Indian sports wrap, June 8: Anirban Lahiri leads heading into final round at LIV Golf Virginia
GOLF Lahiri up 2 entering final round at LIV Golf Virginia Pursuing his first individual win with LIV Golf, Anirban Lahiri of India played a bogey-free second round at 7-under 64 on Saturday and holds a two-shot lead at LIV Golf Virginia on Saturday in Gainesville, Va. A runner-up four times with LIV Golf, Lahiri sank seven birdies and made a 39-foot par putt on No. 16, then finished strong with a par on No. 18 after landing in the rough. On the 18th, he had to get up and down from a distance of more than 100 yards. 'Yeah, those felt like birdies as well,' Lahiri said of his impressive finish to the day at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. 'I think the first 15 holes was about as solid as I could have played. I missed a few putts and I still made quite a lot of birdies. Then 16, I was trying to hit like an in-between 9-iron and I tried to compress it a little bit too much, and everyone else saw what happened. It was nice to make that putt.' Veterans Bubba Watson, Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell—who are also chasing their first individual LIV Golf win—are at 9-under par entering Sunday's final round, just two shots behind the leader. On the team front, Lahiri and Bryson DeChambeau have the Crushers GC at 21 under par, one up on McDowell's Smash GC squad and well ahead of the other foursomes. -Reuters Diksha stays within top 10 after third round Indian golfer Diksha Dagar carded an even par 72 to hold her position within the top 10 after the third round of the Tenerife Women's Open at Abama Golf. Diksha was five-under for three days and is placed sole 9th in the standings. She is three shots behind the leader Sara Kouskova (69) at eighth-under. The other Indian to make the cut in Tenerife, Avani Prashanth, played an even par third round and is now placed at 43rd on the leaderboard. Diksha started her day with a birdie on the first hole before dropping shots on the sixth and eighth holes by the time she was hallway through the round. On the back nine, Diksha picked up a shot on the 10th hole before dropping one back on the 13th and picking up one more on the 16th to make sure she is still placed in the Top-10. Avani started her round with back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th holes and then dropped a double bogey on the 16th. On the front nine she dropped two more shots on the first hole with another double bogey before picking them back up on the third and sixth holes. She would drop a shot immediately on the seventh and then birdie the eighth to close the day with a par score on a roller-coaster day. -PTI

Talor Gooch Asterisk Notion Surfaces after Quitting US Open Qualifying
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. In the world of golf, Rory McIlroy has achieved something close to GOAT status. As one of the sport's biggest names, anything he does or chooses not to do becomes headline news. Just like his recent decision to avoid speaking to the media for four consecutive days, despite being known for his strong opinions. That happened during the second major at Quail Hollow, where the green jacket winner had an unimpressive finish. Now, all eyes turn to the U.S. Open next month. But if McIlroy does win the event, there might be an "asterisk beside it," per LIV Golf's Talor Gooch. Talor Gooch walks out of U.S. Open qualifying On May 19th, Talor Gooch abruptly walked off the course for U.S. Open qualifying with three holes to play. He earned a DNF, as he likely knew advancing was beyond his reach. Golf fans wasted no time mocking him, especially given his previous "asterisk" comment about McIlroy. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images) More Getty Images Back in 2024, when McIlroy was still chasing his Masters victory to complete the career Grand Slam, Gooch was quick to suggest that if he won, it would come with an "asterisk." Here's the full Gooch quote: "If Rory McIlroy goes and completes his [career] grand slam without some of the best players in the world, there's just going to be an asterisk. It's just the reality. I think everybody wins whenever the majors figure out a way to get the best players in the world there." Although McIlroy later gave Gooch the "benefit of the doubt", the comment sent the golf world into a frenzy, and now, the conversation has reignited. Gooch becomes a laughing stock among golf fans As soon as the news broke, fans flooded social media with reactions. NUCLR Golf posted on X: "This year's U.S. Open will have an asterisk beside it as LIV Golf star Talor Gooch will not be in the field after walking off the course with 3 holes to play at final qualifying. He DNF." 