@HugeBowman guides John Size's Rich Enuff speedster to a second straight win at Sha Tin... #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 15, 2025 'He's going well. He's certainly got a bit of ability and it's just a matter of developing that,' said 12-time champion trainer Size. 'If he can improve on that, it will be promising for his future.' Lifeline Express snapped a streak of six placings – including four seconds – since his last victory when he broke through in the Class Three Angelonia Handicap (1,200m). Ridden by Andrea Atzeni, the Shooting To Win gelding stormed home from the second half of the field to comfortably beat Geneva by a length and three-quarters, justifying $3 favouritism. Three-year-old Juneau Pride capped Size's treble when he made it back-to-back triumphs in the Class Three Cosmos Handicap (1,400m). 'I don't know how far he'll go but everything he does is workmanlike and he's been a very honest horse, right from the first day,' Size said. Despite rising eight pounds on his last-start win, Juneau Pride took advantage of a soft run in midfield from gate two and ran on solidly between runners in the straight. The Pride Of Dubai gelding accounted for Eighty Light Years by three-quarters of a length as the $1.75 first elect. John Size extends his championship lead! 🔥 The Australian Racing Hall of Famer scoops a treble as Juneau Pride impresses once again... @brentonavdulla #LoveRacing | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 15, 2025 He boasts a strong record of three wins and four placings from seven starts and capped a Saturday double for in-form jockey Brenton Avdulla. The Australian rider was also successful aboard Pierre Ng Pang-chi's Soaring Bronco in the Class Five Dahlia Handicap (1,600m). Elsewhere on Saturday's card, Hayes bagged his 38th victory of the season when World Hero made all in the Class Five Snapdragon Handicap (1,200m) under Luke Ferraris. 'He's only three, so I'd expect him to have his better seasons next year and the year after,' Hayes said after World Hero scored his maiden win at start 10. 'It just seems like he's been here a long time as he came here as a two-year-old. Physically he'll get better as he matures. I've always thought he's a 1,400m [horse] and a miler.'

John Size moves two clear in trainers' championship after Happy Valley double

Trainer John Size (second from right), jockey Alexis Badel and connections celebrate Beauty Alliance's win. Photos: Kenneth Chan Master handler extends title lead over David Hayes after Beauty Infinity and Beauty Alliance strike at city circuit John Size fired in a late double at Happy Valley on Wednesday night to put a small but significant gap on David Hayes in the race for this season's trainers' championship. After Beauty Infinity and Beauty Alliance won the final two races on the Valley card, Size moved to 39 wins this term – two clear of Hayes. The Australians have traded blows in recent weeks, but Size holds a more clear advantage for the first time after continuing his stunning revival from a slow start to the campaign. 'It was lovely, very good,' Size said of the double. Beauty Alliance smashes them! 🤯 Big win from John Size's charge in the finale at Happy Valley to give his trainer and @AlexisBadel a double each on tonight's programme... @Beautystablehk #HappyWednesday | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) March 12, 2025 'Both horses did the job they were expected to, so that's all we can hope for. We've had a good run the past couple of months and made up ground quickly, so we've enjoyed that and now we have to keep winning races to try and maintain our position.' Beauty Alliance was the most impressive of Size's two winners, bolting in by three and a half lengths in the Class Three Ap Lei Chau Handicap (1,800m) under Alexis Badel. Sent forward from gate nine to track the speed, the Starcraft four-year-old surged clear in the straight to comfortably account for Fallon and Northern Beast. Beauty Alliance holds an entry for next week's HK$26 million BMW Hong Kong Derby (2,000m) and his two consecutive wins might just put him in the frame for a start in the coveted feature, despite his lowly rating of 65 before Wednesday night. The Derby field will be announced on Friday and another hopeful racing on Wednesday night, Talents Ambition, won't make it after finishing a distant last behind Beauty Alliance. The Newnham-trained gelding boasts a rating of 80 but his best form is on the dirt. Elsewhere at the Valley meeting, Badel, Andrea Atzeni and Cody Mo Wai-kit joined Size with doubles. Badel also booted home the Newnham-trained Tactical Command in the third section of the Class Four Peng Chau Handicap (1,200m), while Atzeni made a successful return from a two-meeting suspension. Atzeni started the night with victory on Mo's Crystal Powerful in the Class Five Waglan Island Handicap (1,000m) before sealing a brace on Dennis Yip Chor-hong's Great Spirit in the second section of the Peng Chau Handicap. Mo clinched his double when Happy Fat Cat delivered Antoine Hamelin a drought-breaking success in the Class Three Cheung Chau Handicap (1,200m). Facing a winless streak of 62 rides dating back to December, Hamelin was ecstatic to boot home his third winner in what has been a tough campaign for the Frenchman. 'I love this horse and I love the owner. They have supported me a lot and that's what we need,' Hamelin said. 'The horse has a big heart and I always do very well with him – I'm very happy to get the winner for everyone.' Tracking the tearaway leader Youthful Spirits in running, Happy Fat Cat shot to the lead passing the 150m and held on late to beat the raging $1.8 favourite King Of Fighters by a neck. It was the son of Shalaa's first success this season after finishing in the first five on his previous four starts – all with Hamelin aboard. Hamelin won on Happy Fat Cat in 2023 when the gelding was trained by Pierre Ng Pang-chi. The speedster won four races – all over 1,200m at the Valley – last season when transferred to Mo. Trainer Douglas Whyte was thrilled to land an overdue win with Find My Love after he ran on strongly to claim the first section of the Peng Chau Handicap under Hugh Bowman. It was the son of Frankel's third Hong Kong success and first since June 2023. 'He's been a bit frustrating,' Whyte said. 'He needs a fast-run race. In my opinion, he's good over 1,400m and a mile, but the pace doesn't suit him. 'I ran him here once over 1,200m and he got held up. When he dropped in class and with the pace of Happy Valley, he just needed a draw and thankfully he got the draw [barrier two] and Hugh gave him a great ride.'

Trainers' championship battle between John Size and David Hayes heats up

Australian handlers threaten to separate from the pack in pursuit of premiership glory this season A tense battle for championship glory is developing at the top of the trainers' table, with John Size and David Hayes threatening to separate themselves from the pack this term. No strangers to premiership success, the Australians are tied on 36 wins with 12-time champion Size holding the ascendancy with four more seconds than dual champion Hayes. While Size eyeing a record-extending 13th title is no surprise, the manner in which he has surged into contention has been quite remarkable. The 70-year-old is generally a slow starter, with his gallopers improving with a run or two under their belts, but he was battling in the lower half of the standings with just five wins from the opening three months of the campaign. He has since been on a relentless hot streak, soaring to the title lead after a Sha Tin four-timer on February 23 before trading blows with Hayes in the past three weeks. Hayes has been a more constant presence at the top of this season's standings, with the world's best sprinter, Ka Ying Rising, leading the 62-year-old's charge. Last season's pulsating premiership finale between Francis Lui Kin-wai and Pierre Ng Pang-chi, in which the former won four of the final five races to eclipse his former protégé by a solitary victory, will be hard to beat in terms of a blockbuster finish. However, the race between Size and Hayes is shaping up as a mouth-watering one after 51 of the 88 meetings. As for Sha Tin this Sunday, the handlers don't have their strongest teams engaged but Size could add to his premiership lead. Outstanding last-start winner Brilliant Express, Bundle Award and Sweet Smile will have solid claims for the stable. Hayes will rely on a pair of impressive triallers, Top Throne and Akashvani, overcoming wide draws on their race debuts, while Stellar Swift could be an improver dropping back to Class Four company.
