Skibbereen Rowing Club honoured for their excellence in Irish and international rowing
Corkman Today at 10:48 Skibbereen Rowing Club were honoured recently for their excellence in Irish and international rowing. Skibbereen Rowing Club were afforded a special civic reception by the Mayor of the County of Cork at County Hall on Monday, May 12. Skibbereen Rowing Club which is located on the banks of the Ilen River was founded in 1970. The rowing club which is the most successful rowing club in Ireland has produced numerous world class athletes and they were honoured for their outstanding achievements which includes ten Olympians since 2000. A civic reception is the highest honour the Mayor of the County can give to a group or individual. It was bestowed upon Olympic medal winners Paul O'Donovan, Gary O'Donovan, Fintan McCarthy and Emily Hegarty and their fellow Olympians Eugene Coakley, Timmy Harnedy, Richard Coakley, Aoife Casey, Lydia Heaphy, Jake McCarthy and their head coach Dominic Casey. Mayor Carroll said Skibbereen Rowing Club is a beacon of excellence in Irish and international rowing. 'It is with immense pride and joy that we celebrate the outstanding achievements of our local heroes, athletes who have not only excelled on the national stage but have also brought international acclaim to Skibbereen and County Cork. 'Skibbereen Rowing Club has firmly established itself as the most successful rowing club in the country. On behalf of the people of County Cork I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the athletes and their coaches. In particular, head coach Dominic Casey, their families, and supporters who have been part of this wonderful journey,' he added. Chief Executive of Cork County Council Moira Murrell said: 'We are proud to celebrate the success of our athletes, Skibbereen Rowing Club, and everyone in the community who supports them. These rowers inspire young people to believe in themselves and follow their dreams.'

Paul O'Donovan absent as Rowing Ireland announces team for European Championships
PAUL O'DONOVAN is a notable absentee as Rowing Ireland announced their senior crews for the 2025 European Rowing Championships today. On the reason for Ireland's most successful ever Olympian not being included, CEO Michelle Carpenter said: 'Paul is currently balancing a number of significant commitments as he pursues his medical career progression. His participation depends on his availability, and we will continue to support him as he manages both his professional and sporting endeavours, as we do with all athletes.' The 31-year-old's unavailability means Fintan McCarthy — with whom O'Donovan won gold medals in the men's lightweight double sculls at the last two Olympic Games — teams up with Konan Pazzaia of Queen's University Belfast Boat Club in the men's double sculls. Meanwhile, Daire Lynch and Philip Doyle, who won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in the men's double sculls, have been included but will compete in separate events. Lynch links up with Ross Corrigan in the men's pair, while Doyle will compete alongside Ronan Byrne, Adam Murphy and Andrew Sheehan in the men's quadruple sculls. The event, which takes place from 29 May to 1 June in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, marks the beginning of the new Olympic cycle. Paul O'Donovan misses out as Ireland name squad for European Rowing Championship
Paul O'Donovan will miss the upcoming 2025 European Rowing Championships in order to concentrate on his medical studies. Ireland's journey to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles begins from May 29 to June 1 when their Senior Crews head to Plovdiv, Bulgaria for the Euro Championship. Included in the squad named on Tuesday afternoon are Paris Olympic medallists Daire Lynch, Philip Doyle and Fintan McCarthy. Lynch and Doyle won bronze in the men's double sculls at the 2024 Games but this time around Lynch will pair up with Ross Corrigan, while Doyle will be going into the men's quadruple sculls alongside Ronan Byrne, Adam Murphy, and Andrew Sheehan. McCarthy won the lightweight double sculls gold alongside O'Donovan last summer but on this occassion he will be joined in the boat by Konan Pazzaia, as his fellow Skibbereen Rowing Clubman focusses on exams. 'This marks the beginning of an exciting new cycle as we build towards Los Angeles 2028," said Dominic Casey, High Performance Lead Coach. "Our athletes returned refreshed and re-energised after a well-deserved break following the Paris campaign. Many are now balancing elite training with academic and professional commitments, which speaks to their dedication both on and off the water. "We're focused on laying strong foundations for the years ahead and supporting this group as they continue to grow, develop, and thrive in high performance rowing.' Rowing Ireland added: "We wish all our athletes and support staff the very best as they gear up for an exciting weekend of racing in Plovdiv." Paris heroes head for European Championships as journey to LA 2028 begins
Paris Games medallists Daire Lynch, Philip Doyle and Fintan McCarthy will all compete at the upcoming European Rowing Championships in Bulgaria as Ireland's journey towards the 2028 LA Olympics begins in earnest. Lynch and Doyle won Olympic bronze in the men's double sculls last summer. They won't compete together in Plovdiv however; Lynch pairs up with Ross Corrigan, with Doyle instead going in the men's quadruple sculls alongside Ronan Byrne, Adam Murphy, and Andrew Sheehan. McCarthy claimed a memorable lightweight double sculls gold in Paris alongside Paul O'Donovan. This time he'll team up with Swiss-born Konan Pazzaia who joined Rowing Ireland's high-performance pathway in 2020 after moving to Queen's University Belfast to study biological sciences. The European Championships take place from 29 May to 1 June. "This marks the beginning of an exciting new cycle as we build towards Los Angeles 2028," said high performance lead coach Dominic Casey. "Our athletes returned refreshed and re-energised after a well-deserved break following the Paris campaign.
