NOVA star announces shock departure
After an impressive 13 years broadcasting one of Australia's most well-known national radio programs, NOVA star Kent 'Smallzy' Small has announced his shock departure. Smallzy confirmed he will 'hang up the headphones' on his popular national program Smallzy's Surgery this week after 23 years with the network. Taking to Instagram to make the announcement, Smallzy described his time hosting the national evening music show as 'a ride'. 'After 13 years and 92 ratings as the number 1 evening show in Australia….The time has come to hang up the headphones in Smallzy's Surgery,' he wrote. 'What a ride... When I first started the show in 2012, I never would have imagined getting to do the things I have done, from the celebrity interviews, to Nova's Red Room and travelling the globe covering the biggest events. 'They've all made the show something very, very special. 'Thank you to everyone who's been part of the show. I leave with fond memories, lifelong friendships, but most importantly I'm grateful to every single person who has ever chosen to spend their night with me.' Fellow NOVA star Joel Creasey commented on the post, saying: 'Nooooo 😭' Singer and NOVA radio presenter Ricki Lee said: 'You my friend, are an absolute gun and in a league of your own.' 'This may be the end of an era but I'm sure it's the beginning of something equally amazing. Thank you for being such an incredible supporter of Australian music artists for all these years — and for making us all smile for the last 13 years.' Smallzy's departure will create a big issue for the NOVA network, which will now need to find a new presenter, or presenters, to try and keep the number one audience. The once vibrant evening radio time slot has become a more barren place in recent years, with many networks replaying content from earlier in the day or from interstate stations. Currently, other evening players include The Hit Network's The Hot Hits with Nic & Loren, hosted by Nic Kelly and Loren Barry, Triple M Nights with Dave Gleeson KIIS, which previously aired an evening offering presented by Mitch Churi before axing him, currently replays Kyle and Jackie O from 6pm to 7pm before airing 'DJ Triple XL KIIS Mix' for two hours. Churi, who also co-hosted The Pick Up on KIIS with Brittany Hockley and Laura Byrne, said he was told by KIIS Network owners ARN that he would be departing the show in 2024. 'I was informed by the powers that be,' he said. 'They have identified my roles... as roles that won't be returning in 2025. I just want to say that it wasn't my decision. It wasn't my call. 'I really wanted to stay on this show with the two of you.' Brittany Hockley, left, Mitch Churi and Laura Byrne. Credit: Supplied / The Nightly Churi made an appearance earlier this year on NOVA after his departure from the KIIS Network, presenting a one off special. Smallzy confirmed that his final show will be Friday and that he plans to celebrate the shows history in his final week. 'The Surgery doors will close for the final time this Friday 15 August 2025. We've got a whole lot of history and one final week to relive it all.'

Nova host Kent ‘Smallzy' Small announces he's quitting his number 1 show
One of Australian radio's most popular hosts has announced he's quitting his show. Kent 'Smallzy' Small, who has hosted his own national number 1 weeknight show Smallzy's Surgery on Nova since 2012, is leaving the network after 23 years. In an emotional statement released by Small on Monday, the Sydney-based presenter said the 'time had come' to hang up his headphones. 'What a ride,' Small wrote on Instagram. He continued, 'When I first started the show I never would have imagined getting to do the things I have done, from the celebrity interviews, to Nova's Red Room and travelling the globe covering the biggest events. 'They've all made the show something very, very special. 'Thank you to everyone who's been part of the show. I leave with fond memories, lifelong friendships, but most importantly I'm grateful to every single person who has ever chosen to spend their night with me.' It's a huge loss for Nova, with Small one of the most well-connected entertainment personalities in the country. He's also delivered a staggering 92 ratings results at number 1 since Smallzy's Surgery first hit airwaves. Small, who started in community radio aged 16 in western Sydney before joining Nova in 2003, will host his final show this Friday. It's unclear what Nova will air once Smallzy's Surgery wraps up, however, there have been persistent rumours ex-KIIS FM star Mitch Churi has been in talks about joining the network. Fellow radio stars flooded the comment section of Smalls' announcement, with Nova's Tim Blackwell writing, 'You're a master my man! Congrats on a superb, untouched run and for bringing your world class talent to our lil corner of the dial for so many years. You will be missed mate.' Blackwell's co-hosts, Ricki-Lee Coulter, added 'You my friend, are an absolute gun and in a league of your own. This may be the end of an era but I'm sure it's the beginning of something equally amazing. Thank you for being such an incredible supporter of Australian music artists for all these years – and for making us all smile for the last 13 years.' Nic Kelly, who hosts a