Something for the Weekend: Adam Matthews' cultural picks

Adam Matthews is the vocalist with rising Dublin pop electro duo Phoeno, who have just released their latest single, Safety. The band's name comes from Dublin's iconic Phoenix Park. Adam and long-term musical collaborators Liam Corbett took to taking long runs together during the many Covid lockdowns - on these epic treks, they'd talk sounds, lyrics, themes... and thus Phoeno was born. We asked Adam for his choice cultural picks... FILM A recent film that blew me away and also stuck with me was Smile 2 (I also love the first one ) – but this film had everything, The director's choices have such a presence throughout the film – the set pieces are amazing and the film is carried expertly by Naomi Scott. The film follows an uber famous pop star, Skye Riley, so not only do we get the horror aspect of her being tormented by this freaky entity, we also get proper moments of original music - some staged for concert and also raw acoustic piano moments. They also released an EP on streamers to accompany the film! MUSIC I still have a CD player in my car so I make a habit of buying old albums in charity shops (when I say old I mean from the 2000's – albums I loved when they came out). The current album on rotation in my car is Feeder's Pushing the Senses – the production is so great and the lyrics never stop hitting me. Standout moment is Morning Life. More recently, Nerina Pallot's A Psalm for Emily Salvi is an ear feast. BOOK I won't even lie here – I love slasher movies and in a bid to beat the film adaptation release next week, I'm currently reading Clown in a Cornfield – fun and summery vibes! I can confirm the book delivers on its title, there is in fact a killer clown in a cornfield. THEATRE Thisispopbaby's variety extravaganza RIOT is back in Vicar Street this July (17th – 20th) - I am in this show with many stunning performers and a very good time is guaranteed! Tixckets are on sale as we speak! TV Dying for Sex on Hulu/ Disney Plus - I just finished watching this. It's a one season series and I have no idea why I don't hear people talking about it – you get some of the best acting from leads Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate, the directing is exquisite and the cinematography is gorgeous. You can really feel its authentic New York setting. GIG Phoeno are headlining The Workman's Cellar in Dublin on the 25th of this month – the only gig you need to hear about! ART I'm kinda fanatical about instant photography – I love taking photographs and love polaroid portraits, so I try to follow as many instant photographers as possible on Instagram. I'm learning how other people are working with polaroid and instax. PODCAST The Louis Theroux Podcast never fails to deliver and never disappoints - I loved listening to his recent chat with the always iconic Sharon Horgan. TECH A digital camera called Flashback – I supported it on Kickstarter. It basically works like a disposable camera; you unload your 'roll' of film to the app on your phone and after 24 hours you get an alert to say your roll of film is ready to view. The photos looks incredibly similar to the ones a real 35mm camera would give you. THE NEXT BIG THING... We're in a golden age for Irish music and Irish art. Our culture is the next big thing, and we want Phoeno to be front and centre in that cultural wave.

‘Novocaine' now streaming on Paramount+ with 81% Rotten Tomatoes score

Jack Quaid's action-thriller Novocaine is now officially streaming on Paramount+, following a successful theatrical run and strong critical reception. The film, which holds an 81% critic score and an 85% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, was directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen from a script by Lars Jacobson. Novocaine stars Quaid as Nathan Caine, a mild-mannered bank employee who can't feel pain due to a rare medical condition. When his co-worker and love interest Sherry (played by Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped during a bank heist, Caine embarks on a relentless, pain-defying mission to rescue her. The cast also includes Ray Nicholson (Smile 2), Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man: No Way Home), and Matt Walsh (Veep). Originally released on March 14, Novocaine topped the box office during its opening weekend, earning $8.8 million. Despite modest earnings, the film became one of the lowest-grossing No. 1 openers post-2020, ultimately reaching $34.2 million globally against an $18 million budget. Quaid celebrated the film's streaming debut with behind-the-scenes photos on Instagram, calling Novocaine 'a brutally fun ride' and encouraging fans to tune in on Paramount+. The Boys star continues to have a busy year. His sci-fi film Companion is also a streaming hit on Max, with a 93% critic score. Additionally, Quaid stars in Neighborhood Watch, now available digitally, alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Malin Akerman. Novocaine adds to Jack Quaid's growing list of critically praised roles, solidifying his status as one of 2025's most in-demand action and thriller stars.

BREAKING NEWS Jack Nicholson's son Ray has lost his dog as pals Paris Hilton and Hailey Bieber join search for missing pooch

Jack Nicholson 's son Ray is in crisis mode after his beloved dog vanished — and now Hollywood's elite are stepping in to help. The 33-year-old Smile 2 star's supermodel girlfriend Sara Sampaio took to Instagram on Tuesday to reveal that their beloved pup Mongo had gone missing on April 28. Posting a LOST flyer featuring the tiny runaway, Sara pleaded with fans: 'HELP!!!! REWARD! No questions ask! Please help, mongo escape our fence and we can't find him. We are desperate to find him. Please please help us.' The Portuguese stunner, 33, — who's been dating Ray since 2023 — added: 'He's very small and friendly. He's probably scared. He's everything to me!' A few hours later, she updated fans via Facebook, writing: 'Mongo is still missing' and warned locals: 'PLEASE DONT CHASE AFTER HIM. Trying to keep movement in that area to a minimum to see if he feels safe to come out and doesn't run away into other areas.' Tinseltown quickly rallied behind the couple, with Paris Hilton reposting the alert and Hailey Bieber sharing it to her Stories, urging her millions of followers: 'please help find Mongo.' Director James Gunn and actress Brenda Son also reached out in the comments section. Ray and Sara made their red carpet debut at Vanity Fair's Oscar party in March 2024. SInce then, Sara hasn't been shy about flaunting their romance online — gushing in a February Instagram post, 'My valentine how did I get so lucky?' alongside a series of sweet snaps with Ray. The heartbreaking dog drama comes not long after Ray opened up about a bizarre and 'traumatic' childhood run-in with Kobe Bryant during a Lakers game. The actor, who's often spotted courtside with his legendary dad, 87-year-old Jack Nicholson, recalled the moment on a March episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! — revealing he was 'pantsed' by the late NBA icon and teammate Nick Van Exel when he was just a kid. 'I was with my best friend, Beau, who was also six, and Kobe Bryant and Nick Van Exel pantsed us. Pantsed us before the game,' he said. The two boys burst into tears afterward, prompting an apology from the players. 'They actually came up and apologized, and were like, 'No, you're a part of the team,'' Ray added. He also recalled another courtside moment from 2010, when 6'11' Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett tumbled into the front row and landed right on him — a lesson in NBA survival from his Oscar-winning father: 'You're sitting courtside, watch the player, not the ball.' Ray is the son of Jack and actress Rebecca Broussard, who dated the Chinatown star from 1989 to 1994. The iconic actor has six children with five different women.
