Springfield cyclists to ride 100 miles for Special Olympics

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the fifth year in a row, a local cycling team, with a lot of heart, is going the distance for Special Olympics Massachusetts. Springfield's Small Business Administration Office to close Sunday With each turn of a pedal, this cycling team continues to carry a message of hope and inclusion for a cause that is bigger than themselves. 'Kevin's Krewe' is now riding into its fifth year to support Special Olympics Massachusetts. Named for Kevin Greenberg, a Special Olympics athlete, the team began in 2020 as a small group of friends, including his mother and father, taking on a 100-mile challenge. Since then, they have grown, riding each summer together and raising nearly $100,000 to support athletes of all abilities. 'This is about all of the families, caregivers, supporters, and athletes themselves who are incredible humans, who work so hard at what they do and deserve to be acknowledged,' said Janice Greenberg, Kevin's mom of 'Kevin's Krewe'. Now, the team is training for their next big ride, the Connecticut Valley Century, slated for September 7th, a challenging-but-rewarding 100-mile journey through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. The fundraising began Wednesday night with a kickoff at the Springfield JCC. 'The energy here is all around this idea that everyone deserves to be included. That's what it's all about that's what the funds will go to and support,' said Stephanie Esposito, AVP of development & fundraising & partner engagement, Special Olympics Massachusetts. Springfield's Small Business Administration Office to close Sunday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)—State lawmakers are pushing back as the closing of Springfield's Small Business Administration Office looms just days away, and no staff remain for the office. E-bike rider killed in Springfield car crash The lease for the Springfield office was terminated by DOGE officials earlier this year and officially ends on Sunday, June 1st. That means small business owners in our area will face an hours-long trip out to Boston if they need to visit an office for aid. Senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren, alongside Congressmen Richard Neal and Jim McGovern, are all speaking out. They're demanding a solution for western Massachusetts entrepreneurs, calling on Small Business Administration Administrator Kelly Loeffler to work to keep the Springfield district office fully staffed and open. They emphasize that this district office helps connect rural, underserved, and emerging markets to federal resources that support local economies. 'Having played a key role in helping small businesses apply for loans and disaster relief programs.' There are no longer any employees working at the Springfield office, following a string of mass firings of SBA workers back in February. Lawmakers say there's no plan to relocate the Springfield office or hire any new workers. State lawmakers have sent a list of questions to the SBA, asking who closed the office and what support will be given to people in our area. They're demanding a response by Saturday before the building closes Sunday.
