Cyclists pedal over the Skyway in 11th annual SkyRide
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — More than 1,500 cyclists got to see Buffalo from a unique vantage point on Sunday at GoBike's 11th annual SkyRide, where bikers rode over the Skyway. 'This has been on my bucket list for a few years,' said Sue Hogenkamp, who signed up to ride with her friend, Donna Ledwin. 'It is super fun. I love going over the skyway … on a bike, you have a lot more time,' Ledwin said. 'You're really taking the panorama and you're also working really hard. It looks easy in a car, it is not easy on a bike.' The event takes bikers on a 13-mile course starting on the Skyway and around downtown. For the first time this year, people could bike on parts of the I-190. 'The reason we shut down the highway to do this — it's not just for the great view, because it is great and it is fun, but for many this is the first time they're riding their bikes without the fear of a car coming up behind them,' said GoBike executive director Kevin Heffernan. GoBike partners with Independent Health for this event. Their goal is to promote a healthier and more bike-friendly Buffalo. 'We're building a healthier community and a more connected community when we get people out on bikes,' Heffernan said. Southwick's Zoo visitors left stuck in the air, rescued after "Sky Ride" malfunctions again
Visitors at Southwick's Zoo in Mendon had to be rescued from gondolas that were stuck in the air on Monday after the "Sky Ride" attraction malfunctioned again. The fire department responded with ladder trucks to reach people who were stranded high up. WBZ-TV's helicopter captured a firefighter carrying a child to safety down a ladder. Crews brought others to the ground with lift trucks. "This afternoon, the Skyfari Sky Ride at Southwick's Zoo experienced an unexpected issue that required the ride to be shut down mid-operation," a zoo spokesperson said in a statement. "Out of an abundance of caution, we contacted the Mendon Fire Department, who responded promptly and worked alongside our trained operations and security teams to safely assist guests from the ride's gondolas." The Sky Ride gives guests an aerial view of the animals below. The ride takes visitors 30 feet in the air at its highest point. In 2022, 40 people were rescued from the Sky Ride after an oil leak forced it to stop. Nobody was hurt in the incident. The zoo says that since then, it "developed a comprehensive emergency response plan specifically for the Skyfari Sky Ride and trained our team accordingly." "The safety of our guests remains our top priority, and we appreciate the patience and understanding of everyone involved," the zoo said.

Rooftop tragedy: Hotel Sky Cape Town says man who died after jumping from the rooftop was not a guest
Hotel Sky in Cape Town says an incident in which a man jumped from the hotel's rooftop viewing deck is being investigated by authorities. Speaking to TimesLIVE, the hotel's group director for sales and marketing Inge Dykman confirmed the man had not been a registered hotel guest nor had he bought a ticket for the Sky Hi Ride attraction on the premises. 'The gentleman was a walk-in guest. We have a few walk-in guests at our hotel,' said Dykman. 'He didn't purchase any tickets. It's still under investigation and we're working with the police and forensic services to make sure that whatever information goes out is accurate, but he didn't purchase a ticket to the Sky Hi Ride.' Police spokesperson Capt FC van Wyk also confirmed the incident is under investigation. '[The] circumstances surrounding the death of an unidentified man whose body was found on Monday afternoon at Lower Long Street, Cape Town CBD, are under investigation. A postmortem will be conducted to determine race, age and cause of death. An inquest was registered for investigation,' he said. According to Dykman, the man accessed the 28th floor, which includes the rooftop viewing deck above the Sky Hi Ride. 'There's no relation to the Sky Hi Ride. He went to the 28th floor which is on top of the Sky Ride, at the viewing deck, and he then went over [to] the balustrade and jumped over there.' Dykman said safety measures are in place at the hotel. 'There are security cameras and it is clear you can't just jump from the building. You have to climb over steep balustrades. Children under 12 are not allowed. There are safety checks every day before we do anything because we have a hotel, firstly, so any hotel has those safety and security measures with rooftops and all of that,' she said. The hotel's MD Paul Kelley expressed the hotel's condolences. 'Hotel Sky Cape Town confirms with the deepest sadness that a tragic and isolated incident occurred at the hotel today [Monday] involving a walk-in visitor who took his own life by jumping off the hotel rooftop. 'We are devastated by this unexpected event and our heartfelt condolences go out to the individual's family and loved ones. 'It is important for us to recognise mental health illness and depression and to recognise where people need help and assistance and to never take these incidents for granted as a community,' he said. 'Hotel Sky Cape Town would like to reiterate that this incident had nothing to do with Sky Hi Ride, as these two areas are separate locations. 'Hotel Sky Cape Town remains a safe and secure environment for guests, visitors and staff, which fully complies with international and local safety and security measures. The SA Police Service and relevant authorities have conducted a full investigation. 'We have extended support to all those affected by this tragedy. Our sincere condolences again to family and friends of this gentleman,' he said.
