Springfield cyclists to ride 100 miles for Special Olympics
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – For the fifth year in a row, a local cycling team, with a lot of heart, is going the distance for Special Olympics Massachusetts.
Springfield's Small Business Administration Office to close Sunday
With each turn of a pedal, this cycling team continues to carry a message of hope and inclusion for a cause that is bigger than themselves. 'Kevin's Krewe' is now riding into its fifth year to support Special Olympics Massachusetts.
Named for Kevin Greenberg, a Special Olympics athlete, the team began in 2020 as a small group of friends, including his mother and father, taking on a 100-mile challenge. Since then, they have grown, riding each summer together and raising nearly $100,000 to support athletes of all abilities.
'This is about all of the families, caregivers, supporters, and athletes themselves who are incredible humans, who work so hard at what they do and deserve to be acknowledged,' said Janice Greenberg, Kevin's mom of 'Kevin's Krewe'.
Now, the team is training for their next big ride, the Connecticut Valley Century, slated for September 7th, a challenging-but-rewarding 100-mile journey through Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
The fundraising began Wednesday night with a kickoff at the Springfield JCC.
'The energy here is all around this idea that everyone deserves to be included. That's what it's all about that's what the funds will go to and support,' said Stephanie Esposito, AVP of development & fundraising & partner engagement, Special Olympics Massachusetts.

The 19th annual Kevin Lord Golf Tournament raises funds for local charities
It was a cool and blustery day, but that didn't stop golfers from getting out on the greens and fairways for the 19th annual Kevin Lord Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament took place at Bear Creek Golf & Country Club, near Barrie on Saturday, May 31. The annual tournament raises funds for several local charities. A record 172 golfers took part in the tournament – the largest contingent in the tournament's history. 'It's a memorial tournament,' explained organizer Al Lord. 'We've doing this for 19 years. It's in memory of my son Kevin who was a New Tecumseth resident and passed away at the young age of 20. He was a hockey player and ball hockey player. He represented Canada in (the) ball hockey world juniors in Slovakia in 2004 and he was playing Junior A for the Newmarket Hurricanes when he was diagnosed.' The tournament raised funds for Matthews House Hospice in Alliston, the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada, and Campfire Circle camp for children with cancer or a serious illness. A draw for Maple Leaf tickets was also very popular and raised around $3,000 in support of the Stevenson Memorial Hospital Foundation to support the hospital's redevelopment project. 'We have 172 golfers, it's a record year for us,' Al said. 'The weather didn't cooperate at all unfortunately, but everyone showed up. That's an indicator of the support we've been getting. We're also doing a special draw today for Maple Leafs tickets in support of Stevenson Memorial Hospital. ' The tournaments used a four-man scramble format to keep everyone busy on the greens and ensure all the teams kept moving throughout the 27-hole course. Over the past few years, the tournament has raised around $10,000 and it is expected to raise the same amount this year. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. Guardiola: There is so much love for Kevin
Guardiola: There is so much love for Kevin Pep Guardiola says the love and respect the City fans showed for Kevin De Bruyne will mean more to him than anything else. Our Belgian maestro played his final game at the Etihad as the Blues beat Bournemouth 3-1. Advertisement By the final whistle, few had left the stadium instead staying on to pay homage to one of the Club's greatest players of all time. GET YOUR KDB #17 SHIRT HERE! 'The important thing is the emotion for him, his family and our fans,' said Pep. 'The vibe we got and everybody saw how much everyone is connected. City and his family. How much love there is. 'Titles are nice to achieve but when you live in a place after a decade with this much love, respect and gratitude there is nothing better than that. 'It is a sad day and he will be missed, there is no doubt about that. He made the contribution to achieve the victory that is massively important. Advertisement 'Still we need the last step. It's been really, really nice.' The boss says Kevin will be impossible to replace, and he joins a list of elite talent that has left the Club in recent years – though all remain in the hearts and minds of our supporters. 'Like Sergio, some players are unique. Sergio scored the most important goal in our history, and it was so nice to see him, Vinny, Leroy, Raheem, Riyad, Joe Hart, Pablo [send messages]. 'Everyone was there. 10 years. It's a lot of games, titles and moments. Today we saw how much love was there. That is so nice. 'It's not about goals or assists. It's the connection and year by year to provide for this Club that people love. 'When Kevin arrived here I am pretty sure he was not a Man City fan, but I am sure now he is, and he will be forever because of the connection between all the people and him.'

Special Olympics Pennsylvania summer games set to kickoff in State College
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WTAJ) — The 55th annual Special Olympics Pennsylvania Summer Games are getting set to kick off in State College. Over 2,000 athletes and 750 coaches will travel to Penn State for three days of competition in athletics, equestrian, basketball, golf, gymnastics, softball, swimming, and tennis. This is a weekend to compete, have fun, and build lifelong friendships. 'Memories, building friendships, remembering how hard they've worked, what they've overcome, the challenges, and having the courage to show up and give their best,' Chief People Officer & Executive Vice President of Operations for Special Olympics Pennsylvania, Pam Velasquez, said. While all of the focus is on the athletes competing, behind the scenes, over 1,000 volunteers will be assisting over the three days. However, they say they could use a few hundred more. 'Our volunteers are the backbone of everything we do. We still have open spots available over the next few days. So please come out and join us. There are many ways to be involved,' Velasquez said. One couple has been volunteering with Special Olympics for over 20 years. Robert & Christine Masters began volunteering when their son was 8-years-old. They volunteer because of the energy, excitement, and fun they have during the event. 'It doesn't matter how good or bad a day you're having, if you come down here and you hang out with these athletes for any length of time, you will be having a great day when you leave, and so that's why it's worth coming back,' Robert Masters said. The hard work the Masters see during the weekend is inspiring. 'I think every day when I work with Special Olympics athletes, the kind of hurdles they have to overcome just to get out of bed in the morning and to get here more so than anything I experience, it just makes the rest of the things I might be worried about melt away and I just enjoy spending time with them, their smiles really are the best thing,' Christine Masters said. The games are set to kick off with an opening ceremony on Thursday, June 5, at 7:15 p.m. For a full schedule, follow the link here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
