Smart electricity meters incoming: What you need to know
Mogale City Local Municipality (MCLM) is rolling out the implementation of a Smart Electricity Metering Project this July, which forms part of a National Treasury transversal contract.
MCLM communications officer Refilwe Mahlangu said the project is designed to enhance service delivery and ensure residents are able to view their electricity usage and make informed decisions on electricity spend.
The first phase of the project will be the physical audit of meters. Auditors will thus come to areas to assess the state of the people's meter infrastructure.
She asked residents to keep the following in mind:
• If your meter is inside your property, please allow the auditor access to your home
• The auditor will not change anything on your existing meter box; they are only there to assess its state
• Your access to power will not be affected during the audit
• The auditor will collect the meter condition, location, type, the municipal account holder's details and the account number
'Once the audit process is done, MCLM will begin replacing prepaid meters with new smart meters. This project is the first step towards improved service delivery.
