Need a job? Set a course for Hampton Roads
PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — In Hampton Roads, home of the world's largest naval base, an all-hands effort is underway to fill some 11,000 positions in the maritime industry, with Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover saying the line for jobs starts here.

'The problem we don't have in Portsmouth is the workforce,' Glover said. 'Part of our challenge is getting those individuals trained and with the credentials so that they can get these good jobs.'
is the nation's oldest, and located in Portsmouth. But, said Glover, don't feel confused about opportunities to serve your country while serving your family's needs.
'If they come onto our Portsmouth at Work program, we can set them up with training, and if you are a resident of Portsmouth, we provide funding for a lot of the training that you will receive to earn those certificates that will enable you to get those good-paying jobs,' Glover said.
At the Portsmouth-based Skilled Trades Program Center for Workforce Solutions, young people are learning the skills needed to build and repair the nation's warships.

And, says Glover, this is why good jobs matter.
'It provides stability, it gives you hope,' Glover said, 'but also gives you personal pride in knowing that you can do it, that you can make a difference in your own life and impact those people around you.'
