‘No luck even after a SkillsFuture course' — Woman asks for help after two years of unemployment

SINGAPORE: A woman who has been unemployed for over two years took to Reddit to seek advice on restarting her career.
Posting on the r/askSingapore subreddit on Tuesday (May 27), she wrote, 'I have been unemployed for more than two years. My previous jobs were mainly in administration. I have a degree in sociology. And I have not been working due to personal reasons, which I prefer not to disclose.'
She also mentioned that although she has been actively trying to get back on her feet, such as sending out numerous job applications and taking up a digital marketing course through SkillsFuture in late 2023, none of them have panned out.
With her confidence waning and the job market remaining uncertain, she turned to the online community for support. 'What should I do now?' she asked. 'I heard the job market is really bad.' 'Take on any job that is available and don't be choosy…'
Her post quickly drew responses from fellow Reddit users, many of whom related to her struggles. Some encouraged her to stay open to any kind of work, whether full-time or part-time, as a way to get back into the workforce, regain some confidence, and start building up her resume again.
One user suggested, 'Just apply for jobs! The worst they can do is ghost you or say no. Keep an Excel sheet of where you applied and what you sent for your resume/CV.
During interviews, when asked about your gap, share your digital marketing course and any other self-improvement things you did. There are always jobs, just whether it fits your expectations or not.'
Another commented, 'The job market is usually bad, and I don't foresee it going better. Have to just try and apply. Upskill and apply; even internships are also good.'
A third added, 'Take on any job that is available and don't be choosy. Approach employment agencies. They tend to have jobs of various natures but are in industrial estates. Some pay market rates. SkillsFuture courses are meant to complement or add to your existing skill sets to make you more competitive in the industry. They are not courses that you take and can straightaway enter that industry.'
In other news, a troubled worker took to social media to share how his demanding job has pushed him to the brink, causing him to develop anxiety just from the thought of going to work.
'I started to develop anxiety even to go to work. It's almost like I don't even have time to breathe once I step into the office,' he wrote in a post on r/askSingapore.
The worker shared that in recent months, several of his colleagues have quit, and with no new hires brought in to replace them, the remaining team has been forced to take on the extra workload.

AI-driven search ad spending set to surge to $26 billion by 2029, data shows

Spending on AI-powered search advertising is poised to surge to nearly $26 billion by 2029 from just over $1 billion this year in the U.S., driven by rapid adoption of the technology and more sophisticated user targeting, data from Emarketer showed on Wednesday. Companies that rely on traditional keyword-based search ads could experience revenue declines due to the growing popularity of AI search ads, which offer greater convenience and engagement for users, according to the research firm. WHY IT'S IMPORTANT Search giants such as Alphabet-owned Google and Microsoft's Bing have added AI capabilities to better compete with chatbots such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, which provide users with direct information without requiring to click through multiple results. Apple is exploring the integration of AI-driven search capabilities into its Safari browser, potentially moving away from its longstanding partnership with Google. The report has come as concerns grew about users increasingly turning to the chatbots for conversational search and AI-powered search results could upend business models of some companies. Online education firm Chegg said in May that it would lay off about 248 employees as it looks to cut costs and streamline operations because students are using AI-powered tools including ChatGPT over traditional edtech platforms. QUOTE "Publishers and other sites are feeling the pain from AI search. As they lose out on traffic, we're seeing publishers lean into subscriptions and paid AI licensing deals to bolster revenue," Emarketer analyst Minda Smiley said. GRAPHIC AI search ad spending is expected to constitute nearly 1 per cent of total search ad spending this year and 13.6 per cent by 2029 in the U.S., according to Emarketer. Sectors such as financial services, technology, telecom, and healthcare are embracing AI as they are seeing clear advantages in using the technology to enhance their ad strategies, while the retail industry's adoption is slow, the report said. Google recently announced the expansion of its AI-powered search capabilities into the consumer packaged goods sector through enhancements in Google Shopping.

