Severe hostel crunch affects thousands of students in Dharwad district
Pic: Thousands of students are deprived of a seat at government hostels in Dharwad district. (Pic for representation only) Hubballi: Dharwad, known as 'Vidyakashi' for its academic atmosphere, is facing an acute shortage of govt hostels. While 99 hostels currently exist, they are inadequate for the lakhs of students who flock here from across north Karnataka. Last year alone, over 67,000 students were denied hostel accommodation. The district administration has now proposed 44 new hostels—22 each for boys and girls—to address the gap. Gangadhar Badiger, Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist), stated that the scarcity of hostels is an old issue in the district. "Existing seats are being allotted only on the recommendation of elected representatives," he alleged. Shashikala Meti, Secretary, AIDSO, Dharwad district, observed that girls are major victims of the situation. "Denial of seats for girls is discouraging them from getting a better education. Many of them are travelling from distant towns and villages by changing 2-3 buses. There has been a common opinion that girls can travel by bus utilising the Shakti scheme," she analysed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cách giao dịch ETH/USD mà không cần nắm giữ Ether IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Sources in the district administration said that last year 35,255 students applied for hostel seats. Demonstration held to express solidarity with people of Palestine
Left parties staged a demonstration near the Town Hall here on Tuesday, condemning the attack on Palestine by Israel and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine. Organised as part of the National Harmony Day, members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) and Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) condemned the atrocities by Israel in Gaza and called for immediate halt the war. In the last two years, over 55,000 Palestinians have been killed and lakhs have been injured in the unrelenting offensive by Israel, while basic facilities like hospitals, schools and relief shelters have been destroyed. This is nothing short of genocide, they said in a statement. In the West Bank, Israel is trying to annex Palestinian territory and establish Jewish settlements. Through organised and planned occupation, Israel is attempting to usurp Palestinian land, and is trying to forcefully create 'Greater Israel' by evicting Palestinians from their ancestral land, the statement said. The protesters condemned the Union government for abandoning India's long-standing principled support for Palestine. They said that instead of standing firmly with the people of Palestine, the government is cozying up to Israel. This reversal is shameful and goes against India's anti-imperialist history and values rooted in the country's freedom movement, the protestors said, demanding the government to immediately halt all military and security co-operation with Israel.