rival night show on the Hit Network, wrote, 'Unmatched innings – thank you for the blueprint – and smash what is to come.' Nova Entertainment, meanwhile, wrote in a statement, 'Smallzy's Surgery effectively invented the format in this country and, year after year, listeners have come to Nova FM every weekday evening for a unique take on pop culture, music, news and celebrity gossip. All of this has been underpinned by the relationships Smallzy has built, and the unparalleled access he enjoys to the world's biggest stars.' A bevy of A-list celebrities previously sent in video messages for Smallzy to honour his 20th anniversary in 2023, including Ed Sheeran, Billie Eilish and Katy Perry. '20 years is an incredible achievement to be in the radio game for, and to be at such the high level you're at. We've had such an amazing time together in the last 13 years of my career,' Sheeran said in his tribute. 'Hey Smallzy, congrats on 20 years on the air. Thank you for all your support over the years,' Eilish added. 'Smallzy, 20 years? No way. It can't be,' Perry said. 'I think I've been with you for 15 of those years and I barely look 21. I'm so proud of you. We love listening to you. You bring so much joy.'

Shock as fans find 'photo' circulating of Guy Sebastian with a black eye after being 'arrested'
A fake photo of Guy Sebastian with a black eye went viral on social media on Monday. The Australian singer, 43, was seen with a swollen and bruised eye in an image that was either Photoshopped or generated using AI technology. While the picture was clearly fake, many Reddit users questioned why they were seeing the image online. 'Anyone else getting spammed with weird fake Guy Sebastian news story ads?' one person asked. 'I wonder how they choose what celeb to target. Someone enough people know to maybe be interested, but not know well enough to know it's bullsh*t,' another wrote. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'He's in a legal battle with his former manager. So I think a PR campaign against him would check out,' another person joked. It comes after Guy recently recalled the time he was held at gunpoint by multiple police officers in Los Angeles for suspicion of grand theft auto. The Australian singer said a knee was placed on his body while a gun pressed his face into 'wet concrete'. During an interview on Nova's Smallzy's Surgery with Kent 'Smallzy' Small in April, Guy recounted his terrifying ordeal. The incident, which occurred in 2011 when Guy was living and working in the United States at age 29, was confirmed by his management to Sydney Morning Herald at the time. 'I was living at Ian Thorpe's house in LA. I was just renting it for a while,' the singer began. 'I parked my car there, literally in the driveway, and I came back and it was gone.' Guy told radio host Smallzy his car - 'bought on eBay' - was illegally towed by a dodgy company and taken to an undisclosed location without telling him. The company was attempting to exploit a loophole in the law, which allowed them to sell impounded cars if they were not claimed by the owner within three months. 'Police told me the car had been taken by a tow company. So I'm going from tow company to tow company, over three or four weeks,' Guy said. 'Eventually I went to the police for the third time, after I'd been to 20 or 30 tow companies. I said it's a needle in a haystack. So they marked it as stolen which alerted the tow company. 'I go to pick it up and they charge me $4,000USD. It's a scam that they do.' Guy had been renting the Australian Olympic swimmer's two-bedroom hideaway in the Hollywood Hills, located behind West Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard. Upon picking up his car from the impound lot, Guy called police to notify them that the car was no longer missing or stolen. After 45 minutes of being left on hold, Guy decided to drive to a local car wash while he waited to speak to police. 'I pick up this car. It's all damaged from the tow thing. I'm livid. I hop in this car and head down to the car wash because the sheriff is up the road,' he continued. 'I thought, "Bugger it, I'll go there after I wash this car". Didn't think anything of it. One police car pulls up in the next wash bay. 'I'm still on the phone to the sheriff and I see another one pulls up. Next minute there's eight or nine cops with their guns drawn, screaming: "SHUT UP AND GET ON THE GROUND!"' The car was still showing in the police system as stolen, as Guy had yet to get through to change that status. 'I'm on Bluetooth in my car and one cop pulls the phone out and throws the phone, smashing it. It was like a movie,' Guy said, able to laugh about the incident now. Guy attempted to notify officers that it was a misunderstanding and that he had the correct paperwork on the front seat and was on hold to police, but they refused to let him talk. 'He actually had the gun pressed into my forehead. It was full on. I could feel the metal of the gun,' Guy said, as another officer apparently told him to 'relax'. 'I was telling them it's my car. They wouldn't hear it. They put me in cuffs, pushing my face into this wet concrete.' Guy said he was eventually let go after his paperwork was checked and cleared, and said he understood why the police needed to act the way they did.