🚨*️⃣🇺🇸 #NEW — This year's U.S. Open will have an asterisk beside it as LIV Golf star Talor Gooch will not be in the field after walking off the course with 3 holes to play at final qualifying. He DNF. — NUCLR GOLF (@NUCLRGOLF) May 20, 2025 One user responded with an iconic meme GIF from Goodfellas, while others pointed out Gooch's lack of major success: "He has 1 career win (RSM Classic) when he played on tour." Compared to other players who successfully qualify for majors, Gooch's record doesn't stack up. Another fan sarcastically referenced Greg Norman's past praise of Gooch, posting: "Best iron player in the game over last 20 years, they said." The result? Heavy criticism of Norman for his exaggerated claims. And the roasting didn't stop there! One golf fan hilariously posted: "Can't call yourself a major if Talor's not in the field." All told, McIlroy moved into legendary status last month while Gooch remains mostly irrelevant in the golf world. Bryson DeChambeau wins LIV Korea as teenager Doyle does Cork double
The reigning US Open champion carded a six-under 66 to Howell's blistering 63 to win the individual title by two shots as his Crushers edged past Smash GC to win the team title. "Charles and I had a great battle out there," said DeChambeau, who finished on 19-under. "He never wavered today. It was fun, and we had a great time today, but it was intense. Super-intense." Talor Gooch was third on 14 under, while Graeme McDowell tied for 20th on four under after a closing 70 to help Smash GC finish second in the team battle. Jon Rahm's Legion XIII quartet finished joint fifth with Holywood's Tom McKibbin 47th in the 54-man field on four-over after a 72. In amateur golf, John Doyle (17) won at Cork Golf Club for the second time in the nine days when he made eight birdies in a sensational six-under 66 to win the Munster Stroke Play Championship by a shot. After claiming a wire-to-wire win in the Irish Boys Amateur Open, the Fota Island star was two shots off the lead after 36 holes and five behind Dundalk's Eoin Murphy with a round to play after a third round 73. But he saved the best for last at Little Island in the afternoon, sandwiching a lone double bogey six at the eighth between birdies at the first, second, fourth, sixth, 11th, 12th, 13th and 17th in a joint-best of the week, six-under 66. He won by a shot on six-under 282 from Knock's Ross Latimer, who bogeyed the last for a 70, and Murphy, who shot 72. Co Sligo's TJ Ford was fifth on 284 after a final round 70 while Carton House's Keith Egan closed with a 66 to finish a shot further back in fifth alongside Portmarnock's James Temple. Co Louth's Stuart Grehan followed rounds of 71, 71 and 70 with a 74 to finish seventh on two-under as defending champion Paul Coughlan took seven on level par. ADVERTISEMENT 'It feels nearly better than the first,' Doyle said of his win. 'I'm just really, really happy to have won this. 'It was different to last week because I had a five-shot deficit instead of a five-shot lead, so I was chasing a lot. I'm just really happy that I was aggressive, and it paid off for me. It's just a really good round to be fair.' In the 59th Lytham Trophy, Malone's Matthew McClean (31) finished tied for third behind Frenchman Hugo Lee Goff at Royal Lytham and St Annes. The former US Mid-Amateur champion followed a level par 70 in round three with a closing 73 to tie with Scotland's Andrew Davidson, England's Max Hopkins and Welshman Matt Roberts on eight-over 288. They were three strokes behind recently crowned Spanish Amateur Open winner Le Goff, who followed a morning 72 with a four-under 66 to win by one stroke from Lindrick's Tom Osborne on five-over 285. Athenry's Davit Kitt was joint 14th on 294 with Connemara's Luke O'Neill (295) tied 17th, Dundalk's Caolan Rafferty (297) joint 22nd, Edmondstown's Thomas Abom (301) tied 34th and Co Sligo's Aodhagan Brady (304) joint 40th.

