Tigers announce addition of former Dodgers pitcher

The Detroit Tigers are looking for any way to bolster their pitching staff as they head towards a postseason run. While there will be plenty of trade talks over the next few weeks, the Tigers went out and signed a free agent to a deal for depth purposes. According to Steve Adams of MLB Trade the Tigers have agreed to sign Devin Smeltzer to a minor league deal and release Manuel Margot in a corresponding move. The 29-year-old pitched in just nine games for Miami with a 6.45 ERA. A year ago in 2024, Smeltzer pitched in 24 games in Triple-A and had a 3.69 ERA through 31.2 innings with 32 strikeouts and 13 walks. Smeltzer was later traded with other players to the Minnesota Twins for Brian Dozier. Advertisement Smeltzer spent the bulk of his time in the Majors with the Twins, where across four seasons, he had a 3.99 ERA in 34 appearances from 2019 to 2022. He struck out 96 batters and walked 37 during his time in Minnesota. While not the most prominent reliever, he was a decent piece during his time in the Majors, contributing 1.6 WAR in four years with the Twins. Now, he's heading to Detroit's minor league system to potentially work his way back to the majors. The former Dodgers, Twins, and Marlins lefty reliever is looking to make it back to the majors. With the Tigers looking to add more depth to their bullpen, Smeltzer could see a spot in the Majors if he pitches well in Triple-A. MORE MLB NEWS:

Locals, tourists honor the fallen at Beaufort National Cemetery

BEAUFORT, S.C. (WSAV) — Whether they know a veteran who laid down their life, or not, hundreds of folks gathered on Beaufort's National Cemetery grounds Monday to pay their respect back to those who sacrificed their tomorrows for our todays. Lowcountry residents and tourists made their way to the national cemetery in Beaufort to watch the Memorial Day ceremony. Once the ceremony was wrapped, several folks ventured off to explore the grounds. Many took the time to thank the tens of thousands of soldiers buried beneath the soil; many of whom lost their life in action. 'This day means everything that we have here in this country. Our freedoms, everything that the people who came before us fought for to preserve for us,' said Robert Smeltzer. Smeltzer traveled in from Summerville to visit his father buried in the cemetery. Ray Richards, a member of the South Carolina Patriot Guard Riders, which is a national volunteer organization that honors Veterans by standing at their funeral, said they were a part of many burials at Beaufort National Cemetery, so paying their respects back on Memorial Day was important to them. 'They're the ones that have stood up for us and helped keep America free. So, we're here just to honor them and their family and respect the service they gave our nation,' Richards said. Several folks said the meaning of today can get lost in a day off work, parties, and celebrations, but the true meaning has always been to honor the ones who gave the ultimate sacrifice. 'Don't forget what this day is all about. The reason why we are free to talk as we are right here is because of those who served,' said Smeltzer. Bruce Holden, who also traveled in to pay his respects, added, 'It's all for America. The United States, our Constitution, freedom and liberty.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Centre County Emergency Management urges residents to use new emergency alert system

CENTRE COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A new emergency mass notification service called ALERTCentre is providing reliable and faster notifications to residents during emergency events. ALERTCentre is provided by Rave Mobile Safety, a Motorola company. The Centre County Emergency Management, in cooperation with Centre County 911 Emergency Communications, has implemented the new service for its speed, reliability, and accuracy during the emergency events. 'This gives them advanced warning to hopefully make emergency movement to put themselves in a protective area,' Deputy Director for Emergency Management Domer Smeltzer said. Centre County DA confirms 22 Penn State students' visas revoked ALERTCentre will notify residents of missing people, floods, evacuations, shelter in place, broadcast wanted fugitives, active violence incidents, and any other life-threatening critical emergencies. 'Our biggest thing in Centre County is flooding events. So the different areas that are prone to flooding, this will give us an opportunity if we see the water is going to start rising quickly, and that we can get this alert to them and allow them to evacuate before it gets too bad,' Smeltzer said. When receiving alerts, it's based on the address of the incident. 'Each municipality in Centre County is has designated boundaries. So if we need to send it to a specific municipality, we can. This could be as much as county-wide, right down to two or three homes if we needed to,' Smeltzer said. Smeltzer added that areas with large gatherings, such as the Centre County Grange Fairgrounds, have their own boundaries. He says that the wide-open space and the number of people getting alerts out gives them a chance to take cover. Enrollment for the service is completely free and totally voluntary. By self-enrolling, residents will have the ability to build a custom dataset with information about their residence and families. All information entered into ALERTCentre by residents is private. To sign up you can go to the Centre County Smart911 website. You have the option to select the method you want to use to receive the alert. Smeltzer says trying to get as many people signed up as possible is crucial. This will help residents receive information quicker, help responders if someone is in danger, and more.