Look Hoo's trying to go one better

It has been three years to the day, and David Probert has hardly gone through a day without reliving the bittersweet moment of "the one that got away" in UK's most famous flat race, the Epsom Derby. On June 4, 2022, the Welsh jockey felt the adrenaline rush kicking shortly after Tattenham Corner when he began weaving a passage on his 150-1 mount Hoo Ya Mal for his former master Andrew Balding. But, when he saw daylight at the 500m, he knew deep down he would have to settle for second-best. The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Desert Crown (Richard Kingscote) was in full flight and beyond catching. Hoo Ya Mal still ran out of his skin, clipping down the deficit on the winner to 2½ lengths, while holding off a late charge from Westover to win the battle for the minors by a head. Probert, 34, has since not sat on a Derby contender again, leaving it to fate to gift him with a second chance to go one better one day, so he can realise his boyhood dream. As fate would have it, Hoo Ya Mal's owner, Ahmad Al Shaikh has turned dream-maker for the 1,600-odd race-winning jockey again. The Dubai brain behind Green Team Racing has booked Probert on the Owen Burrows-trained Al Wasl Storm, and yet again, they head in as overlooked underdogs. The three-year-old grey by Affinisea is another long shot at cricket odds, just a touch better than Hoo Ya Mal at 100-1. Probert, whose highest acclaim is an overseas Group 2 win aboard Highland Knight for Balding in the Oettingen-Rennen at Baden-Baden in Germany in 2012, is fully aware of the racing conundrum facing him in the £1.5 million (S$2.6 million) Group 1 2,400m race on June 7 (10.30pm Singapore time). Overjoyed to finally get a chance to soothe the three-year-long hurt, he is, however, sitting atop a horse bred for jumps against a host of Derby bluebloods. Yet, he knows first-hand about the romance of just being a ticket holder and even coming so close to hitting the jackpot. "A Derby win would be massive. We all grow up wanting to ride in a race like this, compete at a high level," said Probert. "Hoo Ya Mal ran a great second in the Derby. I watched that race plenty of times. "I got a nice split down the inside. Hoo Ya Mal was renowned to be quite keen, but we managed to get a nice split through the inside. "But, lo and behold, Desert Crown was still on the bridle on the outside a furlong down. "I was still delighted. This is what this is all about, isn't it? Trying to find these horses and hopefully, we found one." Like most jockeys saddled with a "no-hoper", Probert would rather look for any silver lining. "He actually has a good profile about him. He hasn't had much experience," he said. "He's done very little wrong in all the starts that he's had." Probert was aboard at the last two of Al Wasl Storm's three starts, including the last when he broke his maiden tag in a 2,400m race at Chester on May 9, but said the character-building run outweighed the win. "Chester is renowned as a good Derby trial. He seemed to handle the sharp ends and quick track very well," he said. "It feels like as if, mentally, he's grown up a lot. He was still quite raw going into Chester. "He had to do things the hard way from the front. He galloped it out relentlessly. "So, I'd imagine a mile and a half around a track like Epsom could suit him. He's a well-balanced horse and has a good mind on him." Al Wasl Storm had a first taste of the undulating Epsom course in an easy stretch-out on May 28. "It was nice to get him on the track with lovely ground this morning," said Probert. "We just took it from the mile. He never had a lead, we just allowed him to use himself, he quickened up well. "I'm delighted with the way he is in himself. Al Shaikh is a passionate fellow, and I'd just love for him to run well for him. "This is what dreams are made of. You've got to be in it to win it." manyan@

Health Minister Ong Ye Kung 'dismayed' at company's S$52,000 monthly rental bid for Tampines clinic

SINGAPORE: Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said he was "dismayed" at a healthcare company's S$52,188 monthly rental bid for a clinic in a Housing and Development Board (HDB) estate in Tampines. In a Facebook post on Wednesday night (Jun 4), Mr Ong said: "This must translate to higher cost of healthcare one way or another, and negate the effort of Ministry of Health, Singapore (MOH) to try to keep the cost of primary healthcare affordable. "More importantly, higher rental bids do not necessarily translate to the best healthcare that the community needs." The successful bid for the ground floor unit at Block 954C Tampines Street 96 by I-Health Medical Holdings in January has led to discussions online about rental fees and healthcare costs. The rental works out to over S$1,000 per sq m. NEW TENDER APPROACH He noted that MOH and HDB last month launched a new tender approach for general practitioner (GP) clinics at Bartley Beacon. In the new approach, quality of care will account for 70 per cent of the tender evaluation, and rental will make up 30 per cent. The unit is about 100 sq m – twice the size of normal clinics – and suited for clinics which intend to provide multi-disciplinary care and "try out new care models", he added. 'Through this Price-Quality evaluation Model (PQM), we can shift the competitive focus away from rental rates, to better care models, including preventive care, chronic disease management and mental health,' Mr Ong said. The tender for the unit at Bartley Beacon was closed on May 29. 'I understand from my MOH officers that we have received interesting proposals, with rental bid prices significantly below the Tampines site in per sqm terms. We are currently assessing the proposals,' he said. Mr Ong noted the Tampines clinic was tendered in December 2024 and awarded in March this year, before the PQM model started. 'Going forward, and given the encouraging response to the Bartley Beacon site, we will make the new PQM approach the norm, when tendering our GP clinics in our HDB heartlands,' Mr Ong said. 'It will be a meaningful shift, both in improving primary care, and ensuring greater affordability.'
