Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Wedding Photographer Reveals Unseen Photo—and How He Wrangled the Royal Kids
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It seems like yesterday that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot at St. George's Chapel in Windsor, but on Monday, May 19, the couple celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary. The Duchess of Sussex marked the occasion by posting some never-before-seen photos of herself with Prince Harry, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet on Instagram—but another person who took part in the couple's big day also revealed a rare photo. Celebrity photographer Alexi Lubomirski, who also took Harry and Meghan's engagement portraits, shared a TikTok divulging his secrets to capturing the perfect royal wedding photos. The photography pro admitted that it "was scary to say the least" to be asked to take such "historic" wedding portraits. "Nobody knew I was going to do the engagement pictures, so there was no pressure," he explained. "With this one, they announced everybody before." Lubomirski said he'd "constantly get messages on Instagram" ahead of the big day telling him "don't screw it up." Lubomirski and his wife attended Harry and Meghan's ceremony as guests, since he wasn't photographing the wedding itself. Afterward, he headed to the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle for the formal photos—but not before getting some good advice from a royal nanny. "Before Meghan came in, I heard the kids, the pageboys and the bridesmaids, and these were young children and of course they were getting bored and misbehaving," he said. "And one of the nannies said to them, 'If you're good, you're gonna get Smarties!'" "For some reason that stuck in my head," Lubomirski added. Before it came time to take the official portraits, the photographer asked Prince Harry for any advice on photographing the Royal Family—and he said it was all down to his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. "You know, they're very old, they've taken so many pictures in their life," the Duke of Sussex told Lubomirski. "If you don't get it quickly they're going to just move out." With this in mind, the photographer tried to gather everyone as quickly as possible, comparing the mood to "a Thanksgiving family event when you're trying to get kids to come in for a group photo." When they were running about five minutes behind, Lubomirski apologized to Queen Elizabeth and she replied, "It's not me you need to worry about," referring to Prince Philip. But when things got hectic, it was the nanny's comment that saved the day. "At one point, none of the kids were looking at me," Lubomirski said. "They're all running around and I could see the [late] Queen shuffling in her seat. So I suddenly shouted, 'Who likes Smarties?'" The line was a hit. "Harry suddenly said 'me!' and everyone laughed and smiled," the photographer recalled. Lubomirski went on to share some of the portraits he took from the day, including one outtake that didn't make the cut. In the photo, Meghan and Harry are sitting on the same steps in the castle's rose garden where one of their official wedding photos was taken, but both the duke and duchess are looking down at their hands. "It was their first moment as a married couple where they were just alone and there was this sense of relief and beauty and joy and they just slumped on the stairs," he said.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's Wedding Photographer Reveals the Palace's Warning to Guests: 'The World Can Lip Read'
Alexi Lubomirski, who took the official portraits at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's engagement and wedding, shared the warning he received from Windsor Castle guards before entering the nuptials He said he and other guests were told, "Ladies and gentlemen, please be careful what you are saying to each other because the world can lip read" Lubomirski shared more behind-the-scenes details from the wedding and engagement, including his inspiration for photos and one of his favorite images of the couple Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding photographer is sharing some insight into their engagement and royal nuptials with a TikTok series timed to their anniversary. Alexi Lubomirski, who took the official portraits for the couple's 2017 engagement and 2018 wedding, shared two videos on Monday, May 19, detailing his path to becoming Harry and Meghan's photographer. In the second TikTok, which included details of the wedding day photo shoot, Lubomirski revealed the warning he received before he and his wife entered Windsor Castle for Harry and Meghan's wedding. That day, Lubomirski said, guards were stationed outside of the castle gates, where they greeted all guests with the message: "Ladies and gentlemen, please be careful what you are saying to each other because the world can lip read." Lubomirski told his followers, "As you walk in, you see a lot of people sort of talking like this," with his hand covering his mouth. He added, "You don't know what you're talking about, but everyone on these cameras is watching and lip-reading." Lubomirski was tasked with photographing Harry and Meghan, plus their families, in Windsor Castle after the wedding ceremony. He explained in his TikTok that he had asked Harry for tips about photographing his family and was told to be quick for Queen Elizabeth and King Charles, who had already sat through countless royal photo shoots over the years. The photographer said he wanted to "break away" from the "stiff" feel of other royal group portraits, and instructed some family members to sit while others stood for the group photo. His secret weapon, however, was the British candy Smarties. After hearing a nanny telling children during the ceremony that they would be treated to candy if they behaved for the wedding, Lubomirski knew he'd get a smile out of the group if he mentioned Smarties during the shoot. After the group photo, Lubomirski was able to capture the first moment when Harry and Meghan were alone and away from the crowds after the ceremony. "There was this sense of relief and beauty and joy, and they just slumped on the stairs and I got this picture," he said, referring to a black-and-white image of Harry and Meghan from their wedding day. Lubomirski went back to the very beginning with the first video in his TikTok series, which explained how he received a surprise phone call from Kensington Palace asking him to meet Harry and Meghan, after which he was officially asked to take their engagement photos. He wanted to capture less formal images of Meghan and Harry, so he took some photos inside of Frogmore Cottage first to "loosen" up the couple, then moved outside into a "beautiful" November day for the rest of the photos. Lubomirski said he was particularly inspired by a photo of Audrey Hepburn and Mel Ferrer in which Hepburn is wrapped in her husband's coat, and he asked Harry and Meghan to take a similar photo — which eventually got "billions and billions of views," he said. "There was this moment of laughter between them, and it was so beautiful," Lubomirski said, adding, "I was so excited to get that picture." Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? to get the latest updates on Kate Middleton, Meghan Markle and more! The Funny Hack That Kept Kids Well Behaved During Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's Wedding
"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Yesterday, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary, and while the royals themselves shared some never-before-seen moments from their love story, they weren't the only one with a nostalgic secret to share. Alexi Lubomirski, who took the couple's official wedding portraits after the ceremony, as well as their engagement pics, took to TikTok to share a bit about the big day, including one behind-the-scenes tip he picked up from an unexpected source. During the ceremony, which he attended as a guest as he wasn't photographing the service itself, Lubomirski explained that there was a bit of tension among some of the younger members of the wedding party. "Before Meghan came in, I heard the kids, the pageboys and the bridesmaids, and these were young children and of course they were getting bored and misbehaving," he said. "And one of the nannies said to them, 'If you're good, you're gonna get Smarties!'" The bit of bribery stuck in his head, and it turned out to be a fortunate thing, too, as it came in handy later in the day. Following the wedding, Lubomirski joined the royal family in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle to take formal portraits, where Harry advised him to be speedy with his grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, telling him, "If you don't get it quickly they're going to just move out." Of course, in some respects, the royal family is just like any other family, and getting everyone settled in for photos proved a challenge. "At one point, none of the kids were looking at me," Lubomirski said. "They're all running around and I could see the [late] Queen shuffling in her seat. So I suddenly shouted, 'Who likes Smarties?' Harry suddenly said 'me!' and everyone laughed and smiled." The possibility of sweet treats worked, and the photographer was able to capture the historic day—including one previously unseen image that he shared toward the end of his TikTok of Harry and Meghan in the rose garden. "It was their first moment as a married couple where they were just alone and there was this sense of relief and beauty and joy and they just slumped on the stairs."
