Canterbury preview: Peter Snowden's faith has been rewarded as a more mature Cassiel shines ahead of midweek target
Trainer Peter Snowden has always known the ability was there and while it has taken time for Cassiel to show it on race day, the gelding has delivered it in spades this preparation. Cassiel placed in three of his four runs last campaign but was his own worst enemy, according to Snowden. With maturity, the four-year-old has been much better this time in, leading all the way to score by more than a length from Apex when resuming at Canterbury on April 21 and backing it up with a two-and-a-half length win from Fly Scotty Fly at Hawkesbury four weeks later in a Benchmark 64 over 1100m with 61kg. 'He just wanted to go too hard and too quick in his races,' Snowden said. 'He is racing a lot more tractably and it is showing in his performances on race day. 'He's probably one of the best trackworkers I've ever had but come race day he just wanted to overdo it and [was] beating himself. 'Now, he is starting to learn to relax a lot better. 'He's not perfect but because he's relaxing more, he's able to find more at the end of his races. 'He will win a lot more races yet if he keeps going the way he is going.' 'He's definitely going the right way and you can't beat winning form,' Snowden said. 'It's a similar race for him this week and he looks well placed in that grade.' Lightly-raced three-year-old Braveheart is another who possess nice ability and is getting better with time and maturity. 'He is a full brother to King Of Sparta and there's no reason he can't be up to that grade at some stage,' he said. 'He is very lightly raced – he's only had a handful of starts – but every start he has had, he has shown something. 'He had a few little issues in the early days but we have ironed them out now and he is going very well. 'The family keeps getting better as they get older, there's no doubt about that, and I expect him to do the same. The son of I Am Invincible caught there eye with his strong closing third behind Axius on the Kensington first-up and is a leading chance in the Broadsiding @ Darley Handicap (1250m). His first-up run was very good and a similar sort of race this week should see him run very well again,' he said. 'He worked well on Saturday morning and is ready to go.' Snowden is keeping his options open as to whether Infusion makes her race debut at Canterbury in the TAB Handicap (1200m), goes to Gosford on Thursday or waits until next week. 'I just want to get her on the best track I can,' he said. 'She is more effective on good ground than soft so we will see what happens with the weather.' The three-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible has been good in her barrier trials including a nose second to proven performer Highlights after tracking him in the run in her latest heat at Canterbury on June 23. 'She is a nice filly; a big strong thing,' he said 'She had a few growing pains early and it has taken us a while to get her to the track. 'She has been trialling soundly and it was a very good trial at Canterbury at her last one against good company. She was very strong to the line.'

Daily Telegraph racing writer Mitch Cohen has analysed all the action from Saturday's Listed $200,000 Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens and found a few worth following. FIVE TO FOLLOW RAGING FORCE (1st, race 1) Punters saw the most exciting young galloper in the opener and he didn't disappoint, bringing up a hat-trick of wins this preparation in emphatic fashion. He's got stakes quality written all over him. A dominant win from Raging Force in the Rosehill opener - that's three from three, and he's living up to his name! ðŸ'¥ @TommyBerry21 @SnowdenRacing1 @Darby_Racing — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) July 5, 2025 POWDER MAN (2nd, race 3) It's now been back-to-back Highway runs where he's got back in the field and rocketed home, this time closing off strongly for second. If he can get the breaks, there's a Highway win in him soon. USEAPIN (6th, race 6) There is no doubt this filly should have finished a lot closer in her first run back from a freshen up after running into dead ends in the straight when she had plenty to offer. Stay with her. Bounced back in a big way from his tough Stradbroke Handicap run with an unlucky second in the Winter Stakes. He can go close next start, perhaps in a race like the Winter Challenge on Saturday week. SACRED ROCKS (2nd, race 10) The winner Brave One was excellent after racing three-wide throughout but don't drop off this mare either. She is a mare on an upward trajectory and tipping stakes races beckon for her in the future. He was found to be 3/5 lame in the near foreleg and will now be spelled. Lull (race 1): Found to be slow to recover post-race. Will undergo a veterinary and endoscopic examination before racing again. Sequista (race 1): Jockey Jason Collett could offer little explanation for the filly's disappointing finishing effort. She will now be spelled. Let's Go Brandon (race 3): After weakening in the straight, the gelding was found to have bled in both nostrils for the first time and is now banned from racing for three months. Tarpaulin (race 5): Slow to begin. Raced too keenly through the early and middle stages and jockey Rachel King felt it impacted his finishing effort. Fleet Commander (race 7): Jockey Josh Parr said near the 450m mark the gelding's action deteriorated and he became badly unbalanced so retired him from the race. The gelding was found to be stiff and short in its action. Whinchat (race 9): Fractious in the barriers before beginning awkwardly. Jockey Jay Ford reported he never travelled well, raced flat and was disappointing in the manner in which he finished off. He will now be spelled. CRUNCH TIME Raging Force (race 1): Settled in the box seat and unleashed a powerful last 600m of 34.08 seconds for the 1100m test. His closing splits of 11.16 and 11.45 were the clear best of the race. Powder Man (race 3): Didn't have a runner behind him at the 600m before closing off in a clear race-best 35.09 seconds from that point. His last 200m of 11.90 got him within a length of the winner Lordster. Brave One (race 10): Went back from a wide draw before making a long sustained run to win, clocking 35.70 seconds for his last 600m. Only fellow back marker Sacred Rocks (35.64) came home better but position in running was key. TRACK TALK 'I have been telling the jockeys, 'watch him going to the gates because he'll pull and be a bit ferocious' but at his first two runs back he has gone around to the start like a kid's pony. Today, he took off a bit on the rider and I thought, 'this is better'.'' Joe Pride after Estadio Mestalla's Winter Stakes win. 