Mark Doran to succeed Andy McEntee as Antrim Football boss
Mark Doran will succeed Andy McEntee as the new Antrim senior football manager. Nominations for the role, which was vacated by Andy McEntee after three years in charge, closed at the end of July. Paddy Bradley had been the early front-runner, but withdrew his name while former Louth boss Colin Kelly and Barry Dillon, who led Ulster University to Sigerson Cup glory in 2024, were also linked with the role. It is understood that Colm Nally was part of Kelly's potential backroom team and the Drogheda native was interviewed for the role before withdrawing from the race last week. Dillon was also nominated for the post, but is currently focused on managing Tyrone club Ardboe. Doran, who managed Monaghan side Ballybay to a county title in 2022, also had coaching spells with the Clare and Roscommon footballers and is currently with Slaughtneil. The Derry SFC got under way last weekend with the Emmet's recording an impressive 2-22 to 1-12 win over Kilrea to set up a second round clash with Bellaghy. The Longstone clubman stepped down as Slaughtneil manager last season following their semi-final loss to Glen, but was reappointed to the role back in March. It is expected that he'll continue in his role with Slaughtneil until their season is over. In a statement, Antrim GAA said: The Antrim County Committee are pleased to confirm that Mark Doran has been appointed as Manager of the Antrim Senior Football Team. "Over the past number of years, Mark has been involved at the highest levels of the game, including coaching roles with Down, Clare, and Roscommon senior football teams, and team management with Ballybay and Slaughtneil. "His contributions have been widely praised across the counties he has worked with, helping teams improve performance and compete at provincial and national levels." Antrim Chairperson Seamus McMullan added: "'Mark has built a solid reputation as a coach and manager. His depth of experience and understanding of the modern game make him an ideal fit to lead our Senior Footballers forward. 'We wish Mark and the panel the very best and look forward to the 2026 season." Doran's full management and backroom team will be confirmed over the coming weeks. McEntee stepped down in June after three seasons in charge of the Saffrons. Antrim lost out to Armagh in the Ulster SFC quarter-final. They reached the last four of the Tailteann Cup in each of McEntee's first two years in charge, but lost out to Wexford in the preliminary quarter-finals this season and were also relegated to Division Four in the spring. Antrim suffered a further blow earlier this summer when captain Dermot McAleese, 31, announced his shock retirement from county football.

Slaughtneil boss Mark Doran installed as new Antrim manager
Antrim have appointed Slaughtneil manager Mark Doran as their new inter-county football manager, replacing the departed Andy McEntee. The county confirmed the news in a statement this evening, Antrim GAA chairperson Seamus McMullan saying that Doran's "depth of experience and understanding of the modern game make him an ideal fit to lead our senior footballers forward". The former Down footballer remains the Slaughtneil manager for the 2025 club season. He had initially resigned after last year's Derry SFC loss to then All-Ireland champions Glen but was reappointed to the role in March. Doran had been strongly linked with the Derry job last year, following Mickey Harte's resignation but ultimately wound up taking a coaching role alongside Davy Burke in Roscommon. He previously held coaching roles with Down between 2019 and 2021, and had spells on the coaching ticket with Clare and Wicklow. In addition to that, he was co-manager of the Ballybay side that claimed the 2022 Monaghan SFC title. McEntee vacated the Antrim post after three seasons in charge, following their Tailteann Cup quarter-final loss to Wexford. The ex-Meath manager had succeeded in keeping Antrim in the third tier of the league in his opening two seasons, as well as reaching successive Tailteann Cup semi-finals, but the county will begin 2026 in Division 4 following relegation at the start of this year.

Shane McGuigan leads Slaughtneil charge as they claim comfortable victory over battling Kilrea
Fionn McEldowney and Christopher Bradley helped cement Slaughtneil's first-half advantage by finding the Kilrea net, but when Paddy Quigg pounced for Kilrea's only goal in the first minute of the second period, this lent a new dimension to the contest. Kilrea stepped up a gear but were unable to maintain the pace because of Slaughtneil's power and experience. With Shane McGuigan posting 10 points for Slaughtneil, this meant he proved a thorn in Kilrea's side, but James Kielt also exhibited his finishing skills by helping himself to 0-07 of the losers' total. Glen, who won the title in 2023, turned in a strong second-half performance to overcome a plucky Banagher side by 1-17 to 0-14. But reigning Derry title holders Newbridge were forced to absorb a huge shock when Dungiven proved their masters. Dungiven hit the ground running and never relented as they left their opponents in their wake by chalking up 2-15, to which Newbridge responded with 0-11. Meanwhile, Erin's Own, Cargin have fired out a warning that they do not intend to be separated from the Antrim Championship title which they have owned over the course of recent years. It was St John's who were forced to bear the brunt of a Cargin onslaught on Sunday which took the side to a 4-15 to 1-11 victory. By halfway, the sides were deadlocked at 0-09 each and there had been no hint of the tidal wave of Erin's Own attacks. But when Benen Kelly, Kevin O'Boyle and Conor Johnston hit the net, St John's were left floundering. A second goal from Johnston catapulted Cargin into an unassailable lead. And with Sean O'Neill helping with a points blitz, Ronan Devlin's side glided to victory. Also in the Antrim Championship, St Gall's turned up the heat against All Saints to win by 4-16 to 1-19 with Daniel Quinn, Conn Doherty, Niall Burns and Niall O'Neill grabbing their goals, while Paddy McAleer and James McDonnell kept their opponents in touch by claiming a generous share of points. Portglenone, meanwhile, overcame Rossa by 2-14 to 0-12. Crossmaglen Rangers could be on the scent of yet another Armagh title following their opening round 1-13 to 0-11 win over Granemore. A Cian McConville goal fired up the Rangers, and with Aaron O'Neill and Paul Hughes leading a points blitz, the Rangers crossed the winning line safely. Two other teams from the south of the county, Culloville and Cullyhanna, also tasted opening round victories. Culloville just managed to pip Killeavy by 4-16 to 3-18 with Eoin Duffy leading their scoring blitz, while Cullyhanna got the better of Madden by 1-13 to 0-15, with Ross McQuillan and Kieran McCooey landing the late scores.
