How Red Sox ‘beat' other clubs to 6-foot-7 lefty prospect who hits 97 mph

The Red Sox evaluate every single player who is released across Minor League Baseball. 'Whenever they come available, we're on it,' director of professional scouting Harrison Slutsky said. Eduardo Rivera — a young southpaw with a 6-foot-7, 237-pound frame — stood out among the others after the Athletics released him May 21, 2024. 'Age, physicality, velo, left-handed,' Slutsky said. 'Let's not overthink this one. We wanted to get him in our program.' Rivera has dominated since the Red Sox signed him to a minor league deal June 12, 2024, the day before his 21st birthday. Now 22, the lefty received a promotion to Double-A Portland last week after he posted a 1.61 ERA (44 ⅔ innings, eight earned runs) and 0.83 WHIP in 10 outings (six starts) for High-A Greenville. He allowed just 4.2 hits per nine innings and held opponents to a .138 batting average. Rivera, who throws his fastball 93-97 mph, struck out 39.5% of the batters he faced in High A. 'He's really taken off and thrived,' Slutsky said. 'I'm really excited to see him get the challenge at Double A. I think it was about due and it'll be fun to watch.' Slutsky said left-handed pitchers in their early 20s with Rivera's size and velocity typically don't land in the group of released players. 'We do not want Eduardo Rivera to get released and not get flagged,' Slutsky said. 'And then part of this thing is flagging them quickly. Moving quickly is important because (every) other team is doing the same thing, you think. ... And so you don't want to get beat. You want to be the first one to call the player. You want to start the process. You want to show them some love because you're in a competition to sign them.' Rivera — an Athletics 11th round pick out of Puerto Rico in 2021 — was a familiar name to the pro scouting department. The Red Sox had seen him pitch live during the 2023-24 offseason in the Puerto Rican Winter League for Cangrejeros de Santurce. He posted a 3.15 ERA in 20 innings. 'We went down there to scout that league and he had thrown,' Slutsky said. 'And he showed some traits down there similar to what we saw when he was released.' MLB teams have access to every minor leaguers' pitch data and video for scouting purposes. 'We're able to evaluate every minor leaguer that way,' Slutsky said. Why does a young kid with his massive body and mid-to-upper 90s velo get released? 'Sometimes things run their course and a change of the scenery is what's needed,' Slutsky said. 'We're in a world where roster spots are at a premium and sometimes things like this can happen. ... He was demoted a level and had been moved to the 'pen at that moment in time.' Rivera struggled with control in the A's system, posting a 12.9% walk percentage from 2021-24. Command looked like it was becoming even more of an issue at the beginning of the 2024 season. He began the season with High-A Lansing where he walked 10 batters and allowed 11 hits in 8 ⅔ innings. The A's demoted him to Low-A Stockton where he walked three batters in 2 ⅔ innings before his release. 'Our job is to evaluate them when they shake loose,' Slutsky said. 'And we did enough homework to figure out that this was a guy we felt very comfortable bringing into our environment.' The walk rate didn't scare the Red Sox because they looked at it as a relatively small sample size. Slutsky also thought maybe some of the uncertainty he experienced (changing roles, demotion) could have factored into it. 'I wasn't overly concerned because I felt like he had shown the ability to throw strikes at times,' Slutsky said. It was a low-risk, high-reward signing. 'He flashed a decent breaking ball,' said Slutsky who added that the Red Sox saw clear development opportunities and the ability to develop his arsenal. 'Oftentimes I think on these types of lower level releases, guys that are in the lower minors, you're kind of just looking for some building blocks and potential upside,' Slutsky added. 'And he just checked quite a few of those boxes. You can't teach that kind of physicality. He had the present arm strength and he had been moved into a 'pen role. But we kind of said, 'OK. He was starting not that long ago.' That kind of tells you something as well, too. So just you start adding up these pieces.' Slutsky said the Red Sox player development and pitching department have done a terrific job working with Rivera who throws a fastball, slider, split-finger fastball and sweeper. 'I think it's just a good example of the pro group and the development group working together,' he said. 'Us identifying players we think can kind of thrive in our development environment and then that happening, at least to date.' The process includes the pro scouting department looping in the player development department after they identify a released player. 'You've got to know what boxes to look for and to check off to see if there's some upside and if it's somebody that could thrive in our environment,' Slutsky said. The Red Sox have a system in place to alert them about every released player. 'We evaluate every available player,' Slutsky said. 'The pro group's in charge of the foreign leagues and independent leagues and released players and minor league free agents and all of that stuff. 'There's not a player that goes out there that we don't at least look at,' he added. The Password picked for the Futures Game Prospect Jhostynxon Garcia — also known by his nickname 'The Password' — will represent the Red Sox in the 2025 All-Star Futures Game. He is batting .292 with a .363 on-base percentage, .569 slugging percentage, .932 OPS, nine homers, five doubles and two triples in 33 games (146 plate appearances) since his promotion to Triple-A Worcester. More than Garcia's swing stood out to manager Alex Cora when the 22-year-old center fielder participated in his first big league spring training camp earlier this year. 'We saw him in spring training and we didn't see the best version offensively,' Cora said before Boston's 13-6 win over the Reds on Monday. 'In between (pitches), mechanics-wise he was off. But the way he played the outfield was eye-opening.' The Athletic's Keith Law ranked Garcia No. 46 on his most recent Top 50 MLB prospect rankings. Baseball America ranks him Boston's No. 6 prospect behind Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer, Franklin Arias, Payton Tolle and Brandon Clarke. Tharoor visits Russia, meets foreign minister Sergey Lavrov

