Panthers great Cam Newton reacts to Steve Smith Sr. scandal: He did scorned man a 'favor'

Panthers great Cam Newton reacts to Steve Smith Sr. scandal: He did scorned man a 'favor' While chatting with reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter from Super Bowl LIX's "Radio Row" three weeks ago, Carolina Panthers legend Cam Newton controversially referred to the first pro team he ever joined as a "locker room of losers." Those comments led to a bit of pushback from members of that 2010/2011 squad such as head coach Ron Rivera, offensive lineman Geoff Schwartz, defensive end Charles Johnson and, most notably, the franchise's all-time leading receiver Steve Smith Sr. And Smith Sr.'s fiery response to his ex-teammate's thoughts, remarkably enough, was only the second-wildest social media interaction he's had this month. Smith Sr. was recently caught up in a sex scandal, in which he was accused of having an extramarital affair with a former Baltimore Ravens band member. The man believed to be the husband of the woman Smith Sr., um, banded together with posted a series of text messages on Twitter/X this past weekend in an effort to reveal the affair. Since then, quite a few Panthers fans were probably waiting on Newton to react to the news on his weekly YouTube show. And, well, he delivered on Thursday's episode of 4th & 1 with Cam Newton . . . As of this writing, Smith Sr. himself has not commented on the accusations.

Steve Smith Sr.'s son responds to 'hate' after allegations about his dad

It's been a rough few days for the family of former NFL wideout Steve Smith Sr., to say the least. There are allegations about infidelity, with someone on X (formerly Twitter) accusing the former Carolina Panther and Baltimore Raven of having an affair with his wife. Smith Sr. hasn't responded directly since the accusations, but his son, Peyton Smith, wrote an Instagram post with this message: 'Your kind words and prayers are felt and appreciated. God's got us. I won't take much time feeding into the negativity, but to those sending hateful messages to my family, I hope you take time to reflect that you have nothing better to do with your day than to message hate to a stranger.'

Panthers all-time leading WR Steve Smith Sr. grades Xavier Legette's rookie season

So, what does the Carolina Panthers' all-time leading receiver think about the first season of the team's first-round wideout? Steve Smith Sr. teamed up with Underdog Network colleague James Palmer to review and grade the rookie campaign of Xavier Legette. And you can't talk about Legette's year without addressing his drops. 'I think he's lost a little bit of his confidence in catching the football because of the drops,' Smith Sr. stated. 'And you can see it sometimes in how he's attacking the football. He's attacking the football with his whole body, almost grasping at the football. And I know that because I too had struggled with confidence. 'Depending on the defender, depending on what happened during week, what's going on with the weather—there's a ton of things that impact your confidence that has nothing to do with a man's heart. It has to do, sometimes, with just being a human being.' Two of Legette's seven drops came in two big games—one against the then-reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the other against the current Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The latter, in fact, wiped out what would have been a game-tying touchdown in the final minute of the game. Smith Sr., however, offered an encouraging outlook for the soon-to-be second-year pass catcher. 'Based off of injuries, based off of what he did in college, you know and you can see that he's a young man that's learning, getting his feet wet in the National Football League, and I think he has a tremendous upside,' added Smith Sr., who gave Legette an overall 'C' grade. Legette finished up with 49 receptions for 497 yards and four touchdowns.

Panthers great Steve Smith Sr. seems to be angry with former teammate Cam Newton

Is there a beef cooking between two Carolina Panthers legends? The franchise's all-time leading passer Cam Newton has seemingly ruffled the feathers of the franchise's all-time leading receiver Steve Smith Sr. Newton, while joining reigning Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter at 'Radio Row' this past week, talked about the pressure of being a No. 1 overall pick of the NFL draft. And in doing so, he used a not-so-flattering title for his former teammates . . . Cam Newton hopped on Travis Hunters' show and dropped a GEM about being the #1 pick 💎@TravisHunterJr @CameronNewton — Overtime (@overtime) February 7, 2025 That 'losers' comment apparently didn't sit well with Smith Sr., who tweeted out the following on Monday: The Panthers selected Newton atop the 2011 draft after going a league-worst 2-14 in 2010. They weren't 'losers' for much longer, as Carolina went 12-4 in 2013 while capturing their first NFC South title in five years. That campaign would be the final one in Charlotte for Smith Sr., who was released by the Panthers during the 2014 offseason. Newton and the Panthers proceeded to win two more division crowns in the following two seasons, a run capped off by the franchise's first-ever Most Valuable Player Award (Cam) and their second-ever Super Bowl appearance. Smith Sr. played out the final three seasons of his NFL career with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring after the 2016 campaign. Perhaps Newton, who has praised Smith Sr. numerous times in recent years, wasn't directing the 'losers' label to him specifically. After all, can you guess who was a (big) part of the organization's first-ever Super Bowl team . . . ?

Panthers legend Steve Smith Sr. not named to Pro Football Hall of Fame's 2025 class

Carolina Panthers great Steve Smith Sr. will have to continue his pursuit of Canton, Ohio. The former wide receiver was not voted as one of the four inductees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2025. Smith Sr., a first-time finalist for football's greatest honor, was on his fourth year of eligibility. A third-round pick in the 2001 NFL draft, Smith Sr. played 13 of his 16 professional seasons in Carolina. He still stands as the organization's all-time leading receiver, as he amassed 12,197 yards and 67 touchdowns on 836 receptions for the Panthers. After parting ways with the team following the 2013 campaign, Smith Sr. finished out the final three years of his pro career with the Baltimore Ravens—adding 2,534 more yards, 14 more scores and 195 more catches. He is currently the eighth leading receiver (14,731 yards) in league history. Smith Sr. reeled in numerous honors over his time—including two first-team All-Pro selections, a second-team All-Pro selection and five Pro Bowl nods. He was also named the 2005 AP Comeback Player of the Year—a season in which he led the entire NFL in receptions (103), receiving yards (1,563) and receiving touchdowns (12).
