Maternal support grant not implemented 10 years on
JOHANNESBURG - More than a decade after first being proposed, the Maternal Support Grant has still not been approved. Cabinet's Social Protection Committee sent the policy back last year, noting cost and policy concerns. According to the Grow Great Campaign, 25% of all pregnant women go to bed hungry. Civil society says government inaction is hurting mothers and their unborn children. Among the voices raising concern, is the Grow Great Campaign. The campaigns Deputy Executive Director, Nicola Stofberg says the policy process have been painfully slow despite strong evidence and support. Says some of the factors that have played a role in stalling the process is other competing grants being proposed. 'While we understand that other competing grants like the basic income grant, social relief of distress grant are all necessary, what the coalition is saying is let us prioritise vulnerable woman. This will make way of the other grants to come into place in time,' she says

HH Shihab chairs Social Protection committee meeting
MUSCAT: The ministerial committee entrusted with the Social Protection Scheme held a meeting on Monday under the chairmanship of HH Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs and Chairman of the Committee. The committee began its meeting by reviewing the implementation status of the decisions issued in its first meeting this year. It discussed several agenda items and examined proposals submitted by relevant authorities regarding the social protection system, deliberating on all aspects and taking appropriate decisions. It is worth noting that among the main objectives of the Social Protection Committee is evaluating and monitoring the performance of the social protection system to ensure fair, effective and sustainable insurance coverage for all segments of society, in line with the outlined goals of the social protection system. — ONA

By OMAN NEWS AGENCY (ONA) Muscat – The ministerial committee entrusted with the Social Protection Scheme held a meeting under the patronage of H H Sayyid Shihab bin Tarik al Said, Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs and Chairman of the Social Protection Committee, on Monday. The meeting was attended by ministers who are members of the committee. The meeting discussed a number of topics on its agenda and took appropriate decisions. The meeting also touched on the main indicators of the number of beneficiaries of social protection benefits, as well as indicators of insured persons. The meeting discussed annual plans of two related funds – Social Protection Fund and Military and Security Services Retirement Fund. One of the most important objectives of the Social Protection Committee is evaluation of and monitoring the performance of the Social Protection Scheme. The overall aim is to ensure the application of a fair, functional and sustainable insurance coverage for all segments of society and to achieve the objectives set for the Social Protection Scheme.