New Delhi Congress leader Shashi Tharoor, currently at the centre of a row within the party, is on a private visit to Russia to promote a documentary series based on his book 'Inglorious Empire' and has had meetings with key members of the Russian leadership such as foreign minister Sergey Lavrov. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor during a meeting with the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, on the sidelines of the Primakov Readings, in Moscow. (PTI) Tharoor is in Russia at the invitation of Russia's state-run television network RT, which produced the 10-part series based on his 2017 book, which itself was based on a speech he made at the 2015 Oxford Union debate on the theme 'Does Britain owe reparations to its former colonies?'. He arrived in Russia on June 21 and participated in the St Petersburg Economic Forum before travelling to Moscow, where he met Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the committee on international affairs of the State Duma or lower house of Parliament, on June 23. On the same day, Tharoor also met the Indian diaspora at the Indian embassy. Tharoor met foreign minister Lavrov on the margins of the Primakov Readings, an annual international meeting focused on international relations and the world economy, on June 24. On Wednesday, Tharoor met Konstantin Kosachev, chair of the foreign affairs committee of the upper house of Parliament, and members of the Malayalee diaspora in Russia. While much of the focus has been on the documentary series, set to be aired by RT sometime in the third quarter of the year, Tharoor has briefed the senior Russian officials he met on India's fight against terrorism against the backdrop of Operation Sindoor and discussed issues such as the Iran-Isreal conflict, the situation in Gaza and India-Russia relations, people familiar with the matter said. Tharoor recently played a similar role when he led one of seven all-party delegations sent by the government to 33 countries to brief interlocutors about India's new approach to fighting terrorism as exemplified by Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 to target terrorist infrastructure in territories controlled by Pakistan in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack in April. The 10-part series based on Tharoor's book will cover British colonialism, its impact on India, and the way the colonialism unfolded and ended. During Tharoor's meeting with Slutsky on June 23, the two sides discussed 'pressing international issues, including ongoing conflicts in the Middle East, the crisis in Ukraine, and the recent escalation in tensions between India and Pakistan', RT said on social media. 'India is a key member of BRICS. It is essential that we begin serious discussions about developing a parliamentary dimension within BRICS in the near future,' Slutsky said. 'Good to renew my acquaintance with my Russian counterpart, Mr Slutsky, who had visited Parliament in New Delhi a few months ago with a Russian delegation. We exchanged views on regional peace, #OperationSindoor and possible avenues of future parliamentary cooperation,' Tharoor said on social media. Tharoor's visit to Russia coincided with a controversy within the Congress party triggered by his praise for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a recent newspaper article on the lessons from the Indian government's global outreach on Operation Sindoor. The article was reposted on social media by the official handle of the Prime Minister's Office, drawing criticism from Congress circles. In his first response to the controversy, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, without directly referring to Tharoor, said for the party, it is 'country first', but for some individuals, it is 'Modi first'. Soon after, Tharoor appeared to respond to Kharge's comments with a social media post that said: 'Don't ask permission to fly. The wings are yours. And the sky belongs to no one…'

