Panthers all-time leading WR Steve Smith Sr. grades Xavier Legette's rookie season
So, what does the Carolina Panthers' all-time leading receiver think about the first season of the team's first-round wideout?
Steve Smith Sr. teamed up with Underdog Network colleague James Palmer to review and grade the rookie campaign of Xavier Legette. And you can't talk about Legette's year without addressing his drops.
'I think he's lost a little bit of his confidence in catching the football because of the drops,' Smith Sr. stated. 'And you can see it sometimes in how he's attacking the football. He's attacking the football with his whole body, almost grasping at the football. And I know that because I too had struggled with confidence.
'Depending on the defender, depending on what happened during week, what's going on with the weather—there's a ton of things that impact your confidence that has nothing to do with a man's heart. It has to do, sometimes, with just being a human being.'
Two of Legette's seven drops came in two big games—one against the then-reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs and the other against the current Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. The latter, in fact, wiped out what would have been a game-tying touchdown in the final minute of the game.
Smith Sr., however, offered an encouraging outlook for the soon-to-be second-year pass catcher.
'Based off of injuries, based off of what he did in college, you know and you can see that he's a young man that's learning, getting his feet wet in the National Football League, and I think he has a tremendous upside,' added Smith Sr., who gave Legette an overall 'C' grade.
Legette finished up with 49 receptions for 497 yards and four touchdowns.

Josh Allen Performs 'Superman Act' In Bills' 'Best-Case' Scenario
Josh Allen Performs 'Superman Act' In Bills' 'Best-Case' Scenario originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The 2025 season presents the Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen with perhaps their best opportunity to reach the pinnacle of the NFL and win the Super Bowl. Advertisement Seen as one of only a handful of teams that can genuinely win the Lombardi trophy due to their well-rounded roster, the Bills are one of the teams to watch. But as we know, for a team to win the Super Bowl, they need to play well and when it matters, and they also need a little bit of luck on the injury front, too. For CBS Sports, in what they call a best-case scenario for the Bills in 2025, everything finally comes together for Allen. "Josh Allen's Superman act is even better supported by the growth of youngsters like James Cook, Keon Coleman and Dalton Kincaid, and Buffalo finally exorcises playoff demons to reach -- and win -- the Super Bowl," CBS Sports writes. Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen.© Ed Mulholland-Imagn Images If Cook can maintain his standards from last season, and Coleman and Kincaid can have bounce-back seasons, coupled with Allen being "Allen," then there is every reason to think that this might be Buffalo's year. Advertisement Of course, the NFL has a knack of knocking teams back down to earth at the most inopportune time, and let's not forget, it is a long regular season, too. Still, there's no denying Buffalo's talent on both sides of the ball, and if everything does come together as it should, then who knows, maybe the franchise will win its first-ever Super Bowl trophy. And if they do, Allen's "Superman act" might be a big reason why. The Chiefs ultimately suffered a loss in the Super Bowl while on their quest for a three-peat. They may have been unsuccessful at winning three straight Super Bowl titles, but Kansas City kept its roster intact for another potential run this season. During the offseason, while Patrick Mahomes was working through the processes of OTAs and mandatory minicamp, his wife, Brittany Mahomes, took to social media. Buffalo Power Ranking Is Only A Start for Josh Allen-Led Bills
Buffalo Power Ranking Is Only A Start for Josh Allen-Led Bills originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After another playoff loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane did everything he could to ensure they wouldn't have to endure another one. Advertisement Buffalo added several key free agents this offseason on both sides of the ball. With a league MVP in Josh Allen and a strong coaching staff, the Bills are expected to be among the top teams in the league again. So much so that NFL analyst Logan Ulrich has the Bills as the third-best team in his latest power rankings. "The Bills have everything they need to keep knocking, starting with QB Josh Allen, who earned MVP honors last season," Ulrich wrote. "Buffalo was able to replace Diggs in the aggregate, getting a breakout from new slot WR Khalil Shakir and contributions from a wide variety of players." Since Allen's arrival as a star, the Bills have had one of the best offenses in the league. As long as their defense can continue to perform at a high level, Buffalo should continue to be a championship contender. Advertisement The question will be whether they did enough to get by their rivals, the Chiefs. Buffalo has gotten the better of their conference rivals during the regular season but has not beaten Kansas City since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback. Buffalo is good enough to be a perennial playoff contender as presently constructed. But in terms of performance? Rankings and compliments are only a start. They'll need to do more on the field to reach their Super Bowl potential. … and to make offseason grades seem even more insignificant.