Ed Sheeran accidentally confirms return to Australia as fans brace for another record-breaking tour
Ed Sheeran has accidentally let slip that he'll be returning to Australia in early 2026 - three years after his record breaking tour Down Under. The British hitmaker, 34, made the casual revelation in a TikTok comment this week, setting off a frenzy among fans already preparing for the next stadium spectacular. The tour bombshell was picked up by Nova 96.9 radio host Smallzy who shared the exchange to his Instagram Story with the hilarious caption: 'BRB selling organs to buy concert tickets'. In the now-viral TikTok, a fan asked the singer: 'How does coming back to Australia soon sound to you?' Ed, without skipping a beat, replied: 'Start of 2026'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. While no official announcement has been made, Daily Mail Australia reached out to the star's management team - who didn't deny the claim but teased that something major is coming. 'We aren't in the habit of pre-announcing announcements – but there will be news on our plans for 26 later this summer,' a spokesperson said. It comes as Sheeran continues to trek across Europe on his Mathematics Tour, which first kicked off in Dublin in 2022 and is currently selling out stadiums in Madrid and beyond. The multi-platinum artist last performed in Australia in 2023, where he made headlines for smashing attendance records. Since then, the father-of-two has continued to drop new music, including the emotional tracks Azizam and Old Phone, rumoured to be featured on his eighth studio album. With smash hits like Shape of You, Perfect and Photograph each pulling in more than two billion Spotify streams, Sheeran remains one of the most successful artists of his generation. He currently boasts 90 million monthly listeners on the platform, making him the third-most followed artist globally. Over the years, the former busker-turned-global superstar has collaborated with music royalty including Adele, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Beyoncé - cementing his place in pop history. It comes after last week Ed shared a series of throwback snaps to Instagram, including a fun selfie with Taylor Swift, while also reflecting on his copyright trial. The star launched a new Instagram account to celebrate his 'emotional' new single Old Phone. The account featured a number of never-before-seen pictures, texts, and lyric notes, and came ahead of the release of his new single on Thursday April 29. Ed was inspired to write the new song when revisiting his old phone during the copyright lawsuit around his hit single Thinking Out Loud. At the time, Ed denied he had ripped off Marvin Gaye's soul classic Let's Get it On for his 2014 hit song, and in 2023 was cleared in court. Explaining the new account, Ed penned in a new Instagram post: 'Put the sound on and have a listen. I got rid of my phone 2015, and moved onto email full time. I just turned my phone off December '15 and that was it. 'When I got sued, the judge ordered me to give up my old devices to the other sides lawyers, to look through messages, emails, voice notes, videos, etc, to see if there was anything on there to help their case. In the process, I switched on my old phone. It comes after last week Ed shared a series of throwback snaps to Instagram while also reflecting on his copyright trial 'The first message was from my friend Jamal Edwards, who had recently passed away. The second was from my ex girlfriend who I hadn't been in contact with for years. The third was a family member I haven't spoken to in a decade. And so on.' Ed shared pictures with pals including Taylor and the late Jamal Edwards, with the musician admitting looking through the phone made him emotional for a number of reasons. Ed continued: 'It felt like a time capsule, a time of life that I was in, and living at that time in 2015. Turning it on really spun me out, I found myself scrolling messages and conversations with people who are no longer here. 'I found myself crying at messages to friends who are now dead, who I won't get to speak to again. I found old photos of me with people I was so close to then, but we've lost touch since. 'The whole experience was such an emotional journey. I wrote the song Old Phone on my own at 2am whilst jet lagged in India finishing the album, and recorded it that morning. It feels like a song that should've been on my debut album, but also a song I couldn't have written until I experienced real life things happening to me.' Speaking on the meaningful new song, Ed added: 'It makes me emotional to sing, I hope it finds some emotion in you too.'