After English, a lesson in French: Shashi Tharoor slams Pakistan in Russia

Shashi Tharoor. (PTI photo) NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor , widely recognised for his eloquence in English, drew widespread praise this week for speaking fluent French while strongly criticising Pakistan's inclusion in an upcoming anti-terrorism conference organised by Russia. During a meeting in Moscow with Russian Liberal Democratic Party chairman Leonid Slutsky, Tharoor responded in French to Slutsky's remarks regarding a proposed summit on combating terrorism. Slutsky had announced Russia's plans to host a conference early next year involving the parliamentary heads of six countries: Turkey, Iran, Russia, India, Pakistan, and China. He emphasised the need for concrete action, not just discussion, on the issue of terrorism. In a striking moment, Tharoor replied in French, directly addressing the problem of Pakistan's involvement. "There is a country that unfortunately provides a safe haven for these terrorist groups," Tharoor said. "They have their headquarters, they train terrorists in their country, fund them, arm them, and send them to other nations. It's difficult for us to ignore the fact that they enjoy patronage in Pakistan. " The video of Tharoor's French-language exchange with Slutsky quickly went viral on social media, earning him praise for both his linguistic skill and diplomatic clarity. Following the meeting, Tharoor posted on X: 'Good to renew my acquaintance with my Russian counterpart, Mr Slutsky, who had visited Parliament in New Delhi a few months ago with a Russian delegation. We exchanged views on regional peace, Operation Sindoor , and possible avenues of future parliamentary cooperation.' Tharoor has long been vocal about Pakistan's links to terrorism and reiterated India's concerns abroad while leading the Indian delegation under the government's Operation Sindoor global outreach initiative.

Committed to strategic partnership, says Leonid Slutsky about India-Russia ties

By Suchitra Mukherjee Moscow [Russia], May 23 (ANI): Leonid Slutsky, Chairman of the Duma Committee on International Affairs, described a landmark meeting between Indian and Russian parliamentary delegations, marking a new chapter in the strategic relationship between the two nations. The session saw full representation from all parliamentary parties on both sides, underlining the shared commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and further strengthening bilateral ties. 'The meeting between the delegations of the Indian Parliament ended with members of both Houses being represented. All parliamentary parties working in the Houses of the Indian Parliament were represented. On our side, all five parliamentary parties working in the State Duma were also represented at a high level. I chaired, also with me, my colleagues were received by Vladimir Vladimirovich Vasilyev, the leader of the United Russia parliamentary majority faction, and Vladimir Vladimirovich personally heads the friendship group with the Indian Parliament.' He continued, 'Vasily Ivanovich Piskaryov, chairman of the Security Committee, also represents United Russia, one of the leaders of Just Russia, my first deputy on the committee, Alexei Vasilyevich Chepa, my colleague Anna Skroznikova of New People, and Kazbek Taisaev of the CPRF.' Discussions during the meeting focused on the ongoing strategic interaction between Russia and India. Slutsky highlighted how this partnership has been recognized at the highest levels, referencing recent communications between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, as well as high-level talks between foreign ministers of both countries. He stressed the mutual desire to deepen ties, particularly within global platforms and integration blocs. 'We talked about the strategic interaction between Russia and India, which was previously noted in a telephone conversation between the President of Russia and Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Moreover, on May 2, Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov, our Foreign Minister, whom we congratulate on his high award, the Order of St. Andrew the First-Called, and India's Minister of External Affairs Jaishankar spoke about the same,' Slutsky said. Slutsky added, 'We remain committed to the course of strategic partnership between our countries, to cooperation in the most important interstate platforms, in integration blocs, first of all BRICS, and we will increase this bilateral cooperation, including through parliamentary diplomacy. And, of course, we are committed to peace and strongly condemn terrorism.' A key moment in the meeting was the Russian delegation's message of condolence and solidarity with India after the recent terrorist attack in South Kashmir. The two sides also agreed to boost cooperation on multiple fronts, including inter-party relations and specialised committees. 'We expressed our deepest condolences to the Indian side in connection with the heinous terrorist attack in South Kashmir on April 22. We agreed to increase inter-parliamentary cooperation, which was facilitated by the recent visit to India by the Chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, in the format of inter-party cooperation, in the format of cooperation between specialized committees, in the format of friendly relations and invariably the closest professional cooperation, which today the parliaments of Russia and India need equally,' Chairman of the Duma Committee on International Affairs said. He added, 'So today's meeting is an important check of the clock and, perhaps, a kind of transition of inter-parliamentary cooperation between our countries to a somewhat higher orbit. We will synchronise our watches, we will meet more often, we will work more often, and we are sure that this will contribute to the thesis that the 21st century will be the century of parliamentary diplomacy. A very important visit, very important and fruitful negotiations.' Earlier yesterday, the Indian delegation met Sheikh Nahyan Mabarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Co-Existence in the UAE, who conveyed his deep condolences for the Pahalgam terrorist attack. The Indian side used the opportunity to draw attention to the perpetration of cross-border terrorism and Pakistan's efforts to sow social disharmony in India. Throughout its visit, the all-party Indian delegation has consistently projected a message of national unity and a resolute stance against terrorism in all forms. The delegation's global outreach aims to reinforce India's policy of zero tolerance for terrorism and mobilise broader support from international partners. Following the Pahalgam attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, conducting precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu-Kashmir (PoJK). The Indian Armed Forces also responded to further Pakistani aggression by targeting airbases. The military escalation led to an understanding to halt further action after a direct call between Pakistan's Director General of Military Operations and his Indian counterpart. (ANI)