'He still has to make more improvement which I think he will. Angela Jones suspended after Eagle Farm treble which hurts her premiership hopes
Angela Jones ' Eagle Farm treble saw her snatch the lead in the Brisbane jockeys' premiership, but her title hopes were dented by a suspension from the Group 1 Tatt's Tiara. Jones' tremendous trio of winners gave her a one-win lead over good friend and fellow jockey Emily Lang. But there was a sting in the tail late in the day with stewards grilling Jones over her ride on fifth-placed favourite Floozie in the Group 1. Stewards also had winning jockey Tom Sherry in the room, in an inquiry into Jones shifting out on Floozie and Sherry shifting in on winner Tashi, going past the 200m mark. Runner-up Abounding and roughie Bubba's Bay were the meat in the sandwich in the incident. Jones pleaded not guilty, insisting to stewards that the shift from Sherry on Tashi had 'more than half'' the bearing on the interference. 'I don't think it's worthy of a charge,' Jones said. Stewards disagreed, charging Jones with careless riding and suspending her for 10 days to start after next Saturday's Winx Guineas meeting on the Sunshine Coast. The riding ban is the last thing Jones needed on the day she hit the lead in the Brisbane premiership race and she seems almost certain to appeal to the Queensland Racing Appeals Panel. Immediately after imposing Jones' suspension, stewards had Sherry back in the room. They found he was only 20 per cent culpable for the incident and issued the former Irishman with a severe reprimand. It somewhat soured a great day for Jones, who also surged past 100 winners for the Australian racing season.

Irish jockey Tom Sherry scored the biggest win of his career when sending Tashi to victory in the $700,000 Group 1 Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday. Tashi's win also provided her trainer Peter Snowden with his 50th Group 1 victory, 20 of those wins were in partnership with his son Paul. Tashi raced forward of midfield before launching her claim in the early part of the straight and the mare surged clear of the field to score a dominant win over Abounding with Olentia in third. A five-year-old mare by Sebring, Tashi's victory was her fifth from 26 starts, taking her earnings to more than $1 million. This is what the riders thought of their mount's performance in the Tattersall's Tiara. 1st - TASHI (Tom Sherry) The stars aligned today, and I can't thank Peter and his team enough. It's been a long road and it's been a tough year, but moments like this make it all worthwhile. When I came up outside Abounding, I got the jitters and went full bore. She's had an unbelievable prep. She's kept protruding, even though she hasn't won she's been super consistent. I'm so proud of this mare and it feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders. Things like this don't happen to people like me, so I'm delighted. 2nd - ABOUNDING (Rachel King) She's been very brave in defeat. She finally got her chance today from a nice draw, and she showed what she can do. The winner was too good for us today, but she was fabulous. 3rd - OLENTIA (Damien Thornton) She ran really well, we just had to deal with a bit of traffic. 4th - EXOTIQUE MISS (Rachel King) She's run a super race. She's been racing consistently all carnival, she stepped up to Group 1 grade and was outstanding again. 5th - FLOOZIE (Angela Jones) She probably just had to do a little more than we would've liked, and never got cover. She didn't settle as well as she usually does and it probably told late. 6th - INFANCY (Jason Collett) She's run great. The barrier just made it difficult, but I was really happy. 7th - FIRESTORM (James McDonald) She's run well, but it's been hard to make ground on this firm track. 8th - BUBBA'S BAY (Andrew Mallyon) She was really brave, we just got impeded with 150 to go and should have finished much closer. 9th - COCO JAMBOO (Chad Schofield) We got her out the gates but we had to take her back from that gate and she didn't finish off as well as she can 10th - EL MORZILLO (Tommy Berry) We had a lovely run on the back of the eventual winner. We just got dragged down pretty badly coming round the home turn, and I thought she was going to come down. She struggled to recover from that. 11th - SEMANA (Robbie Dolan) That was probably one of her best runs for a long time. I got all the luck from the wide barrier, the splits came and she quickened up well but the track was probably a touch form for her. If she keeps progressing, you should see her back to her best. 12th - COCO SUN (Billy Egan) Once she gets out to a mile and more, you should be in for a good prep. 13th - KONASANA (Regan Bayliss) The drying track just worked against us, she got a lovely run but she prefers softer tracks. 14th - ZASZOU (Ryan Maloney) She didn't want any part of the firm conditions and was unable to let down. 15th - ARCTIC GLAMOUR (Kerrin McEvoy) She had a wide run in transit which told on her in the end. 16th - COEUR VOLANTE (Jordan Childs) She didn't have any luck from the gate which affected her ability to finish off her race. 17th - GRINZINGER BELLE (Tim Clark) She was below her best today so hopefully there are no issues.
