Candlepin bowling returns to Worcester, and the Pacific Northwest gets a new upscale campground

Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Snow Peak Long Beach Campfield has opened on Washington state's Long Beach Peninsula, offering glamping tents, 'micro cabins,' a spa with a Japanese soaking pool and a cold plunge, and a gathering place called the 'Campstore' (pictured here), which hosts live music on Saturday nights and other events. HANDOUT Advertisement THERE Pacific Northwest's new upscale campground A new campground in one of Washington state's top beach towns suits those who prefer a more upscale camping experience or who don't want to schlep all their own gear here—perfect for travelers coming from afar. Snow Peak Long Beach Campfield, located on the southern (sandy) tip of Washington's coastline, offers glamping tents, 'micro cabins' and—an absolute highlight—the Ofuro Spa, an open-air covered structure with a Japanese soaking pool, a cold plunge, and a sauna overlooking a pond. The Japanese-owned camping area offers tent suites, which include spacious tents that fit up to four people and have camping cots, a table and chairs, and a camp kitchen with a propane stove, sink, and all dish- and cookware; Jyubako Suites, which look like wooden shipping containers with windows and come with a queen bed, bathroom, kitchenette with mini fridge, and climate control; and grassy camping spots throughout the 25-acre property where you can pitch your own tent. All Jyubako and tent suites come with their own firepit, and everything provided throughout the property (from the tents and grilling tools to the power banks for charging your devices) is made by the Japanese camping brand Snow Peak. Advertisement Snow Peak Long Beach Campfield has opened on Washington state's Long Beach Peninsula, offering glamping tents (pictured here), 'micro cabins,' and the onsite Ofuro Spa (an open-air covered structure with a Japanese soaking pool, a cold plunge, and a sauna overlooking a pond). HANDOUT The property has a lot to offer—a great café and lounge with regular live music, a camp store, immaculate and spacious bathrooms and showers, the spa, and beautiful grounds centered around a pond — but don't expect a private campsite: Most of the tent suites are lined up, side-by-side, in long rows (the theme throughout is creating community). Campfield is situated in a more residential area several miles from the beach, but offers quick access to Long Beach's restaurants (the grab-and-go Taiwanese dumplings from Formosa Bao are the best), Sid's Market (grocery store), and the miles and miles of sandy beach (yes, you can drive on the beaches here — without needing to deflate tires). It's located two hours from Portland, Ore., and from Seattle. The property hosts regular events, from forest bathing and cold plunges to the Snow Peak Campfield Sand Festival May 23-26. Rates (with two-night minimum) start at $59 for field sites, $149 for tent suites, and $249 for cabins; Ofuro day passes available for $35 per person. 833-662-7624, Advertisement Matador's new GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack works well as a carry-on or overnight bag that gives you easy access — from multiple entry points — to your travel items. HANDOUT EVERYWHERE A full-featured travel backpack Matador's new GlobeRider35 Travel Backpack works well as a carry-on or overnight bag that gives you easy access — from multiple entry points — to your travel items. Access the main compartment of the 35-liter bag through the zippered opening on top (handy while in transit) or use the side zipper to unzip three sides and open the bag like a traditional suitcase (handy once you reach your destination). The interior of the main compartment also has four zippered mesh pockets for organizing smaller items. The GlobeRider35 has a padded laptop sleeve that you can access from the outside (helpful for airport security lines) or the main compartment; a sturdy strap for slipping over your suitcase's telescoping handle; and plenty of grab handles for easy maneuvering. Shoulder and waist straps have a small amount of padding for comfort, yet aren't too bulky. The bag also has a stretchy pouch on the front for stashing a jacket or book and one on the side for holding a water bottle; a lined sunglass pocket on top; and a front zippered pocket for holding your passport, business cards, snacks, and other small items. $290. Snow Peak Campfield brings Japanese-style glamping to Washington

Advertisement Snow Peak Campfield's Jyubako suites feature private bathrooms and sitting areas – Photo courtesy of Snow Peak USA On a balmy summer's eve, my husband and I, along with our two pups, watched the sun go down from the deck of our Jyubako suite at Snow Peak Campfield. Nestled on Long Beach Peninsula in Washington state, this luxury glamping destination invites guests to connect with nature as reimagined through the lens of Snow Peak, a Japanese outdoor gear company best known for its high-end, minimalist camping equipment, accessories, and clothing. Snow Peak Campfield is the company's first camping destination in the U.S. We were looking for a spot to unwind and immerse ourselves in nature without having to completely 'rough it,' and Snow Peak Campfield — a few hours' drive from Seattle (as well as Portland, Oregon) — offered the perfect escape from urban noise. Here's what we loved about it. The Snow Peak Campfield experience Leave the hustle and bustle behind as you walk along the boardwalk into a car-free zone – Photo courtesy of Snow Peak USA After parking our car and checking in at the Gatehouse, we loaded our belongings into a lightweight wheelbarrow and walked across a boardwalk surrounded by tall grass. We felt as though we were crossing a bridge, leaving the everyday grind behind. Snow Peak Campfield, encompassing 25 acres of wilderness, is a car-free zone. Advertisement Tent suites are already set up for guests' convenience – Photo courtesy of Snow Peak USA Guests can choose from three types of lodging — tent suites, field sites, and Jyubako suites. Tent suites are spacious, two-person shelters that can accommodate up to four guests by adding sleeping pads. Each tent suite comes with classic Snow Peak accessories, including sleeping cots, cooking equipment, and a dining table with chairs. Snow Peak also offers field sites, where guests can bring their own gear and set up camp. Both tent suites and field sites have access to communal bathroom and shower facilities. We opted to stay in one of the Jyubako suites, or micro cabins, thoughtfully designed by renowned architect Kengo Kuma. These suites feature a queen bed, private bathroom, small living area, and kitchenette. Sleeping pads can be added to accommodate up to two children. I loved our private outdoor deck that overlooked the wilderness. In the afternoons, we would do yoga or settle in our camp chairs with a good book. Ofuro Spa is designed to resemble a Japanese bathhouse – Photo courtesy of Snow Peak USA One of Snow Peak Campfield's main draws is Ofuro Spa, which all overnight guests can enjoy as part of their experience. Designed to reflect traditional Japanese bathhouses, the open-air spa, constructed of hinoki cypress, features a heated soaking pool, sauna, and cold plunge pool. One of my favorite moments during our visit was relaxing in the soaking pool, surrounded by a grove of trees, and listening to the faint chirp of birds. If you're feeling up for adventure, there's plenty to explore. Downtown Long Beach is a short, five-minute drive, offering shops, restaurants, and a charming coastal boardwalk. There's hiking along Discovery Trail, and the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge, which spans 11,000 acres, offers ample opportunities for exploring old cedar forests, sand dunes, grasslands, and freshwater wetlands. Advertisement Bring Snow Peak home with you The Campstore is also a cozy place to hang out – Photo courtesy of Snow Peak USA Snow Peak Campfield's Campstore sells the brand's high-quality indoor and outdoor gear. You'll also find grab-and-go packaged food, condiments, and meat and produce for grilling on your takibi kit. If you're setting up camp at a field site, you can rent Snow Peak's products, which means you can travel light. By the time we wrapped up at Snow Peak Campfield, we were fans of their gear. Here are five items we love. Renewed Entry IGT The Renewed Entry IGT is collapsible – Photo courtesy of Snow Peak USA This table is similar to the one we used while staying at Snow Peak Campfield. It's efficient and easy to assemble, making it ideal for low-height food prep and eating. The bamboo inserts are lightweight and can be added to create a longer table. It folds flat and is perfect for road adventures.
