Former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes turns in another great outing for Pittsburgh Pirates
Former LSU pitcher Paul Skenes made history in his most recent start for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, the right-hander picked up the win with six scoreless innings. Skenes is the only player since 1901 to have over 300 strikeouts and a sub-2.00 ERA through 44 career MLB games. He struck out six batters and allowed three hits in the quality start. The Pirates scored all three of their runs in the second inning, giving Skenes the run support he needed to pitch confidently through the next four frames. Three relievers combined to hold off the Tigers to seal the win. The appearance is Skenes' first since making a second consecutive start for the National League in the MLB All-Star game. In his second year as a professional, he's hanging among the league's best pitchers. Skenes' 1.91 ERA and 0.91 WHIP rank first and second, respectively, in the National League. Through 127 innings in 2025, he has 137 strikeouts.

Former LSU star Paul Skenes named starting pitcher for National League in All-Star game
The National League named former LSU baseball star Paul Skenes its starting pitcher for the 2025 All-Star Game. It is Skenes' second time earning the distinction. The Pittsburgh Pirates' right-hander started last year's All-Star game ahead of winning the National League's Rookie of the Year award. Skenes is currently the betting favorite for the National League's Cy Young award, given to the best pitcher. In his second year of professional baseball, the ex-LSU hurler is putting together a standout season. Skenes' 2.01 ERA leads the National League. He has 131 strikeouts and a 0.93 WHIP through 121 innings pitched, all of which are top five in the National League. Through 20 starts in 2025, Skenes has surrendered over three runs just twice. In his most recent outing, he eclipsed his 300th career strikeout. It took him just 43 starts to reach the milestone, making him the first Pirates pitcher and one of 17 MLB pitchers all-time to do so. Skenes takes the mound for the All-Star game in Atlanta, GA, on Tuesday at 7 PM CT.

Fine Dining Chef Josh Skenes Opens a Spicy Fried Chicken Restaurant in Arts District
One of the world's most acclaimed chefs is getting into the fried chicken business. Joshua Skenes, the founding chef of Saison and Angler in San Francisco (and part of Angler LA at opening), is opening a fast-casual restaurant on June 6 called Happies Hand Made in the Arts District in the space adjacent to Tatsu Ramen. Skenes, who opened Leopardo in mid-2024 and temporarily closed it in early 2025 to work on Happies, is serving thick, spicy, Sichuan-inflected fried chicken tenders with fruit and tea drinks; heavily seasoned beef tallow fries; soft serve topped with passionfruit and strawberry; and frozen cocktails. The tenders will be served atop crispy waffles, milk bread slices, or a pile of dressed salad greens. The surprise debut comes after months of speculation about the fate of Leopardo, Skenes' Italian American pizza and seafood restaurant that opened in 2024 along La Brea Avenue. Leopardo had garnered some local and national recognition for its pizza and was included in the California Michelin Guide. The restaurant quietly closed in early 2025 and has yet to set a reopening date, but promises a renovated interior design. Prior to Leopardo, Skenes founded Saison, which reached three Michelin stars (it's currently at two after his departure), and Angler, which still has a single Michelin star. Angler in Los Angeles operated at the Beverly Center from 2019 to 2023. His only previous foray into casual dining was with Fat Noodle, a venture with Umami Burger founder Adam Fleischman that never fully opened. In the meantime, Skenes' Happies Hand Made restaurant opens its doors today at noon with limited hours of operation from Friday to Sunday. The fried chicken tenders are possibly the biggest in the city, encrusted with a crispy Southern-style exterior and dressed with a mildly spicy Sichuan-style chile sauce. A gentle smokiness comes through with each bite, which distinguishes these tenders from other versions around town. Craggly fries are coated in black pepper and heavy seasoning, resembling Chinese and Korean snacks, and they're fried in beef tallow for good measure. Skenes has always excelled in soft serve ice cream, with compelling renditions at Angler and Leopardo. Here, soft serve swirls are topped with strawberry sauce, passionfruit, or whole honeycomb. Prices are fairly reasonable, with fried tender combos at $26 for two tenders, a choice of crispy 'liquid' waffle, milk bread, or salad, and a housemade soda. Fries are $5, and soft serve is $8. To round out the menu, Skenes has a huge array of beverages, like fruit sodas; lemon mint, honey oolong, and hojicha tea, cold brew coffee with a whole doughnut on top; boozy slushies flavored with coconut or kyoho grape; and a few other fruity cocktails. The wood-lined space conjures a retro diner, with a slatted divider barely separating the rest of the high-ceiling industrial space from the next-door Tatsu Ramen. Still, a few wall counter stools and plush booth seating make for decent on-premise dining. The restaurant is currently dine-in only, with take-out and delivery forthcoming. Happies Hand Made is open Friday to Sunday, 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and is located at 427 S. Hewitt Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90013. Sign up for our newsletter.

Paul Skenes pitches like a Cy Young contender while Pirates waste another gem
The Pittsburgh Pirates rolled to an easy win against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday with a commanding lead. The win was powered by National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now His excellent pitching carried the game, helping to quell the Arizona Diamondback offense in a win for the Pirates. Skenes' dominance on the rubber has placed him among baseball's elite young arms on the year. Paul Skenes shines on mound with a historic performance Paul Skenes' performance on Wednesday was nothing less than phenomenal. The young ace threw 6.2 innings of shutout ball, allowing just four hits and no walks while fanning 7 hitters. His control and accuracy were on display as he completely shut down the Arizona lineup. This trip was another gem in what has otherwise been a breakout campaign for Skenes. The 22-year-old continues to build his case as one of the league's premier young pitchers, and what he did on the road easily lived up to the bill. What makes Skenes' dominance that much more impressive is that he can also hold hits in check. He has since completed 35 career starts without surrendering more than six hits in a given contest, which is an MLB record. His ERA currently sits at an incredible 2.15 and his career ERA at a jaw-dropping 2.03. Skenes' 4-5 record this year, however, lies due to a complete absence of run support from his offense. But his ability to control the mound has been evident, and his potential is unquestioned. Also Read: A historic season for Paul Skenes Skenes' early career is already full of impressive markers. He has already become one of the greatest pitchers ever at his age. In fact, among pitchers who started at least 25 games as a 22-year-old, only Babe Ruth in 1917 and Sam McDowell in the 1960s have posted better ERAs than Skenes' 2.08. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The fact that Skenes is performing at this level in just his second season is a sign of his incredible talent and work ethic. With his ability to throw effectively to major league hitters, Skenes is only just starting to reach his full potential. Although Skenes' consistent pitching hasn't led to more wins than losses so far to the Pirates' name this season, it has provided some very valuable arm power. He's been the silver lining for what has otherwise been a miserable season in Pittsburgh. The Pirates are 21-36 overall, last in the National League Central, but they have pitchers like Skenes, who are making the team's future bright. Ahead, the Pirates will seek to follow up on this win when they face the San Diego Padres. The Pirates are to start Mitch Keller in the second game of the series Friday night. The Pirates will look to build on this as they try to climb out of the bottom half of the standings in the division.
