Patrick McClean's red card rescinded as Sligo Rovers win another appeal
Sligo Rovers have won a red card appeal for the second time in a week after Patrick McClean's controversial dismissal was wiped out by the FAI's appeals body today. McClean was sent off after a challenge on Mason Melia, in what appeared to be a decision based on stopping a clear goalscoring opportunity. The decision was met with bewilderment from McClean and his team-mates. The game was poised at 0-0 at the time of the red, which Pat's went on to win 3-0. Sligo boss John Russell rued the decision which he felt it turned the match on its head. He said: "It was never a red card. There was a covering defender." RTÉ Soccer analyst Alan Cawley described it as "one of the worst decisions I've ever seen". Sligo immediately appealed the red card and were successful this afternoon. A statement from the FAI read: "An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal for wrongful dismissal following Patrick McClean's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August "In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Patrick McClean will be available for Sligo Rovers FC's next SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus Waterford FC on 22 August." The Bit O' Red were also successful in their appeal over goalkeeper Sam Sargeant's red card against Shelbourne nine days ago when the goalkeeper was adjudged to have handled the ball outside of the penalty area. That was overturned last Monday. In the First Division, Treaty United also won an appeal over a red card in their 2-0 defeat Bray Wanderers last month.

Sligo Rovers red card appeal result is in as Patrick McClean learns his fate
Sligo Rovers have won their appeal against the red card handed to defender Patrick McClean during Sunday's Premier Division clash with St Patrick's Athletic. The game was scoreless when McClean received his marching orders from referee Damien MacGraith, minutes before the half-time break. Within 15 minutes of the restart, the Saints were three-up, and they could have scored more as they claimed an easy win in what had been, up to McClean's sending off, a cagey affair. And just as Sargeant's red card was overturned, McClean has been informed that he will not have to serve a suspension on August 22 against Waterford. According to a statement from the League of Ireland office: 'An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal for wrongful dismissal following Patrick McClean's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August 2025. Thankfully we did get one overturned last week. 'But it's hard as a manager because you don't want to be complaining all the time about decisions, because you want the game to be played in the right manner, and we want to play the right way and Pat's want to play the right way, but the game was spoiled by the decision.' He added: 'I think everyone in the ground bar the man in the middle could see it was never a red card. (There was) a covering defender. That changes the game, there is no doubt about it. 'It ruined it. It's very frustrating, we've come up here to try and get a result. We are fighting for our lives and it has changed the game, and we have ended up coming down the road with a 3-0 defeat.' Asked if he had a word with the official, he replied: 'I did just briefly at the very end of the game and he said, 'I'll have to have a look back, but for me it was a red'.' Sligo Rovers win appeal over Paddy McClean's red card
Sligo Rovers have been successful in their second appeal in a week as the Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI upheld the club's appeal for wrongful dismissal after Paddy McClean was sent off in the defeat to St Patrick's Athletic at Richmond Park on Sunday evening. Referee Damien McGraith brandished a straight red card for McClean when Mason Melia was tripped on the edge of the box, but the Derry native was not the last man. It's the second successful appeal by Sligo Rovers in a week after the club's appeal over Sam Sargeant's red card was upheld by the Independent Appeal Committee last week. A statement from the FAI on Monday said: 'An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal for wrongful dismissal following Patrick McClean's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August 2025. 'In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Patrick McClean will be available for Sligo Rovers FC's next SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus Waterford FC on 22 August 2025.' A frustrated John Russell said after Sunday's game: 'I think everyone in the ground, bar the man in the middle, could see it was never a red card. There was a covering defender,' he said. 'That changes the game, there is no doubt about it. It ruined it. It's very frustrating, we've come up here to try and get a result. Justice for Sligo Rovers after McClean's red card rescinded
For the second game in a row, Sligo Rovers have been successful in having a red card appeal to the FAI upheld. Patrick McClean's sending-off when Sunday's visit to St Patrick's Athletic was scoreless proved pivotal to the ninth-placed team losing 3-0 at Inchicore. Referee Damien MacGraith brandished the red card after McClean felled Mason Melia but the presence of a covering defender caused bafflement for spectators and viewers. An FAI statement confirmed justice has been served, albeit belatedly: 'An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal for wrongful dismissal following Patrick McClean's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August 2025. 'In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Patrick McClean will be available for Sligo Rovers FC's next SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus Waterford FC on 22 August 2025.' Sligo boss John Russell was already reeling from a similar situation last week when goalkeeper Sam Sargeant's was sent off in the defeat to Shelbourne. 'Yeah, we have to (appeal),' he said after Sunday's defeat. 'Thankfully we did get one overturned last week. 'You are coming up to St Pat's and this time last year we conceded a penalty in the 97th minute. And it was never a penalty, and we ended up losing the game 4-3. 'But you are coming up thinking hopefully it will turn for us and we might get decisions for us, and then this happens. It's hugely frustrating.' He added: 'I think everyone in the ground, bar the man in the middle, could see it was never a red card.'