LIV Golf Korea: Bryson DeChambeau fends off Charles Howell for individual win
INCHEON, South Korea — Crushers GC Captain Bryson DeChambeau finally converted a 36-hole lead into a LIV Golf victory on Sunday. His teammate Charles Howell III, though, didn't make it easy for him. DeChambeau countered Howell's final-round 9-under 63 with a 6-under 66 in a spirited back-nine final-group duel to win the individual title by two shots at LIV Golf Korea presented by Coupang Play. His Crushers made it a sweep of the trophies at Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea by rallying past Smash GC to win the team title. "Charles and I had a great battle out there," said DeChambeau, who finished at 19 under. "He never wavered today. It was fun and we had a great time today, but it was intense. Super-intense." [MORE: What is LIV Golf? Format, everything to know about the 2025 season] The individual victory is DeChambeau's third in LIV Golf, but his first since 2023 – and his first after entering the final round with the lead. Recent Sundays have ended in disappointment, both in the previous two LIV Golf events in Miami and Mexico City in which DeChambeau led after 36 holes, as well as last month's Masters in which he led with 16 holes left. He entered Sunday with a healthy four-shot lead, but Howell – starting the day five back – opened with three consecutive birdies and was four under at the turn. Meanwhile, DeChambeau suffered his only bogey of the week at the par-4 sixth and made the turn at even par, his lead reduced to one. While other players sought to make some noise — 4Aces GC's Thomas Pieters birdied five of his first six holes while Smash's Talor Gooch finished strong – the individual title eventually came down to the two Crushers teammates and close friends. Both turned up the heat on the back nine, with DeChambeau making birdies on four of his next six holes while Howell strung together five consecutive birdies. With three holes remaining, the two were tied at 17 under. But Howell suffered his only bogey of the day after his tee shot found a fairway bunker at the 16th. DeChambeau followed by creating some much-needed breathing room at the 17th, rolling in a 48-foot birdie putt at the 17th before letting out a roar and pumping his fists, a celebration that had been building since his recent near-misses. DeChambeau then managed to stay out of trouble – barely – with his tee shot at the par-5 18th, ending the round with a birdie and a big sigh of relief. "I feel like I've been playing some great golf, but I just haven't gotten the job done," DeChambeau said. "That was a lot of tension. Just glad I was able to step up to the plate and get it done. … I was personally pretty nervous on the front nine for whatever reason. … Finally, on 17, the bubble burst and I felt really good." For Howell, the performance confirms that he's all the way back from the stress fracture in his left tibia that knocked him out of action for three months in the middle of last season. The solo second is his first podium result since winning in Mayakoba to start the 2023 season. "I knew today would be a tough day to catch Bryson and even to try to beat him, but I gave it my best," Howell said. "I definitely would've thought 9-under would have done it, and clearly it didn't. … Any time you shoot 9-under par in the last group, and you still don't win, it's a tough day." Said DeChambeau: "I'm so proud of Chuckie, the way he fought out there today. Seeing that type of grit, oh my gosh, that's why I have him on the team. That's why I love every one of them." The other two Crushers also showed plenty of grit. Paul Casey opened with a 4-over 76 but shot 71-67 over the weekend to tie for 29th. Anirban Lahiri shot a 72 on Sunday, rebounding from his 79 the day before that included a horrible break when an approach shot bounced off the flagstick and rolled across the green into a water hazard, resulting in a double bogey and derailing his momentum. As a team, the Crushers shot 20 under on Sunday, 12 shots better than any other foursome in the final round, to win by nine shots over Smash. "I really wanted to get on that podium for the team," Lahiri said. "I had a tough weekend, but Paul and I were both grinding out there." Added Casey: "Charles and Bryson won this for us. Our job was to not mess it up, if I'm being honest." DeChambeau was also honest when asked about his team's first victory of this season. "The future's bright for the Crushers," he said. "I'm just excited to be part of this story. This is so awesome. That's what LIV is all about."
