‘No luck even after a SkillsFuture course' — Woman asks for help after two years of unemployment

SINGAPORE: A woman who has been unemployed for over two years took to Reddit to seek advice on restarting her career. Posting on the r/askSingapore subreddit on Tuesday (May 27), she wrote, 'I have been unemployed for more than two years. My previous jobs were mainly in administration. I have a degree in sociology. And I have not been working due to personal reasons, which I prefer not to disclose.' She also mentioned that although she has been actively trying to get back on her feet, such as sending out numerous job applications and taking up a digital marketing course through SkillsFuture in late 2023, none of them have panned out. With her confidence waning and the job market remaining uncertain, she turned to the online community for support. 'What should I do now?' she asked. 'I heard the job market is really bad.' 'Take on any job that is available and don't be choosy…' Her post quickly drew responses from fellow Reddit users, many of whom related to her struggles. Some encouraged her to stay open to any kind of work, whether full-time or part-time, as a way to get back into the workforce, regain some confidence, and start building up her resume again. One user suggested, 'Just apply for jobs! The worst they can do is ghost you or say no. Keep an Excel sheet of where you applied and what you sent for your resume/CV. During interviews, when asked about your gap, share your digital marketing course and any other self-improvement things you did. There are always jobs, just whether it fits your expectations or not.' Another commented, 'The job market is usually bad, and I don't foresee it going better. Have to just try and apply. Upskill and apply; even internships are also good.' A third added, 'Take on any job that is available and don't be choosy. Approach employment agencies. They tend to have jobs of various natures but are in industrial estates. Some pay market rates. SkillsFuture courses are meant to complement or add to your existing skill sets to make you more competitive in the industry. They are not courses that you take and can straightaway enter that industry.' In other news, a troubled worker took to social media to share how his demanding job has pushed him to the brink, causing him to develop anxiety just from the thought of going to work. 'I started to develop anxiety even to go to work. It's almost like I don't even have time to breathe once I step into the office,' he wrote in a post on r/askSingapore. The worker shared that in recent months, several of his colleagues have quit, and with no new hires brought in to replace them, the remaining team has been forced to take on the extra workload. 315,000 Singaporeans have used new Career & Skills Passport by SSG

An online career and skills planning tool by SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) has been used by 315,000 Singaporeans as of April 30. Launched in November 2024, the Careers and Skills Passport consolidates information about an individual's careers and skills from government-verified sites in one centralised and secured location, before being shared with current and potential employers. The SSG said that this tool can be used to supplement resumes and enhance online job applications with the provision of verified records. Users can choose which records they wish to share with partnering online job portals, such as Jobstreet and FastJobs. They can also generate a sharable link of their profile and share them directly with potential employers. To date, 4,900 users have shared date from their Careers and Skills Passport. Developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), Ministry of Education (MOE), and Government Technology Agency, the passport has four key components. The employment section contains verified data from the Central Provident Fund Board and MOM, such as employer name, employment period and occupation. The skills section contains an overview of verified skills from the user's certifications and from employer validation. Users can also add skills that they acquired on their own. The third section contains academic records from the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board and Institutes of Higher Learning supported by the MOE. These include the Institute of Technical Education, polytechnics, autonomous universities, and the Arts Institutions. The final section contains verified professional training records, such as certifications from the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications and other SSG-funded courses. Similar to the skills section, users can also add their own certification records. The Careers and Skills Passport is one of the initiatives by SSG which marks its 10th anniversary in 2025, to encourage Singaporeans to upskill. Held at the Four Seasons Hotel, the anniversary event on May 23 was attended by the Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Mr Lawrence Wong, Minister for Education, Mr Chan Chun Sing, Minister for Manpower, Dr Tan See Leng, and Minister of State for Education and Manpower, Ms Gan Siow Huang. About 300 education, enterprise, union and industry partners were also in attendance. The event also featured a panel discussion with individual, employer, union and government representatives, about how the SkillsFuture movement provides opportunities to upskill and stay competitive. As part of the 10th anniversary, SSG and Workforce Singapore will roll out a series of initiatives throughout the year. These include the rollout of the SkillsFuture Jobseeker Support scheme which aims to provide temporary financial support up to $6,000 over six months, to lower and middle-income jobseekers who are still unemployed. The Centre for Skills-First Practices will also be launched by SSG and the Institute for Adult Learning in the fourth quarter. Over the years, SkillsFuture initiatives have expanded to cover over 28,000 courses, ranging from full qualifications to short courses, offered by a training sector that includes IHLs and private providers with close links to the industry. More than 500,000 Singaporeans, - a fifth of the workforce - are trained every year. Since its inception in 2015, employer participation in the SkillsFuture movement has also doubled from 12,000 companies to 24,000 in 2024. The number of employees supported by their employers for SSG supported training also increased from 160,000 in 2015 to 241,000 in 2024. Mr Tan Kok Yam, Chief Executive of SSG said that in the next 10 years, the SkillsFuture movement will have to "level up" its support to Singaporeans, and give workers the tools and the confidence to thrive in an increasingly unpredictable world. "Under SkillsFuture, we will encourage individuals to be mindful of their career health, raise quality and relevance of learning, and help employers hire by skills and invest in their people," he said.