TWO League of Ireland red cards have been overturned following successful appeals through the FAI
Two decisions have been overturned on the same League of Ireland weekend AMPLE APPEALS TWO League of Ireland red cards have been overturned following successful appeals through the FAI SLIGO Rovers goalkeeper Sam Sargeant's red card against Shelbourne has been overturned after a successful appeal. The 27-year-old was deemed to have handled the ball outside the penalty area against last season's Premier Division champions. Advertisement 2 It was a very tight call for the officials to make 2 Steven Healy was sent off for a challenge on Billy O'Neill A slightly over hit through ball by John Martin aiming for Ellis Chapman in the 84th minute went all the way through to the English goalkeeper. Under severe pressure from the Shelbourne substitute, Sargeant was forced to deal with the ball right on the edge of his box. Referee Rob Harvey had deemed the former Leyton Orient and Waterford keeper to handle the ball outside of his penalty area and showed him a red card. 20-year-old Conor Walsh came on for the dying minutes of the contest to make his 7th league appearance of the season having had a six game run as first choice before Sargeant found his form again. Advertisement The game finished 2-0 with Boyd having doubled the champions lead just minutes before the incident, after Ali Coote fired a brilliant strike past Sargeant early in the second half. Sligo Rovers appealed the decision to show their goalkeeper a straight red. The appeal was successful for the Bit O'Red after an Independent Appeal Committee deemed the decision unfair. A League of Ireland statement read: "An Independent Appeal Committee of the FAI has upheld Sligo Rovers FC's appeal. "For the wrongful dismissal following Sam Sargeant's red card in Sligo Rovers FC's SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division fixture versus Shelbourne FC on 2 August 2025. Advertisement "In accordance with the FAI Disciplinary Regulations, Sam Sargeant will be available for Sligo Rovers FC's next fixture versus St. Patrick's Athletic FC on 10 August 2025." This has come just days after Treaty United's midfielder Steven Healy had a fruitful appeal of his own for a wrongful decision against Bray Wanderers. Jose Mourinho wipes away tears as he pays heartbreaking tribute to Porto's Champions League-winning captain Jorge Costa Just 25 minutes into the fixture, the 21-year-old was deemed to have denied a clear goal-scoring opportunity when 'fouling' Bray Wanderers' Billy O'Neill. O'Neill found himself between Healy and Ben Lynch before hitting the deck just on the edge of the Treaty United box. Advertisement The match referee Oliver Moran took a look at his linesman before giving Healy the card two days before his birthday. The Shannonsiders were 1-0 up at the time of the dismissal and went on to lose the game 3-2 after a Richard Ferizaj 95th minute winner. The three points would have been crucial for cementing Tommy Barrett's side's place in the play-off spots. Treaty United appealed the judgement straight after the game and it only took until the following morning for the result of the appeal to come through. Advertisement With the quick turn around of a Monday evening fixture against Kerry FC it was important for Treaty to ensure their star signing from Galway United was available for selection in the Munster derby. The appeal was triumphant as Healy was made eligible to face Colin Healy's side, which they went on to draw 1-1 and Healy was booked for his involvement in a melee.
